I was watching one of their games and the announcer had an interesting stat. Wisconsin's starting five are all older than the Chicago Bulls. Imagine if they come back for a bonus year. They might need walkers.

Disclaimer: I didn't verify this ... :sneaky:

Kinda hard to get a peg on Wisconsin, they've been up and down lately, only 4-3 in the last seven, however, they are a well balanced team and I think they have at least five players averaging close to 10 points a game, Illinois has been in two straight wars, this game probably won't be any different.
Agreed. Wisconsin won't beat themselves. All five guys can hit 3's, so they are never out of a game. We nearly got caught in a "trap" game at Indiana. (Indiana isn't bad, but we came out lethargic) Really need to focus on getting off to a fast start. Wisconsin will do all it can to shorten the game. We will have to respect every possession. We can't afford to fall behind early.

Wisconsin is only 3-3 in road games, wins against MSU, Rutgers and Maryland, and losses to Marquette, Michigan and PSU. As long as we don't shoot ourselves in the foot, we shouldn't have a problem winning this.

Or as long as they don't shoot lights out from deep. Gotta know where Weiskamp is at all times.

Quite incredibly, this will be one of the easiest games left on the schedule. Trying to guess the spread --- maybe similar to AT Indiana. ILL -4

As I slipped into relative "indifference" over the past 9 years, I hadn't realized how many horrendous losing streaks we had had developed in the Big 10 --- due to all of the losing under Weber and Groce (consecutive losses to WISC, consecutive road losses in Bloomington, etc.)

Sure is nice to finally be putting all of those behind us! Now let's make it 2 wins in a row against the Badgers!!!

Yep, that losing streak to Wisconsin was almost unbelievable ... from 2011 to 2019, we beat them ZERO times for a 15-game losing streak. I remember seeing one time that this was - unsurprisingly - the longest losing streak we have had to anyone in program history.

There IS still another streak to break against Wisconsin, though. We still have lost seven straight to Wisconsin in Champaign. :( I don't know if we will beat them on Saturday, but I think this team is dialed in and more than capable. If we do lose, I hope it's because a lights-out Badgers team won a close, hard fought game. I would say we come out with our best performance of the year and make a statement, but Wisconsin always seems to be an awkward matchup for us, so I will say we tough-it-out once again for a close win:

#12 Illinois 71
#19 Wisconsin 68

PLEASE give us a better officiated game, though!

That is almost guaranteed. No way could the officiating be worse than it was at the Indiana game.

Damonte does get in his fair share fights and resulting techincials.
Every team needs an "Enforcer"
"On a basketball team all players can’t be all things. The essence of the game is selectivity, knowing limitations, and abiding by them. Some players are capable of exercising many skills, but their team situation requires that they concentrate on one. A player can play an on-court role only if everyone agrees. Roles don’t come from a job description sheet. There is more to them than physical skill. They must evolve within the context of the team, so that creative spontaneity is preserved while at the same time self-sacrifice is volunteered. Of course roles also serve an important function in the development of a championship team. They determine the amount of harmony that exists among teammates during the season’s eight months of constant travel. A team cannot have four comedians, five leaders, six fighters, three thinkers, and seven darlings of the press. Each person must find his place and sense his role within the group."

I don't want to jinx it, but could it have been any worse?

Not sure how. I was telling my girlfriend that B1G officiating is always bad, but this was a whole other level. The marquee, difference-making calls (like the ghost technical on Trent, having IU in the bonus with so many minutes to go and taking away Ayo's three-point play with that ridiculous charge call) went against us, but there were a lot of more minor calls going against IU, too. It was just awful all around. The literal only explanation I can think of is that the refs felt they kept getting in a hole with both coaches and felt compelled to dish out "makeup calls" like every other play! Lol.

Our game on Saturday will be massive for the Big Ten standings. The only game (besides ours) that will affect the top ~half of the standings for the moment is #24 Purdue at Northwestern. Assuming Purdue can win, that makes the standings look like this before the Illinois/Wisconsin result:

1. #4 Michigan: 8-1 (.889)
2. #12 Illinois: 8-3 (.727)
3. #7 Ohio State: 9-4 (.692)
4. #19 Wisconsin: 8-4 (.667)
5. #8 Iowa: 7-4 (.636)
6. #24 Purdue: 8-5 (.615)

If we win, we remain in second at 9-3 (.750) and Wisconsin drops to 8-5 (.615). If we lose, we move down to third (fourth) at 8-4 (.667), while OSU and Wisconsin jump into a second place tie at 9-4 (.692).

This is a huge game. Considering Wisconsin would have two more losses than us (and FOUR more than Michigan) and Iowa is in a bit of a funk (and plays at IU soon...), a win tomorrow would put us on a path for a three-way race with Michigan and OSU. A loss puts us right back down in the shuffle, probably on a path to be looking up at the top, considering our schedule. Obviously, we could end up nabbing one at Wisconsin, at OSU or at Michigan (if it's played), but it would be HUGE to just keep the winning streak going and beat the Badgers tomorrow!
