BB’s postgame was worrisome. He basically said a break here, a good deflection there, and we’d be ok.
I’d much prefer we fully own this horrendous play and state a much much higher standard for this program than hoping a lucky deflection goes our way in order to pull out a miracle win at home vs a bad team on a 16 game losing streak. Isn’t that where we were before we hired you Brett?
I don’t know what can be done to show improvement this season, but I know it starts with the sober acknowledgement
of what we are right now: broken. So start developing & showing us what the young players can do Brett- at this point we all need to see hope for the future. I’d personally rather win only 3 this year and feel good about our key players developing for next year than win 4 or 5 with guys that are gone after this year anyway.
You are at a critical crossroads right now Brett. If you want a future at IL beyond next year, you’d be wise to recognize that, and act accordingly vs falsely believing we just need a few breaks.

that was my thought, except why would it seemingly have more impact on the offense? The defense was bad, but not horrible. Good enough to win this game. The offense, especially the QB, looked off.

Overall, there wasn't the enthusiasm one might expect for homecoming.
I thought we might be ok but when we had them stalling on a 3rd and 9 and rushed three giving up 14 yards. I realized we were going to be in for a long year.

The worst single game performance of the Bielema era.

Two types of bad losses:

• the ones with the most heartbreak
• the worst single game performance where the team just looks awful

2022 Michigan will always be the first one.

Today was the second one.
2024 Minnesota at home with a chance to qualify for the CFB wayyyyyy higher than 2022 Michigan IMO.

Still blew it to Purdue (Ironic) the game before Michigan but I digress.

Today without question the most embarassing, inexcusible loss of the Bert era.

Some positives for today:

- Michigan lost
- Iowa lost
- We always had 11 players on the field for defense (although I questioned it based on the play at times)
- The crowd was into it for the first half and the students showed up. (Although some still need to learn to not yell when we go for it on 4th down)

It's been a fun ride the last two years. Too bad Indiana's run overshadowed our teams.

Instead of just complaining about how bad the players, coaches, AD, and just about everyone else is, maybe you should put some skin in the game and make even a small donation to ICON. Iconforillini.com

Today’s effort was pathetic. Something is off with this team and I am starting to wonder if it’s BB and the staff. People on the board have already mentioned the problems. This team is slow and appears directionless on both sides of the ball. The crowd tried to stand behind the team but let’s be honest, there was very little to cheer about today.

Two comments. First of all, Go White Sox!! Secondly, if Hauck did, in fact, walk away on his own, it was an incredibly cowardly and selfish move. You take the job, you should put everything you got into it for a year. Instead, he hung Illinois and the assistants who came with him out to dry. Have no respect for that guy.

Because Larry Geis donated the money specifically designated for stadium renovations, with roughly 30% going to the jumbotron scoreboard. Diverting the funds to NIL for for football players would have been all kinds of unethical. Possibly criminal?
Hopefully Larry agrees with, in for a penny in for a pound. Hes sitting there thinking I didnt spend all that money so fans could more comfortably watching the worst team in the big ten.

We are the worst team in the B10 and it’s not that close.
The program is in crisis, which is unacceptable in year 6 of a regime. BB will get next year, but something has to change ( money, recruiting) to start believing he has a future past next year. The promise of BB was guaranteed respectability. 6 years in, that promise proved to be wrong.
Really? He has won more games in back to back years than any Illinois coach ever, only one to win 2 bowl games in back to back years never been done, he has won more games in 5 years than any Illinois coach Illinois coach ever? There are all sorts of those kind of stats out there that I don’t have time to look up.

I have had this kind of a “disagreement” many time in the basketball board and usually comments (in the same vain as yous) “the promise turned to be wrong” - they turn out to be either just very uniformed fans (maybe younger?) that don’t realize that Illinois has stunk at football for like 60+ years, or it is hyperbole in the moment? I choose to think in this case it is the latter?

Step back this was a poorly coached game, no question, we have NIL issues for football (this is no question where is Mr. Kahn who has 4 times the wrath of Cuban and Wagner at IU?) How about the being the first non white college builder of a football team like does for his NFL commercials? Anyways back to my point.

Bert messed up trying the 3-3-5 that is for sure, I for sure hated not taking the points on the one FG that was just terrible. One game, one season is simply not “ the promise was false”. Hiring Bert came with no promise. He actually has delivered beyond any coach at this point in his Illinois coaching career. You had to realize when you fire your D coordinator 3 games in it is going to be a mess this year?

Fire him after next year, unless you get a bunch more money, prepare for the Gary Moeller years, if you can remember those you will get my post very well.

No, that would not be ok! It would have still been a very badly played game and just as discouraging.

The OSU game was much more enjoyable and encouraging than this one would have been even had we pulled a miraculous W out of our shorts.

It's becoming a major issue where every season we seem to have a deflating loss for the season or just a bad loss

2022-7-1 chance for big ten division title is ours and we drop 2 in a row to mich st and purdue at home

2023-get destoryed by purdue then lose right to nebraska

2024-lose to minnesota when we were 6-2

2025- lose to washington deflating playoff hopes then lose to a bad wisconsin team

2026-deflating loss to duke and a awful loss to purdue

I am serious I mostly just enjoy Illinois football for what it is once a decade (twice this one!) we’re pretty good (never great - in my life time great team? 1984 Rose Bowl team? But they weren’t great Mizzou and UCLA both smoked them?

I have had so many posts about Brad I would like to take back due to my emotions. Brad has bad coaching games many, but you can clearly see Illinois on UConn’s sort of trajectory of 20 years ago. We do have the money in Baasketball and I have been totally wrong on BU. I am even to the point if he continues his unique approach to our program thinking Tyler might me fine next? Crazy?

Try to realize what we have here Bert is probably not an A+ coach, but I THINK he is an A+ coach for Illinois? All I can tell all of you (like almost 100% on this football board are just at the same point I was with BU about 4-5 years ago - is he the guy?).

It’s simple if we spend some more money on football Bert is about perfect for us. He had a bad game, a terrible game, if he alone was forced into the Hauck (spelling?) decision it was bad. But this season, even if he looses every game from here on out, has absolutely ZERO impact on his future at Illinois (at least at this point?). He is a good coach guys, he has a mess and it maybe at least part (maybe it is all his fault), but come on we just beat two SEC teams to end our year? We have never done anything like that?

You can’t count on getting breaks. We need players to step up and make plays. This team lacks leadership. BB can complain all he wants about nil but we just lost to 2 teams that spend less than us.

I’m afraid the 3 win / 4 win seasons have returned. Appreciate BB giving it a shot but this program will never be Iowa or Wisconsin unfortunately. Love the potential of the freshman class but afraid Illini won’t be able to $$ hang onto them because of the need to go get portal help. No win situation.

Why wasn’t Boyd given a few snaps once the game was clearly out of reach? Invest in the future. Give the younger guys a little hope. Nothing to lose.
So that I didn’t take issue with as the game technically was never out of reach. In fact you pick up the onside kick and you’re only down 7 with the ball and over a minute left.

And that’s the thing- for as terrible as we were in all phases of the game yesterday had we even had 1 additional single drive where we stepped up, you give yourself a decent chance to go to overtime. Wasn’t in the cards. Just an absolute and complete egg we laid against an awful opponent.

Game was definitely not out of reach. The odds are you won’t come back and win but we had a chance with the onside kick. Think about how many times we were in the red zone and came away with no points. We played horrible and still could’ve easily won. At some point this year the defensive needs to get a take away. At this point I would be happy if we could get a sack

Sure, the offense we saw the week before could have pulled it off.

By the time that last kick occurred, I had lost confidence we could move the ball. Houser was uncharacteristically inaccurate all day.
