Can’t believe we lost to a nothing Minnesota team. No excuses. Bounce back. Beat Michigan State.
We may have caught them at a bad time. They had won 3 straight. There’s a good chance now they may lose their remaining games. They have PSU next, and than Wisconsin after.

Minnesota's season outlook after today.

Tough loss last week for us, but I still think we recover and finish with at least 8 wins.

Most important game of the season for the team. Will this team win a game that shows it's on the path to sustainability, or will it be "same old Illinois?"
I fear the SOI
😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨 unless Luke can have a great, not good game.

Luke has to have a 3 TD ball game and no fumbles or interceptions and we gotta get a couple of field goals to have a chance to win a close game. D is gonna give up at least 25. State qb is slippery and could cause a lot of problems if they don't put a spy on him which they don't seem to be able to figure out.

Sparty a better team on a neutral field? Advanced stats disagree.

Or are we dealing with more injuries than we realize?
Yeah, I think the line will move progressively toward Illinois -6.5. Not like Sparty looked good recently as well. Puzzling opening line to me.

I think Luke will be fine......IF our oline can keep him from getting hit too much.

The IF can be game planned around. I don't know why we don't do more boots early in the game to get Luke on the edge with 2 easy reads (1 flat, 1 deep) and an option to run to pick up 2-5 yards. Use play action passes to open up the running game so the LBs are slow to step up and fill. Do more RPO with mesh concepts to get a quick opening pass route.

BLJ/BB need to install a game plan where we aren't wasting 1st down like we have been.

Unfortunately, Rutgers will be very hard to beat at their place. Ask Minny about that. Seems like M. State has our number as bad as they are. We've got a propensity of losing games we should not lose. If we win this week, I have a good feeling going forward.

We're the only team in college football that has 2 downs to make 10 yards. I agree we need more play action, and shorter routes to keep Luke clean. Oregon has the shortest pass catching routes in the nation, and they're pretty good.

Yep - first down offense has not been good for a long while. IMO we are too run heavy on first down. I just dug up some split stats & we are 65% first down run so far this year. IMO that is just way too high. Sets up too many 2nd & 9, 2nd & 8 type scenarios. It doesn't have to be 50/50, but first down play calling speaks to the relative aggressiveness of the offense (in general). Obviously, score, field position & other factors come in but 65% run on first down is real conservative. And we don't have a super running game. It's decent but not great. Would like to see more of a 55/45 type of split. 1st down passes keep D on their heals & if you are consistently getting 6,7,8 yards on first the 2nd down becomes an open playbook.

At best* ... most times it's no gain or a loss.

Reverse Canadian (CFL) pipeline?

JMO
- Don't run Luke until 4th quarter.
- Keep bigger backs (McCray) in game for pass protection
- Roll Luke out if the pass rush is getting to him
- Throw short passes on first down to keep defense guessing
- Luke has to throw ball away or run and slide if there is nothing there. He is holding ball way to long. Watch John Paddock film with stop watch and put same watch on Luke in practice this week.
