We need to win it for the sake of giving the country a more entertaining brand of basketball to watch than what TJ Otzelberger puts out. Don't get me wrong, I have respect for what he's been able to accomplish but it is a very boring brand of basketball(just a step above Virginia)
Like an NBA team coached by Mike Fratello.

I know this is the Iowa St thread but I feel that Brad needs a big hand for pulling the right levers at the right times the past couple of weeks. Spurring us to wins

In the Ohio St, it was putting Dain in for extended minutes. It was also crucial against Morehead state in the 2nd half.

Putting DGL in for defense against morehead st was crucial too.

He’s sprinkled Luke in the right times and matchups to be successful.

Wouldn’t be here without Brads game management! The staff has made good game plans too.

Agree. And add in that those players stepped up to make Brad look good is a big part. it takes both sides to show how valuable one is to the other.

The one thing that I feel could tip the scales in Illinois’ favor against a very good ISU defense is our ability and willingness to make an extra pass. Iowa State will trap and they will trap HARD. When they blew the doors off Houston, ISU trapped and rotated very well. You have to move the ball faster than their rotations.

If Illinois can do that, there will be some open shots. But it’s going to be a real chess match to see if ISU can keep Illinois off balance for where the doubles originate. In-game adjustments will be critical, because I think both teams will scout the other very well.
The refs will matter in this game. To me it looked like ISU's defense seems to rely on overplaying and getting very tight into the offensive player's space on the perimeter. If called properly this is a violation of cylinder rule. I saw it called at least once in the WSU game. Also, if you are able to get past the first level of defense the court opens up.

I think, if there's one way we can describe Underwood, it's "adaptable." It's not always mid-game like maybe the fans hope, but on multiple occasions, he has shown himself to be a continual student of the game, willing to change his approach to achieve more. I think that's a great quality, not just in a coach, but in a person in general. That spirit of continuous improvement and learning is great for the program and for the players and assistants who learn from him.

I am high on our program's future with Underwood at the helm.

This year is easily his best coaching display since he's been here. From roster construction, to establishing culture, to in-season and in-game adjustments, he's just pulling all the right levers like you said. Just a masterful job. Imagine if he was as good as B1G Coach of the Year winners such as Tim Miles, Mark Turgeon, Richard Pitino, or Juwan Howard.

I believe that 1% chance is valid for any number of possible scenarios.

Could be a Disastrapocalypse in Boston.......you never know. 🤷‍♂️
I personally read it to mean that there was a 99% chance that Illini play both Thursday and Saturday (I am reading everything with orange goggles this morning). I am completely fine with that.

TSJ is gonna TSJ and Domask is going to Domask. Coleman might be the x-factor. Really need him to stop chirping and just play basketball. ISU is going to bump, push, and grab a lot. He needs to be mentally ready to not get calls.
Man...enough with the Coleman criticism.

He chirps and complains about calls more than anyone I've seen for us but if that's what it takes for him to get himself into the game, so be it. He's backing it up with his play and leadership.

At this point he's an Illini lifer, helped take us farther than we've been in almost 20 years. We need him to play with an edge, he is who he is and we just gotta live with it and appreciate it.

Watching the tournament this year and it seems the officials are really letting teams play. Not a ton of foul calling, unless there is some Blood flowing. I like it, but will say TSjr. was fouled at minimum 5x last night and it was not called. On top of the fouls he earned.
Iowa St. is suffocating and physical. We had better pack the Gauze and First aid kits.
Gonna be our biggest test of the season Duquesne is not Iowa St..
Go Illini

Amen. The old adage that you need to be careful that in casting out your demons you don’t throw away the best of yourself.

Coleman gonna Coleman. I wouldn't have it any other way.

First guy since Kevin McHale to never commit a foul. Think he does get some bad calls but when he complains every time he is never going to get a break.

We've seen other really good defensive teams but ISU might be the best. However they aren't great on offense and Illinois love to push the pace off of missed baskets. Are they good enough defensively to slow down the fireworks?
They're the best statistically(KP #2 behind Houston) but the Illini have had success scoring on basically everyone.

Tennessee is the #3 and we scored 79 on the road in a game we didn't play well. Rutgers is #4 and the Illini put up 76 and 86. Scored 71(without Shannon) and 80 on #8 MSU, and 67(without Shannon) and 85 on #12 Maryland who was ranked much higher defensively before a slide in March.

Iowa st is 5-6 when they allow a team to score 70+ and two of those wins were DePaul and New Hampshire.

I don't think they have the offense to run away from us so I think the Illini should at least be able to hang around long enough to get hot and go on a run like they tend to do.
