Illini really need this win especially at home don't want to start 0-2 in conference play. I think Maryland is the better team but Illini should have opportunity to beat them at home if they play well. Have to cut down their turnovers and limit their fouls if they want to win two things they were not able to do against Wake and Northwestern

TJL took a big step in NW game as far as aggressiveness and outplayed McIntosh ...Alstork took another leap as far as his overall game....Smith regressed and found less tick....Finke was a non factor....

cowan and huerter accounted for over half their points against purdue. Limit them and we will win. two teams on 2L streak. I expect to break our streak with a W.
Nothing like IlliniLuck to serve us up three consecutive desperate, angry, hungry teams coming off a close loss.

And then what if the defense comes out of the TO playing some type of zone? How do you think our young team would handle that? Probably the same level of execution as if no TO was taken at all.
AJ on Huerter and TJL/DMW on Cowan. We do need to run them hard and wear their starting five down. we are not great...but we are deep and can run successfully if we choose to.

I think this was a misstep too but let's not act like its a calling card of BU's. If and likely when we lose this game and many others this season, it won't be from being poorly coached.
Maryland by 18 in this one.

I’m sure BU wishes he had more size and skill in the front court to attack the zone in the half court. Traditionally zones were used to mitigate a team’s size advantage; pack in and make them beat you from deep. Ironically we are seeing zones without the front court being our strength. I believe teams are zoning us to mitigate our back court depth, quickness, and athleticism, while taking advantage of our lack of 3 point efficiency. LB is basically our most skilled post player, his footwork, post moves, and short jumpers are top notch; unfortunately he has no 6’10 partner to draw attention and clean the boards. Sure, Funke is that size, but is more of a Euro guy who is more skilled on the perimeter than Block.
You have to either shoot over the zone (we haven’t been great there), cut through the zone, attack and kick to shooters, or attack the grey areas of the zone. I believe BU will continue to implement his offensive strategies to beat the zone, but it’s clear his short time on the job is being exploited.
Personally, I would love to see this team utilize its backcourt strengths by pressing full or 3/4 court, speed the B10 teams up who have more size, less athleticism.

Despite any team shortcomings I feel our team has at least personnel potential of BUs SFA teams that won tourney games. there is a learning curve here, and I'm frustrated like others that we are not consistently handling the zone. I feel like we are re- living 15-16 when I see a 5+ minute scoring drought.
Our strength is our bench and conditioning. Whatever we do, I think we should play to that strength.

Problem is teams play many different types of defenses compared to back then. It was not nearly as common to see teams switch from man to zone to press and all combinations in between. It used to be you ran your system and that was it. Now its all about changing to fit matchups and tendencies.

I reference MSU a lot due to being close to the program. Izzy will predominantly take a TO in late half/game situations. No idea if he believes he’s smarter than the next guy, but clearly it’s worked well for him.
