Huh, I wonder if a zone defense might help with this?
A zone typically is used to stop a team inside. It would be a poor choice against a good shooting team (not even mentioning zero minutes playing zone or how much time spent practicing zone defense)

Me to random Illini fan in ATL Airport: “ILL!

Random Illini fan” There you go.”

I never throw out the ILL to someone because i’m never sure i’m going to get the return INI.

I think we actually match up better without Jayden. I realize he'd probably be guarding Wynter, but they'll figure out ways to get him switched on to Pickett.

Glad to hear he's recovering, but wonder why it would be a game time decision. He has to have been cleared and been practicing, no? Hope he's feeling 100%!
According to reports, he has been practicing

I just hope the players feel as strongly as we do about already having lost twice to PSU, and do something about it from the tip. And that they are not thinking they can rely on their ability to make up deficits...an early lead by PSU will cause an immediate change in my drink order at the bar, from suds to serious.
I'm not waiting, switching just before tipoff, you know, just in case. Now where did I hide that last bottle of Blantons?

Illini takes lots of Threes... and doesn't make the right percentage of them. But they shoot those Threes because they have to. They just don't have enough guys right now that are great at penetration and mid-range. Yes, the Illini need better shooters from Threeland but they also need these other weapons of a well-balanced offense. And also, better ball-handling in general and not so many silly turnovers.

Defensive pressure is going to be ramped up in the Tournaments so the Illini will have to work extra hard to get decent looks from Three. Lots of quick ball movement... open up somebody on the weak side... and rifle the ball to him for a decent Three attempt. And crash the boards.

And dust off some room in the trophy case (hey, set the right tone in the locker room, right?
You nailed something important: we consistently jack up 3s despite not shooting them well because....we don't really have other options. Mayer and Shannon can slash, but neither is consistent from mid-range (and we don't have an excellent shot at getting their misses; both Ayo and Kofi are sorely missed!).

Still, I'm optimistic. We (generally) play well at home and have performed above-average on neutral courts.

Can we hold Picket to his season average and find a way to make a dent in their 3 point shooting?????

So according to our handy calculator, the Nittany Lions went 24-for-53 from 3-point range (45.3%) in the two games, Illinois went 14-for-50 (28.0%), and Penn State finished a combined plus-27 on the scoreboard — despite getting outrebounded by a combined 61-52 margin.

Now, there’s a good chance you’re thinking, “Big whoop — two games is hardly a big sample size.” And you’d be right.

So let’s analyze some season-long stats, beginning with this one:

No team in the Big Ten made more 3-point shots this season both overall (334) and in league play (209) then Penn State. And it wasn’t even close, as Iowa checked in at No. 2 both overall (254) and in conference (169).

What about 3-point shooting percentage? Penn State has made 38.9% of its treys overall, which ranks 12th in the nation and second in the Big Ten (behind only Michigan State at 40.1%).

In conference-only games, Penn State (39.4%) again trails only Michigan State (41.5%).

Which Big Ten teams do the Illini trail in 3-point shooting? Every single one. Yep, Illinois is 14th in the 14-team league at 31.0% overall and a woeful 29.1% in conference games. That 31.0% figure? It ranks 334th out of 363 Division I schools.
You did the math!!!

Check out Illinois' stats:

Now, let's do Penn State:

Illinois doesn't have a *single* player above 35% from three. Penn State has three over 40%. Skyy Clark leads 3pt% for guards, while Shannon has taken more 3s than than any other player. I don't think this is a "shot selection" problem. It has more to do with the lack of a point guard, and the many different rotations we have played. I also suspect that our lax 3pt defense comes from the need to get defensive rebounds. But, I might be wrong...
