I think the better question is what quarter does Altmyer get rested? I am assuming he will get about a half of football, and I expect us to be fairly vanilla on offense. Save a lot of the playbook for Duke.

Exciting to be under 3 weeks until the season!
He’ll play enough to put away the game while also working with his new receivers. RB’s will also get a chance to show what they can do this season. It’s a super-scrimmage.

Looking at Western Illinois the last few seasons, they have been a complete doormat in the FCS. Went winless in both '22 and '23 before their current coach got them to 4 wins last year in his first season. Predicting a similar score to the EIU game last season.

They used to have a quality program in the 90s. Bryan Cox and Rodney Harrison are two players from that era. Watched Western play Montana and Mississippi State in the playoffs. Sad to witness the decline of WIU.

Having lived in Macomb for many years before moving to Connecticut to be close to my daughter and her family, I went to several WIU football and basketball games. WIU will always have a hard time competing in sports as they have very little resources. The town is small (about 15,000, I would guess) with the nearest decent size town being Peoria about 60 miles away. There is very little industry or money-making businesses in the area. At least they are now in the Ohio Valley Conference where they can somewhat compete.
Macomb, though is a great place to raise a family as it is very safe and the school district has good teachers, thanks to WIU and the spouses of teachers at WIU.

sadly , the same has happened to NIU, SIU and EIU.
Of those 4 directional schools, not sure all will be around in 10 years. Really doubtful all will still have football programs

Maybe these programs can forgo $NIL and $20M payroll. Stay with old model. You get scholarship and thats it.

Lots of Div 3 programs that don't even offer sports scholarships.

Like to see Trey Petty get some snaps along with Valentine and maybe one of the freshman rb. Also would like to see some reserved OL play. Someone like Zafir Steward. Same on d. Some of our redshirt db's. How does some of our 24 freshman look during scrimmage? Should win big.

Sounds like Boyd has passed Petty on the depth chart

there are VERY FEW schools outside the P4 that are paying NIL in any significant way . The money is simply not there due to lack of media deals .

if you are a player at one of those schools and are any good , you transfer out after frosh or sophomore year to a P4 school that can pay you something .

WIU is the most likely to be closing within the next 10 years. NIU and SIU are fine and I'd be shocked if they closed anytime soon. EIU has started to recover from the school nearly closing during the Rauner budget crunch era and enrollment has gotten better as the years have gone on.

ISU is also thriving (more or less) but I have no idea how NIL money might be in play. Crowds are stil small, even though they spent a small fortune renovating the east side of the stadium as well as the south end zone.

ISU prepping for a move to the MAC?

as much as i’d love that, i wonder if travel expenses would be too much. niu and wmu seemed like comparative neighbors in the mac, but that must be at least a 5-hour bus ride

It wouldn't be the worst move. Particularly if the MAC scrounges up a better media deal.

Had a class with Bryan Cox when I attended WIU for first 2 years. First time I referred to someone my age as "sir". Big, bad looking dude.
