Last thing I'll say and then I'll let it go...for now.

I don't share these stats to be a doomsayer. I pull data when I want to test or validate what I see/feel/think about the team. That way, when I share opinions here and elsewhere, they're at least somewhat informed and hopefully you guys find it interesting too. Just want to be clear that I'm not trying to slice the data to make us look bad. I thought to myself that we've looked abnormally bad on defense the last couple months so I did some research to see if that really is the case.

Using Torvik, and looking only at data from January and February to make it more apples to apples for you, the last two months have been the third worst Jan-Feb stretch of defense since at least 2008.

AdjD rankings from Jan 1 - Feb 29
2018: 176
2016: 110
2024: 109

You don't have to believe the numbers. Really, these numbers don't even matter. What matters is what we do from here onward. But if you're like me and you've found yourself thinking that you can't remember being this bad defensively in conference play, well it's because you blocked 2018 out of your memory but after that, you'd basically be right.

Edit: @fuggles This better?
Any chance you can do that with December included (December - February)?

I feel like December was okay, but buoyed by some performances against bad teams/offenses.

Edit to add: Love the stats by the way, thank you.

I loved that the others on the broadcast team called him "Mr." He also had the most accurate weather prediction ever. I swear, one February or March, he predicted (with a smile, iirc) "a gradual warming trend over the next few months." Gold!
As long as you believed in the Wooly Worms being more accurate than the National Weather Service.

This is a game where if the D is going to finally show any improvement this year, it’ll have to show it tomorrow. At home vs a mediocre Minnesota offense. If they can’t hold this team to under 80 pts then they never will

Drop coverage + hard close outs + poor communication = our defense

Why don’t we hedge any screens? Guards turn the corner and get a lay up 10 times a game.

Brad wants to talk about how bad we’ve been on defense but continues to do the same schematic things every game …… I know the purpose is to force tough 2’s but it’s not working. How many times we have to watch other teams guards come off a screen with no one within 10 feet of them & the rim? It makes no sense…

it was at indiana that Downey scored his 53pts. (still the Illini all time record (1963). We lost the game 104-101 (I think.) Thanks to huge games from Rayl and Bollyard and the Van Arsdales. Back then, we got to watch Illini home games on WCIA. The picture was somewhat snowy but that didn't slow me down from watching. Play by play guy was Tom Schoendienst and sponsor was Chesty potato chips ("the food it's fun to eat!")
I put "back then" in the wrong place. That was 1953. Downey's big game came 10 years later.

I graduated in '85 after a 7 year stint in the AF (I went back on active duty after graduation). I can remember being able to see the beloved only once or sometimes twice a year. That continued from my time at Wright-Patterson, to Anchorage, Alaska when in 2007, the Big Ten Network offered me almost every Illini football and basketball game every year. Imagine the joy it brought my heart to be able to watch the Beloved, even in the many, many, many, many, many - OK, enough many's. I will NEVER take for granted being able to watch Illini Football and Basketball, regardless of the outcome.

Sure. That also made me curious what our ranking has been each month.

November: 11
December: 67
January: 82
February: 161

Here is where we rank compared to all Illinois teams since 2008, December through February.

2016: 130
2018: 108
2024: 92

It has been 8 games since an Illini game went under 156 points and Minnesota hasn't shown itself to be a defensive powerhouse this year thus far. Seems like a slam the over sorta game.
Yeah, I'm expecting 85 points or so. Asking our defense to give up about 70 seems about right.

Has anyone compared the drop-off in our defense with the number of minutes played by our core guys (1-6/7)? Seems like that was around the time Brad really started cutting down on the rotation. We’ve all noticed the dead legs and effort drop-off near the end of games too. Can it be as simple as fresher legs = better defense?

It's fallacy. Our minute distributions are right in line with what you see in other top teams.
