Senior night starting lineup of Tate, Abrams, Hill, Mav, Thorne? Here's hoping there's a quick foul to sub a couple guys out...

That's a horrible starting lineup, but possible I suppose.
If they start that way, Hill should just waste a foul on the tip, lol.

On the one hand, Tate has given great effort and citizenship, despite the bad results and constant criticism. For that reason he should hit the floor for his last game in Champaign. On the other hand, the results have been so consistently bad, and this is such an important game for Groce and the program, I think his minutes will be very limited. Unfortunately, you can't have both, particularly when TJL has shown just how important good play from the point guard position is for this team.

100% agree, but I think Tate starts and Thorne sees minutes. I want none of that to happen..

No way. That would be grounds for an immediate firing (I exaggerate). But the point is, that there is no way Groce risks losing this game to give his seniors a moment. Once the game is decided, they may see a token possession. But they will not play meaningful minutes in the absence of injury/foul trouble.

You should always do anything you can to find seniors even 30 seconds of court time on senior night. Always. Especially considering we have a guy like Tate, much maligned (undeservedly so, it's way over the top the extent to which he is hated on), who was a member of Groce's first class and has worked hard and represented our university well.

If that is the starting lineup JG should be fired at half time. This too important of a game to start getting touchy/feely. Izzo has Michigan State playing well and the outcome could come down to a small margin like a missed free throw or letting Michigan State break out to an early lead. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for honoring the seniors and getting them in if/when possible but this is no time for JG to take his foot off the gas.

Sure, do it at the end of the game when the outcome is no longer in doubt.

I'm not sure what to think of this debate.

A Senior who doesn't start Senior night will be one disappointed senior. Especially one who was recruited to Illinois. Maybe Thorne has no expectations.

Is Tate, Abrams, Hill, Mav, and JCL a viable lineup for a couple of possessions at the start of the game?

It is a slap in the fact to Lucas, Nichols, JCL, Hill, and everyone else on the team if you start Tate. They have clawed their way back to the point where this game matters. You do not play seniors just to play seniors until the end of the game when the outcome has been decided. It's just not fair to the other guys on the team.

Let the seniors finish the game. Just not start them all.

Only if the outcome is 100% guaranteed. As much as I appreciate the commitment and effort from every one of those guys we don't need to risk the postseason on getting Thorne on the floor.

What you hope for is a dead ball with less than a minute to go before a media timeout and then hope like heck that play stops soon after the timeout window.

Highly doubt any player on the team will be offended by seniors playing on senior night.

Not a ton of precedent here.

Starting lineups on senior night (vs different starters the game before):

2013: Griffey, McLaurin, Paul, Bertrand, Richardson (Egwu and Abrams)
2014: Egwu, Hill, Abrams, Rice, Nunn (None) - Ekey left on bench
2015: Egwu, Starks, Hill, Nunn, Rice (None) - No Other Seniors
2016: Finke, Nunn, JCL, Lewis, Hill (None) - No Other Seniors

Bubble year of 2014 saw Ekey on bench. 2013 had Bertrand and Griffey starting in place of Egwu and Abrams. If I had to guess, Tate gets the start with Thorne getting minimal minutes. Groce is loyal dude, maybe to a fault.

This will be painful to watch. The benching of Tate and Thorne is the only reason the season still has a pulse.

if the Illini are 20-8 or 14-14 you start the seniors, the value of one mistake is virtually zero in those instances. Unfortunately, the Illini are in the just out area which means there is no margin for error. Additionally because MSU is on the bubble every game matters for them too, in a normal year a 7 point lead on MSU with 20 seconds left would mean they pack it in and hope the loss doesn't drop them to a 4 seed but they have to play it out now. Hope MT and JT see time but I am sure they would give up playing on senior night if it meant making the NCAAT

If we could get MSU to start their seniors as well, I'd be for it. Eron Harris suited up for Wiscy, knee brace and all. Let him start.
