I've been to the game a few times. First one was in Self's first year. The night Brian Cook went nuts in the first half for like 26 points. We won in OT IIRC. Both teams were in the top 25 at the time. Back in the day when Union Station still had an atmosphere & some good places to eat.

The atmosphere was electric that night. Such a cool event. It has ebbed & flowed over the years with the yoyo status of both programs. But when it's on, there may well not be a better non conference event in all of college hoops.

Phil Bradley who grew up in Macomb, IL, parents were good friends of me and my wife. Phil's best friend and classmate growing up was the son of our best friends. He was a great high school QB and baseball player who played over 8 years in the major leagues. He gave tickets to my friends and my wife and I to go to Columbia, MO to watch him play. Phil had season basketball tickets to Missouri BB games for years and often gave my friend and I tickets to the Missouri v Illinois game. That included the 1990-91 game at the old Arena where Andy Kaufmann hit the winning basket at the end of the game. We were seated right in the middle of the Missouri fans that made it even more interesting. In the first half my friend, who was very short, tapped the shoulder of the man seated in front of him and asked if he would stay seated and not stand all the time. The man turned around and yelled and screamed at my friend. At half time the man came back from having gone out and had popcorn and soft drinks in his hands and apologized to us for being such an !!!. Said his wife told him off and told him to apologize to us. Turned out he was Doctor who lived in Columbia.

This is the commentary you find regarding this game on the Mizzou message board on the St. Louis Post-Dispatch website...

This is actually awesome. Painting the Illini as a 1980s USSR type movie villain team is actually pretty creative.

Underwood 100% fits the Russia bad guy coach roll (i mean... he's embracing it).

Do any of you remember when the Braggin Rights game was the second big hoops event in December in St. Louis? The Coca Cola shootout brought top high school teams and stars from around the country for a day of games. I saw a lot of big names in those Shootouts.

Yes I remember and attended those games regularly even back when it was the 7-Up Shootout. Seen some absolutely awesome talent.

I had forgotten that it started as Seven-Up. The main guy associated with the shootout was a Seven Up Exec I think. Some names I remember Alonzo Mourning, future NFL QB McNabb Vince Carter, Penny Hardaway, Chris Bosh, Marbury, and the best HS duo I ever saw - Kevin Garnet and Ronnie Fields.

Also, in case anyone needs a reminder of this great rivalry's long and often streaky history ... here is your trip down memory lane on the eve of the 44th Braggin' Rights Game played in St. Louis. In the spirit of the event, I will both not include the pre-St. Louis games and omit the 2020-21 game played in Columbia. Also, I put a few fun section breaks in there for Illini head coach changes and when the event switched arenas.

Any super fans been to them all?? A couple fun series notes.

1. It really has been a great rivalry, more often than not. 4 games have gone to overtime (including the 3OT thriller in 1993-94), and 16 games have either been decided by 5 points or fewer, or gone to at least one OT.

2. The "records go out the window" thing is absolutely true. Not even counting all of the times where a heavily favored team has struggled to grind out a win, the lower-ranked team has won 13 different times over the years, and an unranked team has beaten the ranked team 8 separate times.

3. While it hasn't happened in several years now, this rivalry game has been a top 25 matchup between two ranked teams a total of 9 times - 1988-89, 1989-90, 1995-96, 2001-02, 2002-03, 2003-04, 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13.

4. And lastly, and to pump up our Illini pride, here is a comparison of the two programs all-time.

Final Fours: ILL 5, MIZ 0
Elite Eights: ILL 10, MIZ 3
Sweet Sixteens: ILL 14, MIZ 7
NCAAT Appearances: ILL 35, MIZ 29
NCAAT Wins: ILL 46, MIZ 23
NCAAT #1 Seeds: ILL 4, MIZ 1
NCAAT Top 4 Seeds: ILL 16, MIZ 8
AP Top 25 Finishes: ILL 30, MIZ 15
Weeks in AP Top 25: ILL 526, MIZ 311
All-Time Winning Percentage: ILL .642, MIZ .581

And yet your average Mizzou fan has this inexplicable and totally unjustifiable cockiness that they like deserve to be good. :ROFLMAO: Let's go get a win at what is easily one of my favorite sporting events of the year. I-L-L!
What’s crazy to me is that Malcolm Hill beat Mizzou four times yet never played in an NCAA Tournament game.
