We have #1 seed regardless of what happens today or tomorrow.
I don't think that's the case at all. If Iowa beats us, then Michigan/Ohio State, they'll have made a great case. They're as hot as we are right now. Alabama, if they win their conference tournament, will have made a great case.

This is not a foregone conclusion. It's best we just win and not leave it to debate.

Cool pic of Q. Dosunmu greeting Frank Garza at last night's game.

I'm really not impressed with Iowa's conditioning. I was thinking last night during their game, that they look soft muscle-wise. Not much definition to the middle school muscles they do have.
I am not a S&C coach, but I have trained my whole life and competed at the D1 level. So I believe that qualifies me to say this. They are soft.

I take your point about, e.g., Garza looking soft. I have a different view. I've never been a D-1 athlete, like you and altenberger22, not even close. (Forgive the self-promotion:) I deadlifted 485 lbs yesterday afternoon @ 55 yrs old and I've studied the S&C topic a great deal over the years so have a decently-informed opinion about it. And I played BB competitively through high school so understand the thinking/taboos over the years about weight training and basketball.

The ability to look "ripped" at a given muscle mass depends to a large extent on genetics. Gaining muscle entails gaining fat; losing fat comes with losing muscle. Some guys (like Garza, I suspect) carry more fat per muscle kg than (for example) I did at that age. It's his physiology. I have no doubt Garza and his teammates are in excellent condition, as all of these guys must be in order to play every day. How strong is he relative to our Fletch-trained guys? Can't tell. Might be stronger, depending on the Iowa BB S&C regimen. Watching him go at it with Kofi can give an indication of relative strength.

We can be ripped and much weaker than a guy of the same height having greater muscle mass and fat. I weight 30 pounds more at 55 than I did when I resumed lifting at 49 but you'd barely know it to look at me. I'm just a lot denser (heh!) Strength is the ability to exert a force against an external resistance, nothing more. It's safe to say that every set of BT starters are in relatively comparable "condition" in terms of endurance and VO2 uptake. But at this level, adjusting for the genetics that give a player a 36" vertical jump b/c he's got an innate excess of fast-twitch muscle fibers and six-sigma neuromuscular efficiency, strength is what separates one player from another. It's hard to tell on the surface how it differs until, say, one guy tries to screen or post up another. And even then confounding variables interfere.

My two cents. Sorry if that seems pedantic. Can we all just agree that the Iowa players are aesthetically repellant?

I find the S&C topic really interesting. Can't wait for the tip this afternoon. Haven't been able to look forward to the BT semis in what, 11 yrs?!

ILL-!!

After losing five in a row (what a dark time for me, as someone who grew up in Iowa City with Hawkeyes friends...), we are on a two-game winning streak against Iowa. We are 1-3 all-time vs. Iowa in the BTT, but surprisingly we never faced them from the start of the tournament in 1998 through 2011. So, we compiled that record during some of the darker years in our program's history, 2012 to 2018.

I don't know if it's because all of my best friends are Iowa fans or if it's because of Garza being a touch matchup for a younger Kofi or if it's Iowa's ability to get hot from three, but I have ALWAYS been so nervous for this game ... not today. For the first time in 16 years, you can say you think Illinois is the best team in the country right now and have almost every college basketball fan think that's at least a reasonable take. I have so much confidence in these guys right now, and BOY do they look dialed in! And honestly, that was all that ever seemed to hold this group back. If we play our game, we're going to win today. I expect an intensely close game, but it feels good to go into EVERY single Illini game knowing we can win. My final prediction:

#5 (3) Iowa 77
#3 (2) Illinois 82

Let's keep marching, boys!

FOTN: As someone who grew up in Columbus with friends who are uniformly Buckeye fans, I feel you. I'm pleased that the Illinois-Iowa rivalry on the court is back to its intensity of old. Am hoping football gets there soon. Iowa was always a tough opponent back in the day, and Carver was not a place opponents looked forward to visiting when Iowa was competitive. The high point of last season for me was that game in Champaign in early March.

I'm with you on feeling going in that we can win every game. I think it'll be a close, physical one today.

It is going to be a tough road ahead. Iowa going to be tough and don't discount OSU beating Mich. OSU is a pain in the !!! to play if we beat Iowa.

Looking at the minutes from yesterday, Iowa had 4 players with over 30 minutes and one with 28. We had only Trent and Ayo playing over 30 Garza played 38, Frederick, 32, Weiskamp 35, Bohannon, 30 and Franny Jr with 28. Kofi with 27 was nearest 30 with Miller with 26. Belo played only 15 and he will be ready to go. We are more rested as we played earlier. We need to work them and wear them down.

A rubber match against OSU would be fun if...sorry...when we get past Iowa.

My mantra from here on out is going to be “Just make your free throws”. We have an incredible team, but that is one of our clear weaknesses. Maybe I should say vulnerabilities.

Michigan's Livers is out indefinitely after an MRI with a stress fracture in his right foot! Announced today! Also, Illinois has moved up to #2 in the polls ahead of Baylor #3 as of today!

And Young is out due to concussion protocol. Let’s take care of business today and win a title tomorrow! :shield:

I expect Franny is saying the same thing to the squwakeyes......He will be in defcon # 999999999999999999999999999 and in the refs ears about everything Kofi does is a foul...just looking at garzilla , breathing on garzilla.....
who the refs are will also be a factor regarding the flow of the game ...if memory serves me right, our last game against them was one of the few B1G that had a good flow and exciting plays with the refs hardly being noticed....if my memory is clouded on this , well I hope we can have an enjoyable game and a big win for the Illini......

The Illini are playing so well right now, I feel good about this weekends games. And we have improved so much this season. For older fans like me, I'm starting to realize this could be our best team ever, since we never had a true center on the 89 and 05 teams, and Kofi makes such a huge difference out there. We are pretty deep at the guard position, probably as good as some of our best teams when you look at the quality and depth. I'm optimistic about Indy.
Don’t agree with you on 05 team. Augie was a stud.

I have a ton of respect for both of those men. (And their sons) From this picture and the TV, it sure looks like they could have a lot more butts in the seats and still maintain a safe distance.
