There's no certified guarantee Ty would've been the answer. We already have lack of shooting... would adding more make things all that much better?
I think we are perfectly good at shooting... when we take good shots. When we just jack up contested threes and fadeaways all game, our percentage understandably drops abysmally.

You are dead-on, I think. We miss because we rush shots, slightly. Our shooters are nervous, other than KJ and Tomi.

We have shooters, but not shot makers.

The last dead-eye shooter we had was Plummer. Remember him? No defense, until he learned. Undersized, but full of character.

For the roster that will begin to be built in, what, 9 or 10 weeks? If that future is shot-making (it is), give the money to guys who will come here to MAKE shots.

Why do we struggle so much just to get the ball inbounds? All 3 in the last 15 seconds were ugly
What are the odds that the staff did not discuss the fouls to give during the time out? I would say pretty good based on how things played out. 60% no, 40% yes. Would love to know the answer!

Something I thought about last night with Davis. His first couple shots he seemed so rushed to catch and just fire it up. The one he made he took an extra heartbeat to set himself before taking the shot and it was pure. I've noticed this a lot with Ben, Will, and some others too that they seem to be shooting as fast as possible which is hurting their shots.

Last thing I will say to the doom and gloomers tonight. There are 4 things that, IMO, are undisputable.

1) KJ and Tomi PnR was one of our best actions offensively. They clearly had a chemistry like nobody else on the team.

2) With Tomi's ability to spread the floor, plus his above average passing, we were getting multiple baskets off backdoor cuts almost every game.

3) The twin towers with Tomi and Morez was starting0 to cook. This is something we saw very little of to start the year. Morez was looking better, and the high-low game was starting to cause teams problems.

4) Will Riley's scoring potential is still through the roof, and we might be seeing it more as the season progresses. 19 against MSU and now 16 against Nebraska.

If we agree all that is true, i don't know how you can't get excited for what we can be when everyone is healthy and the confidence is back.
Illini bball players ...
As coach BU states ...grow up.
Quit throwing the ball away
This is Power 5 bball not High School or JUCO.
I am not happy as a long time Illini bball fan.
Play ball !

Shooters anticipate shooting, they are prepared and not surprised or rushed. That is why they are rare, Plummer is a perfect example. Shuckers act like shooters but don't hunt the shot like shooters so they are not sure its going in when they release the ball, unlike shooters.

Yeah, I think what you've observed is exactly what's happening. Why? I don't really know, but it happens all the time, team after team, across high school and college. I mentioned in another thread tonight the idea of belief: belief in the shooter by his coach. It is powerful, and also a liability. I think the way to manage it is to have a head coach who is prone to believing (a one-true believer, kinda crazy) and a staff who are in a position to give trusted (really) words of advice.

I think it's something about games too and it's probably a big part of why Brad still believes they are elite shooters. In a practice environment they are probably not rushing the shot as much and these guys absolutely CAN shoot the cover off it.

I am not sure how you are intending for this set of questions to be perceived, but it is a testament to the quality of teams that Coach Underwood has put out on the floor the last few years that the Illini are favored to win so many games. Yes, Illinois won as road dogs at Oregon, but there are much fewer opportunities to pick up underdog wins.

When you are consistently ranked higher, it is much more difficult to pick up underdog wins and more prominent to pickup an upset loss. Just part of the business of being a top ranked program.
More of an statement of not winning close games as a favorite both home and road.

I don't think lacking shooting is the issue. It's shot selection, toughness, and athleticism.

Ty has good size and athleticism and has always been a freakishly good rebounder for his size. Having one of Ty or Morez on the court at all times would be a boost to the roster.

Also, I think Ty and Dra are really the two guys on the roster that are/were completely bought in and give everything they have all game. That type of energy and effort tends to be infectious.

I think there would have been a good chance that with a healthy Tomi a lineup of KJ, DGL, Tre, Ty, and Tomi is the best lineup we have and you could sub Riley in for more shooting.

He would have to agree to that. It's not like we told him to redshirt. It was his decision.
Was it? I am not disagreeing, but I know that coaches have for decades presented "the facts" to players, and they have then reacted. "You won't get off the bench." "Then I have to transfer, Coach! I need to get minutes!" .... It's never, ever black and white. I wish it was clearer, I wish our coaches were heroes, I wish our players were heroes too. But it isn't that way.

I apologize for lecturing to someone who needs no such lectures.

This team stinks? Do you not remember what we did on that West Coast trip?
This team lacks depth. We need everyone healthy to be competitive. That’s really it.

I think we have a new record for the number of uses of "shooters" in a single post.

We really need this game. It seems obvious (to me) we miss Tomi terribly. Such things happen to many, if not most, teams. Have to suck it up and need this game. We are currently just a middle of the pack team in conference play, only one game above .500. Still, pomery has us at #18. I don't see why.

A good game to start Will over Ben, OSU is not particularly big outside of Bradshaw and Morez has to take him when he’s on the floor anyway

My only optimism is that KJ can’t possibly play worse right?

This team has already played their way out of the conference title race. The rest of the season is whether they can finish strong and end up in the upper half of the conference or not. They need a makeover quick. The shooting from downtown Urbana isn't working. I am sick of hearing the ball clang off the rim 30+ times a game. Take the damn ball to the basket and draw a foul, then hopefully you can make a free throw.
There are 10 scheduled games left. I don't see any of them to be easy. With the likes of OSU who is playing their best ball, Rutgers who has a spell over us, Minnesota who has figured out how to play, UCLA, MSU, Wisconsin, Duke, Michigan, Iowa and Purdue. It is hard for me to see us winning any of those games the way they are playing. Even though some of those games are in Champaign that doesn't seem to be a strong hold for this team. Then will we see Duke totally destroy us on National TV?
I wonder which team is the real Illini basketball team of 24-25 season. Is it the team that buried Oregon, PSU, Indiana? or is it the team that blew a game against top ranked Tennessee, MSU, blew a 10-point lead against Northwestern, Team who sleepwalked threw USC, Team that was obliterated by Maryland on their home floor and a team that clanged 44-3 pointers at Nebraska and lost by a team that had lost 6 games in a row? I think they are more like the latter rather than the former.
I was looking forward to this year's version of the Illini but frankly the last 6 games turn my stomach watching them dribble into a crowd and get the ball taken away, sloppy pass after sloppy pass, players just running up and down the court contributing nothing but time. The coach walking up and down the sidelines with no particular game plan or any adjustments that might turn the tide like quit shooting from Alaska!

the low energy of the crowds at home games translates into low energy and enthusiasm on the floor, not certain what can be done about it though. I think about past teams and the crowd's energy, wish we could bring that back, sad really.

The energy should always start on the floor, not in the stands. If our players need a boost from the crowd to get going then we got the wrong dudes playing for us. Believe me, if our guys play with energy, the crowd will take it to another level.
