The thing I am most worried about is how well Iowa State pressures the ball and creates turnovers. Tamin Lipsey is a straight up problem and he was named a finalist for Naismith Defensive Player of the Year. 2.7 steals per game is ridiculous. Keshon Gilbert isn't too far behind and Sixth Man Curtis Jones is right there as well. If there was one downside to Shannon's game against Duquesne it was that the turned it over more than you'd like. As we all know, Illinois does not have a "true" point guard so this could be an area of concern.

The one thing I am most excited about is rebounding. Iowa State is a below average rebounding team and Illinois is amongst the best in the nation. If shots are going off because they didn't turn Illinois over, then Illinois has a great chance of coming down with the rebound on any misses and getting second chance opportunities. Offensive rebounds are an area where Ty Rodgers could potentially shine.
Hope so. He didn't have any Off. rebounds in the last game and only one rebound overall.

Johnny Orr played at my High School, before my time, but I always loved looking at the pics and trophies in the display case by the gym.... Taylorville Tornadoes!

My grandfather was in his class in high school. I'm not from Taylorville myself, although somewhat nearby. I recall quite a few stories about that 45-0 team.

"Every time Illinois needed a steal and a bucket to stop the clock in those final frantic three minutes, Williams, Head and a big kid off the bench named Jack Ingram seemed to come up with one or both. And the partisan crowd, which has been so despondent, began to roar again, that deep desperate guttural sound of a crowd connected to the team and the moment. To the Wildcats' credit, they cut a six-point overtime deficit to one. And they had the final shot, which Adams missed. And in the bedlam, everybody knew they had seen something not just rare, but admirable, the tournament at its best, March at its absolute Maddest. The band played, the tears flowed. Explanations be damned."

yes some of the takes I read were laughable. someone said they had lived in Chicago for 14 years and the Iowa state fans there were more passionate than the illini fans and that they doubt there will be more illini fans than ISU fans in Boston. obviously that person must not get out much. another said Chicago only cares about pro sports and notre dame. as for the fanbase talk, if I'm not mistaken UIUC has one largest alumni bases in the nation. there is no dearth of illini fans and they travel extremely well
Yeah, I have lived in Chicago for four years and the assertion that there are more Notre Dame football fans than Illini football fans is - in my experience - a total myth. However, there are a ton of Notre Dame football fans. BASKETBALL, on the other hand, is a bewildering take to have ... I would wager that less than 25% of Chicago Area Notre Dame football fans cheer for their basketball team, and that might be generous. The Chicago Sun-Times did a poll last year of its readers' favorite college football team, and Illinois was ahead of Notre Dame (I cannot access the numbers). However, I remember seeing a poll about three years ago by the Tribune that had it at like 32% Illinois, 20% Notre Dame, 10% Northwestern and the rest was other (disproportionately other Big Ten schools, almost certainly).

It's really annoying when people perpetuate the myth that Illinois is not the most popular team here in BOTH sports (and EASILY for basketball), because it's just simply not true, haha.

Or, and hear me out Cyclone fans, fans seek each other out and ISU fans wouldn't run into Illini fans at their local ISU bar. Just a theory.
Lol, this is always one of the funniest self-fulfilling prophecies in Chicago, too. MSU fan goes to MSU bar with MSU grad friends and mysteriously gains the perception that he "sees at least as much MSU gear as Illini gear in Chicago!" :ROFLMAO: I think people also compare Chicago and the Illini to much smaller and less transplant-heavy cities like Detroit (Michigan/MSU), Des Moines (Iowa/ISU), Milwaukee (Wisconsin), Indianapolis (Indiana/Purdue), etc. and expect that kind of partisan loyalty from Chicago toward the Illini and are unimpressed when they don't see it ... but that's just not a reality for a city the size of Chicago. It's all a spectrum. Chicago supports the Illini significantly better than New York City supports any one school for any sport, but it obviously is not going to reach the levels you see in a smaller city like a Cleveland for Ohio State or something like that. Like, duh!

Illinois had multiple games this season, including the Mizzou game, that had an 8:00 PM CT start. When we get to the tournament, the start time becomes really irrelevant. I mean, we have had people on here complain in the past about the players not being ready for a mid-afternoon Saturday start for a B1G game. The players will be fine.
Might have been addressed later in the thread, but it isn't the players so much. It's fans in LA getting a 4:00 start time and east time zone fans getting a 10:00 start time. Ridiculous! Now, I'm retired and a late night person anyway, but lots of folks aren't.

Orr was coaching Michigan when I was in HS. Taylorville had the first ever undefeated Prep team in Illinois I believe..... Great history!

Check your seasons. You’re looking at 20-21 season. Steve Prohm’s final season 2-22 record. The next season was TJ’s first season and we beat Tech 51-47 in Ames then lost there.
that 4 point win was the only matchup in which TSJ did not play. unless i missed something, it appears that TSJ has never lost to ISU in games in which he played (6). let's hope this trend continues.

He was also a three-sport athlete for Illinois:

TSJs sophomore season was 20-21.

The season you are talking about, he didn't play in the game you guys beat them (51-47 at Ames), box score below The game you are trying to reference, TT had three guys in double figures and TSJ was just getting back into it after being out of the mix for three games and they won easily by 12.

What you did fail to mention was the 3rd game you faced them in the Big 12 Tournament where TT beat you by 31, and TSJ was the high scorer on the floor with 15.

Whichever season it was, TSJ’s development here has been nothing short of remarkable. He is not the same player now as he was then, or even compared to last year for that matter. I don’t know who is going to win this upcoming game but if ISU holds TSJ to under 20 that would be considered “contained.”

At any rate I think this is the point in the tournament when things get really interesting. We’ve pretty much beaten everyone we should have this year, but have struggled in ultra top tier games. Really looking forward to the team testing its limits again.

We haven’t played a team quite like Iowa State yet.. but we have played 11 games against Kenpom top 21 defenses… Marquette, Tennessee, Purdue 2x, MSU 2x, Rutgers 2x, Maryland 2x & KU in the charity game….

In those 11 games we have scored an average of 69.8 points…..

Get. To. 70.
The difference is in the last 6 games TSJ is imposing his will and dominating the game like he hasn’t before- if he does that again, we win, if he doesn’t, it will be a struggle

They don’t have anyone that can guard him 1-1 but they play really good team defense, TSJ will have to be smart on where he attacks

Yeah, this region is by far the toughest. Whoever comes out of it will be the most battle tested in this dance. Just wish it was Thursday night already!

And in my experience, the Iowa prominence instate indeed really bothers ISU. They feel they should be on equal footing with Iowa as far as fan support goes (at LEAST in Des Moines and west of there!), but they definitely are not. I guess given those circumstances, I was expecting a passionate-but-down-to-Earth fan base on their boards. Instead, you got attitudes you'd expect from Michigan football fans, lol. I still respect the program and the fans overall ... my actual interactions with Iowa State
I have two children, one went to Iowa State and one went (goes) to Iowa. No judgement please, I largely let them make their own choices and there were financial considerations as well.

So I have lived the Iowa / ISU fan experience for the past seven years. I was very surprised when I learned that a heat map of Iowa citizen's fan support was something like 75% Iowa, 20% ISU, and 5% UNI. The only area I found ISU with a superiority complex was in STEM. Everywhere else they are Iowa's little brother, even when geographically very close to Ames.

This! No lies though, I grew up a Hawk fan. I was a freshman at Iowa State when BJ Armstrong, Roy Marble, Ed Horton, Kevin Gamble were playing. I rooted for that team, but then fell in love with Hilton Coliseum. Some of the Big 8 matchups with Kansas and Oklahoma State, Missouri were just awesome. The Johnny Orr days were really fun as a Cyclone! Can't stand the Hawks at all these days...
Too soon

I hope the guys have a chip on their shoulder for the talk of what a “joke” their defense is. I think a lot of us agree that when we have a poor showing on that end effort plays a major roll. I think they will lock in on that end this game with a whole week of hearing only about the rightfully great ISU defense compared to what we put out there. I’m hopeful we will see more of the early season defense in this one. It has been trending in the right direction.

That “year we don’t speak of” comment was meant to be a joke. It was so bad.

I appreciate you coming on this board in a respectful way and providing perspective as an informed Iowa State fan. Thank you.
You guys have a terrific team this year and I wish you the best of luck in upcoming seasons.
Yet, I’m hoping your season ends Thursday. (Just as you are hoping ours is the one to end)
Either way, props to you for contributing to the dialogue with your perspective.
Best to you and yours 😃

Who should we be paying attention to defensively for ISU?

This. I want "Why not us?" to be the mantra this week. "ISU over Illinois? Why not us? UConn is a walking buzz saw? Forget it. Why not us?"
