Interesting tidbit out of that, Tupper made it sound like Josh Whitman had a part in helping Smith get his waiver to play this year. I hadn't heard that before

Missouri needed the permission of Whitman (and IIRC Underwood) for the NCAA to grant the waiver. Yes, this was known.

MSmith a better fit for Mizzou, play zone defense and stand around the arc for a 3 pointer. BU wants pressure defense and constant motion and cutting on offense.

Xavier looked bad tonight, I don't see MU guards matching up against UI.

I don't think Mizzou plays any zone defense at all. Cuonzo plays almost exclusively man to man.

Smith is not a role player. He's around 20% usage, gets rebounds, and has been very efficient because of his 3 pt shooting.

This won't happen but i'd love to see Underwood play straight man 2 man on these guys. Certainly have an advantage with quickness at the guard position which i think would make things difficult for MO guards. Illinois matches up well with MO why give up any easy looks.

Hi Calvin,

To clarify, a 16-20% usage rate is considered to be a role player. MS is "un-role player" like in shooting about 22% of the time he is used. His rebounding on defense is really good! Extremely low assist and turnover numbers are indicative of MS not being a facilitator or creator. Can't stress enough that through 10 games less than 50 field goals and free throws combined shows looking for deep shots only (he has over 50 3PT FGA).

I speak to the board as a whole when I say I wish everyone would stop talking about MS so much. He is a young man who I hope is happy and finds success at Missouri. It didn't work out at Illinois, but Coach will build his program the right way and make everyone who wants to join and stay better. Yes the MS story line makes this year's game interesting, but regardless of what happens on Saturday, I hope those who criticize him can save their words for themselves.

Yeah, I hate rooting against a kid just because he decided to go elsewhere. Especially because it appears that he truly wasn't a fit here. Now I believe it's been rumored on here that his parents have been bad-mouthing Illinois to other recruits. Now if that is true, I will totally boo his parents if I ever see them.

I, however, won't root for Mark Smith as a person or player to fail. I will 100% root for Missouri to never have any success ever again though.

+1
From some it sounds like you are more concerned with the one that got away than the players on our current roster. I would rather Mark go off for 25, grab 8 rebounds, with 4 assists and Illini win by 15 pts than to shut him down completely and lose to a Mizzou team we should beat. For adults to show this much angst towards a 19 year old kid is quite concerning to say the least. I hope he plays well on Saturday, but we play better. The adults that “boo” young athletes need a reality check in my opinion.

It would be nice to basically ignore MS and JT rather than having our fans boo them - ie show we don't care. But then, that would be me suggesting how fans should be fans so I guess I'll shut-it.

I’ll boo them and hope they do poorly simply because they play for Miznoz. That’s the only reason I need for anyone who wants to represent that stankpile. :thumb:

“But the fair and equal treatment of Mark as a player and a young man is huge for our family. We feel coach Zo and his coaches will bring out the best in Mark.”
-Anthony Smith

I hope we win by 50 - I don't care what MS does on the court. But the slights against BU earlier this year after praising MS in public every chance he got, and apparently being "too tough" on him at practice was out of line. I'll be booing loudly when he's announced. Hope his dad can hear me.

Smith has 55lbs on Frazier and we all know who the tougher guy is. Can't wait to see it.

Everytime I'm reminded of this, I have to internalize an eye roll. BU, while you can complain about his toughness, did and has done since, everything right WRT how you should dish out criticism and compliments. Praise is public, correct in private. That's managing 101, and BU obviously understands this. I don't blame MS for not liking to deal with a coach like that, everyone has a different mental makeup, but I blame differing philosophical views on the departure.Hoping nothing but success for MS, except for his team losing in 2days.

I'll be booing them all... Smith, Tilmon, Pickett, Martin, and anyone else they run out there in black and yellow including the cheerleaders competing to hold up the girls the longest and that stupid Tiger mascot. :noidea:

!00% yes on the orange throwbacks. Wont the yellow orange clash too much? One team will have to wear white/black/blue.

They have definitely done it in the past, including last year:

I know we did it in the 2004-05 game, too.

Hi Calvin,

I did some searching, and didn't really find definitions around usage.
He's second leading player for minutes played, PPG, and first in 3pt shooting. I don't see any way to call that a role player, personally. He's also their second leading player in rebounds, despite being a guard. So I'm going to disagree with the role player characterization. He's someone we'll have to target defensively.

My staff just surprised me today with lower level tickets for Christmas. I am now getting excited for the game. Hope the beloved put in a full game's effort and ramp back up the defensive pressure.

Underwood press conference
https://twitter.com/TKissack20

Underwood on last year's Braggin' Rights game: "First year was eye opening. I'm a huge fan of rivalries, been a part of a few of em, and this one lived up the hype... It was fun."

Underwood: I think [Jeremiah Tilmon's] a pro. When he's not in foul trouble, I think you see how impactful he can be.

Underwood: The one thing [Missouri] does a great job of is pushing early offense and shooting threes... They shoot it early, so you have to be careful with that. Once they settle in the halfcourt, there's no doubt they have an emphasis to get it to Tilmon.

Underwood: Mark Smith's a good player. He's always been a terrific shooter... When left open, he doesn't miss... He's played like a veteran.

Underwood: You have to be at your highest levels in terms of communication. Huddles are important, leadership on the court is important... When you have a packed house, it becomes challenging. The rest of it should become fun.

Underwood: Tevian's worked his tail off. He's gotten to spend quality time with Fletch... He's been very positive

Underwood on Chicago recruiting talk: "What article?... We have an unbelievable staff, we work really, really hard, and we're going to continue to do that."

It isn't proper to use usage rate as a rigid way to determine how important a player is to a team. That is just not what it measures.

The two highest usage rates on Illinois are Griffin and De La Rosa (both 26+). Kipper's is under 20. Kipper isn't a "role player"
