Illini Board had a good breakdown with video of the ball screen offense and why it's utilized.

Rewind - The Ball Screen Offense

Some may not like it, but there's a purpose to it being used.
I’d say about 70% of teams in college basketball run “the weave”. It’s purpose is to make the defense work. (Being very conservative with that estimate)
It isn’t usually particularly effective in the first few minutes, sort of like body shots aren’t going to knock a boxer out in the 1st round.

If it’s not clear to you already some folks in the media really have a vendetta against Illinois.

I think in this case it’s the fact that we stomped the kitties this year in a second half beat down of epic proportions

When you do not play smart offense and team basketball NW will make you pay. Rutgers started playing sloppy, one-one basketball, as they are prone to do, and NW closed at 14 point deficient in about 3 minutes with heads up defense. The have lost some close games and had a rough season, but i don't see them quitting. I am betting its is another grind it out B10 basketball game, with the foregone conclusion being another Illini victory.

Agree this will be a grind...disagree that in this league any Illini victory is a foregone conclusion.

NW is in top 5 in B10 in steals, assists and 3p made. Every one of their top 9 players shows over 30% from 3p.

That said If they are hot (like is typical for teams we play....i.e Lidell OSU game)...they could make us sweat. We have a target on our backs as #6 team in nation...if we look past NW we will pay.

Yeah, them and the refs, and the BIG scheduling office. We need to get to the bottom of this conspiracy.

At times we do not seem to be as effective against zone defenses. In a previous game UWood had Grandison at the high post taking and making passes which seemed to open things up. Any thoughts on why we have not seen that lately?

"Me too" on Grandy high post.

Grandy was masterful in that role against Penn State...the offense basically ran through him and he made good decisions.. we were very productive on offense when we ran that.

Yeah, I know that.

It seems like plenty of folks on here haven't picked that up despite our team running it for years. Honestly, this is likely the best we've looked running it

Also while they are moving the defense around Kofi is down on the block trying to get a good angle for a post-up

I cringe every time they get stuck in weave mode. Curbelo wasn't great yesterday, but when he first came off the bench they stopped the weave BS and passed with purpose. More of that, please!
I hate the weave. Movement and passing without the weave will create open looks as you will move the D and find holes. It’s annoying to watch

The weave is tailored to a guy like Ayo who can get a handoff and get downhill to the basket. If you notice they also do a couple handoffs to setup a ball screen action w/ Kofi. I don't mind the weave at all actually, it feels like this year we execute it decently well.

I can see that but it seems like we waist time running it.

But that's the thing, its a set play and not just wasting time. Waisting time would be someone dribbling the ball for 15 seconds at the top of the key with nobody else moving.
Which can be accomplished in any number of ways, not only through rote figure-eight jogging patterns. Weave does not equal ball-screen offense. There's a reason you don't see the weave in the NBA.

I'd rather see them do this for 15 seconds:

I’m biased because my team runs the weave and I love it. When you have multiple ball handlers who can turn the corner on the screen and a solid roll/post big it gets you fantastic looks.

When we ran it a million times at Wisconsin last year into the ball screen, and threw all our counters at them as well and won the game, I don’t remember any complaining about the weave.

I think we can all agree though that the pinch post offense BU ran his first couple years was awful.

A bit off topic, but I saw the Globetrotters a few times at Wharton Field House in Moline as a kid...always a blast.
