I actually think we match up pretty well with them.

Davis and Davidson are their key, and our two best on ball defenders happen to play their spots. We have a little size disadvantage (forgot Davidson is 6’4) but we should be able to hug them at the 3 pt line and force them into contested 2’s. Davis is a great player but he’s not quite as long as McGowens or Mathurin and I don’t think he’s quite as quick either. DMW should at least be able to slow him down and make him work to get his.

In the front court, bigs that can dribble and stretch the floor give us trouble (see Pete Nance last game. Crowl does stretch the floor but is not a volume 3 pt shooter, at only 2.5/ a game and just over 30% on the year. He may knock a few more down that he typically does but not probably not enough to make up for the mismatch with Kofi on the other end.

Biggest X factor from a matchup perspective IMO is Hepburn. Really really good player and I think he will be a thorn in our side for the next 4 years. Had good size wt 6’2, 210 lbs and looks to be physical. These types of guards have bullied Plum in the past. We just need Plum to contain him and hold him reasonably close to his average.

Of course having Belo back would be a huge help, but love what the freshman have done, and I think any of the 3 as a bigger, shooting wing has the potential to go off based on matchups. As long as we shoot reasonably well from 3 and they don’t go out of their mind hitting a bunch of contested shots I like our chances.
I am going to put in my weekly plug for my favorite player, Coleman Hawkins… I was at the NW game and he seemed disappointed with his limited minutes… Hope to see more of him against Wisconsin…

I'm sorry, but I just have to chuckle each time I read "playing without our two best players." In a lineup that includes guards Williams, Plummer, Frazier and Grandison, I'm sorry folks, but AC is not one of our two best players.
I'm not sure whether Belo is the 2nd best player for 5th best player. However, if you heard the coaches comments after that last game, it is the Illinois team. Not any particular player. There is a synergy to the team when everyone is available. When one or two key pieces are missing, it can have a significant impact whether it is the "best" player or the xth best player who is missing. When trying to determine an order of "best" players, how do you compare a shooter to a rebounder to a defensive stopper to a play maker to a ????. They are all key parts of a team. Belo is a key part since he brings a dynamic that is missing when he is not playing. So it is probably more correct to say that Illinois has been missing two or more of their key players at various times during this season. In addition, key players have been dealing with COVID hangover and other nagging injuries that have reduced their effectiveness.

From a long-term perspective, Curbelo is not only one of our two best players. He's our best player. An absloute wizard with the ball who has Steve Nash-like handles and court vision. I expect him eventually to be an NBA All-Star.

They could call me out. Davison would be fouled out in the first 5 minutes of the game, with 2 flop calls.

If Providence could play this weekend I think this game can be played safely. Illinois knows how to deal with snow unlike other places I lived

Also, isn't there some story about one of the games back in the 80s where there was a massive snowstorm in Champaign and the refs for the game couldn't make it so they just brought 3 fans in attendance who happened to have officiating experience on the court to officiate?

I was one of about 4500 in attendence that day vs Kentucky. Yes that is correct. The late Joe B Hall said it was one of the best officiated games he could recall! Lol Unfortunately I am not going to be able to make it from Peoria given the weather and use my seats just 7 rows of the floor. It really sucks. Selfishly I wouldn't be upset if this was postponed! Lol Hopefully someone will buy em. I'm f it's as bad as they say it could be I have to be able to get there and back for work and that isn't a given. Given the magnitude of this storm and past experiences with games on days like this I expect it to only be about half full if that and a lot of folks that spent money on tickets will just have to absorb the expense and enjoy it on tv.

LOL. That makes me feel better about the time I ordered a bunch of packages of black golf balls. Impossible to see in the grass.
That's hilarious. Talk about a boutique product. Only useful for playing on a light dusting of snow.

I can't imagine it ever getting cancelled even though the bad weather is probably going to hurt our home-court advantage. Figures.

The old-timers here (and it makes me sad to think of myself and '83-84 as old timers) remember the Kentucky game when the weather was so bad the officials didn't make it to the game at Assembly Hall but the game was still played and Kentucky won a close one. Did we pull three refs out of the stands to work the game? Could you even imagine that happening now? Considering how much of every postgame thread is spent on officiating
I am pretty sure that’s what they did Saturday at NW. Those guys can’t actually be getting paid for that. Can they?
