SORT OF off topic, but does anyone have any advice for a first time Grange Grove visitor? Will five friends (three Hawkeyes fans) who know no one there be able to enjoy themselves walking around or should we either rent some stuff or stick to the beer garden?

Appreciated. :)

This season Iowa has gotten up for their big opponents like Michigan and Wisconsin. We are not Michigan or Wisconsin.

It's Senior Day and Lunt is back in the line-up.

Maybe there's a chance...

Illini 17 - Iowa 16.

Almost happened last year when Iowa was undefeated. From espn :

" Canzeri delivered with one of the best days a Hawkeye has ever had, helping his team hold off a furious challenge from Illinois.

Canzeri ran for 256 yards on a school-record 43 carries -- including 11 straight on a crucial fourth-quarter drive -- and No. 22 Iowa beat Illini 29-20 on Saturday for its sixth straight win. "

Wes Gunslinger Lunt had 317 yards passing and the Illini was driving down 6 points with about 3 minutes left in the game but our running back fumbled. They kicked a FG and won by 9.

Probably can't stop the run but gotta contain it and get 400 yyds from Lunt. If he had another 70 yds passing in last game we win.

Thanks!

You can BYOB. There are no chairs that I saw so BYOC.

We just need to not get embarrassed to the point where we start losing recruits. That would be the proverbial "dagger" in the heart of the program.

I am not going to the game, but for those inquiring about Grange Grove... how easy would it be to go buy a $10 lawn chair in a bag you can sling over your shoulder, a 12 pack in your hand, and just walk in to The Grove a couple hours before the game? Totally doable?

I imagine opening up the chair, sitting down, cracking a beer and smirking, knowing I just gamed the system (or maybe not). Toss that chair when I am done and off we go with no clean up.

Sounds like the super lazy, high quality result some people (not saying me, just saying me) would value pulling off.

Very easy. You won't game the system. I believe it's pretty much designed for people to do that. Last game, GG was so crowded that I didn't even have to bring my own beer. You just walk up to other people's tents and they give one.

That's not gaming the system. That's the right way to handle Grange Grove.

It appears that the conditions for Saturday's game are going to make it hard for any team to pass the ball. As if Iowa needed any more help to win this game.

Our run defense has been horrific the past couple of games and it's going to be hard for us to establish a run game without a passing threat. This is where a dual threat QB would be nice.

I remember in the fall of 2011 seeing Russell Wilson hardly throw the ball at all because the conditions were so bad, and he had one of the highest QB ratings in College Football history at the time. Montee Ball is the one that beat us that day.

We've been fortunate to avoid those type of conditions this year, especially against MSU, but Memorial Stadium is usually a wind tunnel at this time of year.

Remember Ohio State throwing the ball like 3 times and beating us? One was a TD. That was some wild wind.

Yes. Braxton Miller was the QB and they had just come off a tough loss at Nebraska. In spite of how few times they threw the ball, Whitney Mercilus still had two sacks!

The problem was we couldn't get anything going on offense either. It was 3-3 at halftime and we know how that game ended.

We were 6-0 and ranked #15 in the country entering that game. That might as well have been one hundred years ago as it's been all downhill since then :(

I looked it up (if anyone cares):

http://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/boxscores/2011-10-15-illinois.html

It was actually 3-0 at halftime and Illinois was #16 in the country (according to this website).

Jonathan Brown and Whitney Mercilus had 1.5 sacks each while Akeem Spence and Michael Buchanan had .5 a sack each.

Braxton Miller was 1-4 with 17 yards passing and the one completion was a TD.

That's 4 sacks for a guy who only had 4 pass attempts. I get that some of those were probably just TFLs of Miller, but still

The week before, OSU blew a 27-6 lead in the 3rd Quarter against Nebraska. Herron doesn't show up in the box score for that game.

Wasn't it Boom Heron's first game back from suspension too?

Yeah I remember that game. 6-0 going into it, Boom Herron's first game back, rushing for over 100 yds. We take a horrible slide to end up 6-6, The Zooker gets fired.

Might be a long shot, but we win that game and don't go on that slide, Zook keeps his job another year or two, and Toledo's coach never comes to Champaign.

Then again, we might still have Mike Thomas in that scenario...

Thanks for the advice on Grange Grove! We are staying at the Hyatt, so we'll probably grab one drink there EARLY, head to the Campustown bars for a drink or two and then stop by Grange Grove around 9:45. We're probably going to bank on just going to the beer garden, but we may stop at a gas station and pick up some beer before. Can't wait!

My son goes to Iowa. He says everyone there is looking ahead to next week's game against Nebraska. He's expecting Iowa to underperform this week.
