Purdue 13, Illinois 9 Postgame

it is hard to watch him struggle time after time after time .
imo, his opportunity to be the starter for us has passed.

There is nothing in the world easier than being an armchair quarterback. When you are the guy who has to decide whether to put your opponent on the six yard line, and making them drive 94 yards against your defense that has only allowed two field goals for the entire game OR perhaps missing a field goal and giving the opponent a much shorter field - well that's a tough decision. Sitting on a couch and making these calls is easy. JMHO
Yeh, the d had allowed only 6 points to that point, but Purdue's new QB had been moving the ball through the air against us effectively. Stopped only by interceptions: one an unusually spectacular defensive play, the other a freak play.

For all the Peters hate (and I'm not a fan), I thought he did look good throughout the second half, until that last set of downs. I don't think Art gets us to the 20 for those last four plays. (I do think throwing for the end zone four times was bad play calling.)

2 things

I feel like we need to get on the self scout a bit. We run on first down probably 95% of the time. How about a play action or a screen when defenses are teed up on us?

4th down. I was at the Maryland game and actually thought the punt was the right move, because McCray was out. The rhythm Reggie love seemed to have in the first 2 games seemed to have subsided and idk that I trusted us to pick it up there. Yesterday with McCray just eating I was about giving him the ball. Purdue was having trouble with the jet action power up the middle runs, Maryland was not, and I felt like we ran more of those last week than yesterday. Just feel, could be wrong.

At the least you can say BB has an identity and solid philosophy in those situations. We can argue whether data shows he can reconsider, and it can be a legitimate argument. The way defense played yesterday, they deserved that win. But also, when you’re playing as well as our defense had, you can’t allow teams to go 80+ on you for TDs in crunch time.

Was not pointed at you or anyone on this board pruman. I know we are all die hards. I thought the D played a damn good game and could hold up for another drive myself. Coach B is a defensive coach at heart so i can understand the decision. Especially how erratic Peters is. Its a tough call and im sure coach didnt sleep much last night. I just think its way too early to be asking or speaking of any kind of wholesale changes to the staff. They are still in the feeling out process themselves of the roster and each other.
I’m in this camp. The losses are frustrating, but the team is competing to the end of the game and not run off the field before halftime. I thought yesterday was headed that way after the first couple series. They haven’t figured out how to close games, but I’m optimistic that they will one way or another even if it takes another season or 2.

What are we experts going to do when on Thursday PM the coaches say that Brandon Peters had a great week of practice . . .

Agree about always running on 1st down. It's hard to have a passing attack when we basically pass on 3rd and long. Our OC does not keep the defence guessing, which is how you complete more passes when they don't expect them. I would take any of the OC's we have played over the last 4 games. Why do always have a one dimensional offense. Please bring in a young and fun OC.

Bielema saying he would make the same decision 100 times over makes it very difficult not to be overly reactionary. How can a person who gets paid this much willfully, publicly sabotage his own work over and over? How can this end any way but badly?

First impression without going back and watching, they ran more rollouts on that last drive than they did the rest of the game. Could very well be wrong, not rewatching to confirm my feelings.

It’s been shown that the statistical probability of winning is better if you go for it at that time of the game, on that yard marker and with the lead.

BB is pridefully going against his own “stats drive decisions” mantra when it comes to teaching football basics.

He is wrong, and he’s too proud to admit it. And I’m not a BB hater, I want him to succeed.

Maybe if we had a top 5 defense I’d have trusted them to get another stop. But Purdue had driven to within the 10 yard line on multiple occasions. They are a dynamic offense even without a bunch of players. They were bound to punch it in at some point.

Had I told BB we’d hold Purdue to only 13 points, I bet he’d be VERY happy with that. If at that same decision point at the 9 minute mark yesterday, it was still 9-6, and he knew without a doubt Purdue would still get to 13 points, he would have made a different choice.

And while he can’t know the future, he can see the game for more than just that one play. He had to know that Purdue was gonna find a way to get down the field. It’s what high powered offenses do in crunch time. Maryland just did it to us.

And with that sort of knowledge (which almost every Illini fan watching already had), he should have realized that keeping that offense off the field or getting more points to offset what that offense might do is the right choice.

Going for it on 4th is risky, but we want to see risk. We want to see a winning attitude and competitive spirit. In that situation, there are three plays.

Go for it, FG, and punt.

Only one of those choices is a near 100% guarantee to let the other team’s offense back on the field.

I wonder which choice Jeff Brohm wanted us to make…

I'll say it again, when you are a blah offense and you need to make something happen, block a punt.

I would certainly like to see Luke Ford and Isiah Williams used more. McCray is a beast, Peters on the other hand....man I sure think Art can atleast get us 1 TD
I don't think Art is any better than Peters, but not any worse. He will be here next year and Peters will not however

I knew the script for the rest of the game as soon we punted. I knew we lost right then and there, so sould have our coach.

Maybe BB is playing a long game: he's setting us up for running a fake punt against Northwestern, when it's fourth and short in Northwestern territory, late in the fourth quarter, and we're up a score. (If I recall right, Hayes is a perfect one for one on converting fake punts). 🙃

In talking about the decision later, BB seemed to be focussing on our chances of winning being pretty good with pinning them deep. And they were! But the point is that our chances were EVEN BETTER if we went for it (even though no one realized that until a couple years ago.)
