I see that a certain group of people is still talking down to anyone who doesn't have some kind of blind positivity that we're gonna beat every team on our schedule and win the title.

You clowns probably thought we'd beat Uconn, too, didn't you?

We'll be lucky to keep it within 20. That's all I have to say.
To all the blowhards who think we stand a ghost of a chance, and resort to mocking anyone who doesn't trust this team to win, I must ask: What are you seeing that we aren't?

Goodness gracious man, get a grip.

Reminder to the Krush or anyone with connections to Krush: Do the countdown from ten every time Morez goes to the free throw line. Maybe even mix it up after the first couple of trips, like skipping 6 one time, then 5 the next time… then numbers 3 through 7 later on. Get into his head.
Or, better yet … don’t foul the guy.

Man this is a game i wish we had a guy like Nick Anderson, the the Snake Norman or Eddie Johnson to give Yaxel Hell! If Mirk was a bit more athletic or Andre a bit stronger like those 3 then i would feel different.

Mirk needs to go off on the boards and with his shooting.

Brother, we went into Ann Arbor last year unranked and smoked a top-15 Michigan squad by 20.

This is basketball. Sometimes the lesser team wins. As we just saw Saturday night.

Here’s what I freaking want: I want Brad Underwood to look at Kylan Boswell and say the following: “Kylan, you are guarding Cadeau for the next two hours. I want his life to be highly uncomfortable. I want him to regret getting off the damn bus! You are an elite defensive guard. PLAY like it!”

Illini: start another long winning streak beginning with Michigan. And Coach, keep after them about defense. Thanks.

Precisely, the team gets rattled once down. I think this stems from a lack of confidence on the defensive side of the ball that we can string some stops together when the other team is feeling itself. This especially applies against top 15 teams. But it seems even a bubble team like UCLA not known for its offense can also go on on a 10-min 33pt run.

Strong disagree we've gone down vs top 15 teams a few times this year and clawed back every time

NEbraska first game...we lost by 3 yes but we were down as many as 14...came back to tie and lost on buzzer
Purdue, down 11 first half and came back and won in reg
NEbraska game 2 on road, got down7 multiple times, won
Alabama had us down as much as 9 and we got it within 2 in the last minute
Wisky got up on us 8 and we came back and took a lead

I've actually felt the opposite of you...they go down and they always make some sort of comeback where they legit have a shot to win (except uconn, and we even had a +15 pt run late in that game to get it close, but not close enough for me to think we'd win)

If we were a team that was rattled when down, i would think our losses would be bigger margins bc teams would pull away when they got up on us? 5 out of our 6 losses are by 4 or less points

3 of our 6 losses are OT

Wouldnt we see teams pulling away from us if we got rattled when down ?

Heck even the uconn game, the one game we got our asses kicked, we got down 22 and cut it to 7

If we can get in his head, hack a shak might be a great way to get stops. And it might really get in his head if he realized that's what we're doing. 😄

I get that Michigan is good. I get that the loss at UCLA was very deflating. What I don't get are the takes that assure we will lose on Friday. As others have pointed out, three of our six losses were in OT (although the last one never should have come to that), one was on a last second shot, and another was because we missed free throws down the stretch. The only game that we did not really have a strong chance to win was UCONN, and we are not the same team we were then.

I was extremely deflated after the UCLA loss, but it's the only one of our six losses that is just a ridiculous outlier in how it went down. LOTS of great teams have an absolute clunker. Missing Bam for both Wisky and MSU was probably the reason we have those two losses. Nebby going off from three, combined with our lack of defensive effort, which has greatly improved, is what caused that loss.

We can compete with anyone, and saying we will definitely lose to UM is just ridiculous. It's not like we are a John Groce era team going up against the Fab Five.

That 06 Michigan State game was the end of our peak run. We won that game to get to 15-0. Then the very next game lost at Iowa and sputtered the rest of the season with the big blow being the McBride faux buzzer beater vs Penn State.

To go a step further I think this Michigan team, while ranked #3, is better than just about every other team that has came in to SFC that I can remember. I’d put the Oden/Conley team above them but not many others. If you go by Kenpom they are the best of the KenPom Era but there might be some wonky inflation going on since Kenpom has this current Illinois team as better than the 04-05 team.

It’s def not hyperbole to say this is the biggest home game in 20 years given the quality of both teams and the Morez situation adding more juice

The Z rejection in the first 10 minutes is going to fire up everyone in Orange. No doubt he’s going to be absolutely amped to make it happen.
My fear (after all this talk about it) is he’ll be over-hyped to make it happen and jump ant the first opportunity. All it takes is a ball fake to draw the foul.

Good points, just a couple of things to add:
1. Even in the UCLA game we fought back. Those games with big early leads can be weird. How often in those games do you see the team that gave up the lead fall apart once they’re behind and lose by 8-10. We got down but fought back to force OT.
2. The UConn game also had that goofy 4 point play that should have been a shot clock violation (a ton of the CBB commentariat specifically called out what an egregious call that was) that basically sealed the game. If that is called correctly we were very close to putting some game pressure on UConn and then who knows.
3. I think we are one of the only teams in the country who could have won at Mackey with Purdue playing the way they did. Smith hit incredibly tough shots all night including fall away middies over 6’7 Andrej and both of his 3s were contested off the dribble, plus TKR got every friendly roll imaginable. To hang in and win that game shows incredible toughness to me.

We’ve just got a little unlucky in a few close games. As others have said, 4 plays from being undefeated in conference. Even when we face quick shifty guards which are our kryptonite, several things have to go wrong and we have to get a little unlucky to barely lose. Those sorts of things tend to even out over the season. Here’s hoping we saved all of our luck for March!
