How often do appeals to NCAA by players who are suspended result in a shortened penalty? Also wondering how many times have suspended players (not ruled entirely ineligible but suspended for a finite number of games) taken NCAA to court to have suspension overturned or reduced? Anyone know?

Jackson State was picked 3rd in preseason media poll. Jayveous McKinnis, their 6-7, 225 pound center, was voted first team all-conference team and pre-season defensive player of the year. Last year he averaged 12.5 ppg, 13.2 rpg, 2.1 bpg and 1.1 spg. He’s their top returning scorer, with Tristan Jarrett (21.1 ppg) having graduated. He was drafted by the Raptors G-League team.

McKinnis seems to clearly be their best player. He entered the transfer portal after last season, but ultimately decided to return to Jackson State after receiving offers from a number of schools, including Southern Miss, Tulane and South Florida. They also picked up 6'2" guard Gabe Watson from Tulane (7.9 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 26.0 minutes) in the portal; Watson previously had transferred to Tulane from Southern Miss, where he averaged 13 ppg and 3.4 assists in 35.6 minutes as a sophomore.

Other returning starters/key rotation players include G Jonas James III (9.9 points and 3.1 assists in 30.4 minutes per game) and F Isaiah Williams (5.8 points and 5.5 rebounds in 23.6 minutes per game). Not clear to me at this point who else will be in their rotation.

None of these four appear to be deadly 3FG threats. James shot a decent percentage (35.5), but was not a volume shooter (11 made 3FGs over 18 games); Watson had 83 3FG attempts for Tulane last year, but converted only 26.5%.

This will be JSU’s first game against ranked opponent since December 2019, when they lost to Baylor and Memphis (by 26 and 28 points).

Jackson St. is scheduled to play Indiana, Marquette, Illinois St. and Iowa St. later this season, so this game tape will likely get some use by those teams.

I am also surprised he didn't see more time in the last exhibition game, considering Kofi may be out the next few games. You would think you'd want to get him as much time as possible to get him ready to play real minutes.

He averaged like 15 mins a game at Florida. IMO, there is no reason to think he minutes won't go down from there considering he is playing behind the best big man in the country. At Florida, he was playing behind....Castleton?

I am happy Payne is here and think he will be a solid 5 when Kofi is gone, but Underwood suggesting Payne is going to play next to Kofi and talking him up, is Underwood doing Underwood thing...at an elite level.
Payne doesn't really need to score with our guards, just catch a lob or two and dunk it. Outside of that I think he's going to be a good rim protector and could be a totally fine starter for us next year like our 4 spot this year. Just can't expect him to be more than say 8 pt 8 reb guy.

I’m not a lawyer, but if the NCAA actually tries to have Kofi’s suspension, based on events in the summer, NOT start for our first two cupcake games … is there seriously no avenue for us to go full UNC/KU and just tie the NCAA up in so much red tape and call their bluff…? At this rate, they’ll purposely suspend him for like our toughest stretch of B1G games, lol. Couldn’t make this up. WE PLAY TOMORROW.

How many times in practice this week does Chester tell the guards "I had 14 points, 7 rebounds, 9 assists when I played Jackson State".

Jackson State cancelled an exhibition match this week. If they cannot play us because of COVID, would their forfeit count as one of Kofi’s three game suspension?

My guess is the staff/admins would do whatever it takes to schedule another low-quality D1 team to fill the gap (while providing them good compensation for accommodating Illinois' schedule)

Why not schedule another TWO games with low quality D1 teams? That way Kofi can play against Marquette(?)
Are we already at max number of allowed non-con games?

This will check our biggest gap in depth with Kofi out. The second gap is where do we go after Belo and Trent at the point. BU said the were working with Hutch there and it seems like Podz is also a possibility. It seemed exposed with Trent hurt and the gap is huge beyond those two. Despite our depth we are one injury away from being a much different team.
