This Iowa state team is legit. I was court side for all games Thursday and Saturday. I will say it’s going to take a complete game to beat them. I will also say their fan base reminds me of the Hawkeye fan base. I was 2 rows behind the WSU bench on Saturday and the F bombs directed at the college athletes by a multitude of ISU fans was ridiculous. I didn’t have a horse in the race so I was just in observation mode and most all of them around me were top level obnoxious. I’m sure comparing the Iowa state fans to the Iowa fans won’t go over well, but if you’ve ever been to an Iowa/Illinois game at Carver you know what I’m talking about. In defense of the ISU fan base this is based on a small sample size of a couple of games.
It is the state of Iowa, nevertheless.

Sounds like Iowa/ISU and Maryland fans deserve each other.

So, just for fun….anyone trading Domask for Dennis still?? I sure wouldn’t.

I’m not worried about the fans- making the players play past midnight is absolutely ridiculous- they never practice then, it’s completely off any normal schedule they are used to and adds an unnecessary variable to the game

The NCAA really needs to set some boundaries for when CBS can schedule these games- the West coast games can be the late ones for TV purposes- this really makes no sense to make the east coast sites play the late games

Looking at rebound statistics gives me some more optimism. As efficient as the Illini offense is, Iowa State's defense does create both turnovers and tougher shot opportunities. The Illini are 4th in the nation in rebounding at 41/game (Iowa State is 249th at 33/game). The Illini are 17th in offensive rebounds at 11.2/game and ISU is 117th in offensive rebounds allowed at 8.4/game (surprisingly the same as Illinois, but ISU is only 117th in offensive rebounding).
In Iowa State's 7 losses:
--Virginia Tech shot 40% but had 8 2nd chance points on 8 offensive rebounds
--Texas A&M shot 40% but had 16 2nd chance points on 15 OR
--Oklahoma only had 5 2nd chance points but shot 10/25 from 3-point range
--BYU had 10 2nd chance points on 12 OR
--Baylor had 16 on 13 OR
--Houston had 8 on 8 OR...but only had 9 turnovers and won despite shooting 42%
--Kansas State had 10 on 11 OR and won despite shooting only 40%
If the Illini can limit turnovers that will take away a key piece of ISU's offense. It also will mean more shots and more offensive rebound opportunities. If guys like Rodgers, Guerrier, Dainja and Hawkins hit the offensive boards like they are capable, it might be more important than ever in this matchup.

Yes. Second chance points will be huge. To me the 3 biggest keys to the game are:
1. Limit live ball turnovers
2. Get stops
3. Offensive rebound

2 lets us get out in transition. 3 lets us get second chance points. Both will help us score without having to solve their half court defense. And metrics say both are possible.

1 will prevent them from getting easy baskets. We’ve actually done pretty well taking care of the ball in half court and we’ve only really turned it over a lot against teams that full court press (Rutgers, Penn St). From what I’ve seen I don’t think ISU presses full court. And last game, although not nearly as good as ISU, Duquesne similarly plays half court defense and has a pretty good turnover percentage, and we turned it over about 40% less than what they typically get.

Anything can happen in one game, but if the game plays out the way the metrics point, I do think the metrics favor us.

I will say this-I know UConn is very good, but whoever wins this regional for the Final Four berth will earn it. This is a heavyweight group, and everyone’s playing really well. This regional is what NCAA tournament basketball is supposed to feel like, and I love it.

If Illinois does get to the Final Four, no one can talk about flukes, low seeded draws, etc. They will have proven it in the court if it happens.
I guess you might say this is 100% true.

This was never the choice, though. It wasn't Dennis or Domask, it was Dennis or "leave the scholarship open". Given that choice, I think I'd still have preferred Dennis.

First time since 2005 I’ve felt this good about the team. No major injuries, team demonstrated they can win after being down double digits, peaking at the right time, and a driven TSJ. Illinois likely outplaying their season statistics on both offense and defense right now. Big 12 accused of padding their stats with weaker teams pre conference and Kansas’s and Houston’s injuries resulting in padded stats late. So I like our chances with Iowa State. Probably will take a miracle shooting night for Illinois to beat a dominant center team like UConn or PU. But those happen in March and we are long overdue.

The most enjoyable line: "You might squeeze out a win, but win or lose I think you'll be impressed with the Dukes. Dukes would punk Penn State or Rutgers the way they're playing right now."
I do recall being impressed with the use of "punk" as a verb

You can really stop at #1- ISU averages 20 pts a game off turnovers - if we limit that, we win. I really think it’s that simple

They don’t dominate the glass, they don’t dominate FT’s attempted and aren’t a good FT shooting team, they don’t block a lot of shots, they just limit teams to poor FG% and create a lot of turnovers to create their offense- <10 turnovers and we win IMO

That is easier said than done given they will be the most high pressure defense we’ve played all year which is why I’m interested to see what our approach will be- I think this could be a Dain game down low and that could open up our shooters

Liking the late start. Use the time wisely, get nutrition right, hydration, rest and they should be more than ready to go full tilt by tip-off. Can't wait.
I like the start time as well. I get to tailgate at noon before Sox Opener, go to that game, and then get home in time for tipoff. Add in celebratory time after the game, I should be able to get to sleep around 2 AM CT. However, for those in Boston, that is a very late evening start (can't recall the last time a game was scheduled to start after 10 PM local time, typically delays lead to the late start).

Are the White Sox still a thing? I didn’t watch a single game last year and I’m going to try and keep that streak going until something changes.

I’ll be more fresh for this tip off

Dain has really improved this year passing out of the post, but he’s still one of our more turnover prone players. Think we go primarily to Domask in booty ball actions in the half court. Morehead made a point to take his post up game away, but he was able to carve up their defense for 10 assists and we went 12-26 from 3.
Marcus will have a size advantage against ISU and should be able to see over the top and find cutters or shooters.

Apologies if this isn’t the best thread for this (previous post games are closed), but any idea how I can watch the full broadcast from either of our first 2 games?

I'm with you in your thinking about the keys to success.
ISU feels like Brad's old teams. Turn over the opponenent and get in their grill. Obviously we all know Brad changed his approach. To me, this game will be old Brad system v new Brad system.

The Illinois-Duquesne game has a full game replay available on HBO Max. The Morehead State game just has a 10-minute highlight video on there.
