Purdue 73, Illinois 56 POSTGAME

My concern with Kofi and Giorgi is that BU will not play them at the same time. Would like to see Giorgi play some 4 this year to get a taste with adonis or Kane on the floor but BU appears reluctant for some reason. Wants them to stay out of Foul trouble, blah blah he just played kipper at the 5 for half a game. Could help in games where the other team is out rebounding us?? Get Giorgi in some smaller players for some different defensive looks???

Coaches are a very stubborn lot.

Not sure Grffin is uber athletic either, but just FYI, he is significantly more athletic than AJ. I've been to 2 games this year and during warmups Grffin routinely throws himself alley-oops and finishes well above the rim with ease. Would say he is one of our springiest players, maybe second only to Jones. I think he was a steal and excited to see how he develops.
And with FOUR years to develop, unlike AJ who has only had two. No knock on AJ, I think hes been a great upperclassmen the last two years and deserve a lot of credit for his hard work and setting an example for our young guys

Anybody still unsure of how well we are rebounding as a program, go back and listen to Painter's post game presser. You have to get old and stay old, and you have to be different, and you have to get your guys.. All else does not produce wins/championships/etc...well stated current affairs of the ILLINI program and our staff and direction we are headed.

Imagine if we had the same stale offense scheme with these players...any predictions where we would be? I would hazard a guess and not say doubling our in conference wins in year 2 and certainly not able to play or even contend somewhat with the 2/3 hardest schedule in the country.

It's remarkable when you really think about it. 2, sometimes 3 of our starters are in their first year here. We are competing in the best conference, and are in the middle of the pack. Imo this season has already been a bigger improvement than we could've realistically hoped for, and it's exciting we can still build on it.

The refs were fine. They've been the excuse by some every time we lose. That's a cop out. The execution on offense and the ability to neutralize their big guy for a full 40 minutes is what led to the outcome.
It’s not the sole reason nor at all the biggest, but it is a reason, that last 10 minutes was biased towards them with the fouls, it killed the momentum and importantly allowed them to rest right after they kept committing turnovers on offense. It was a factor along with what you also mentioned. I watched the game and felt the momentum shift as a fan with that allowing them to rest in a critical juncture. Same thing happened at Minny if I remember correctly

The refs were fine, it's really tiring to hear that excuse for every loss. Are Big 10 refs somewhat biased towards the home team? Sure. But we benefit from that when we're playing at SFC. Please call out the refs for favoring us at home if you're going to complain about games like this

I saw some calls that wrongly went our way down the stretch. Couldn’t capitalize though.

Great points juice! And as I've stated previously SEVEN new players on the team:
Ayo
Giorgi
Feliz
Tevian
Alan
Samba
Adonis

5 of the 7 new players are freshmen - we are still thin wrt bugs. Most wanted to see improvement and growth over last year. That has clearly happened. I believe we will be in much better shape next year at the 4-5 with kofi coming in and Giorgi with an extra year. Hopefully Samba puts on some weight and has a good summer. I think January red shirts if he's still here. Hopefully Higgs is still here. If we can somehow land Kofi' s teammate I'm not sure how we miss the dance next year. I think Ayo is here for at least one more year.

Fran agrees.....but seriously, the officiating has seemed to be very poor this year, especially as the season wears on. Maybe it's all of the constant changes in emphasis. Being a D1 ref has got to be a very tough job these days.

It does seem like every year there are one or two new calls that we’ve never seen before that dominate the way games are called. This year we have the hook and hold. Last year we had the “cylinder”. Of course the restricted area though I can’t remember when that started. The emphasis on every contact being possibly “flagrant” is annoying.

The ones that really irritate me though are the phantom ‘and one’ calls with little or no contact after ignoring the wrestling match that happened on previous plays.

The refs will never be perfect, but they were fine in yesterday's game imo. Edwards didn't get many "superstar" calls, there also weren't an abundance of ticky tack fouls. They called a goaltending on Purdont that clearly wasn't goaltending. We got to the 12 minute break in the 1st half before the 16 minute break. The fouls were about even for both teams, which is surprising considering the defense we play. The refs didn't sway the game one way or the other, our poop shooting is what really swayed the game. Let's complain about that and hope for some improvement instead of using the ref cop out.

This is my biggest issue with the officiating. I have seen a lot of games this year (not just Illinois games) where teams are allowed to play very physical for the first half, or 30 minutes of the game. Then, in the second half or last 10 minutes they decide to start calling every little touch foul. It makes it very tough on the players to adjust mid game and when you combine that with the home cooking that teams get, makes it that much harder and amplifies the advantage one team may be getting

Thinking of next year, Samba will have all summer to improve his game. He should be playing more for sure.
The rest of the guys will also have a summer to practice shooting, over and over and over. Try 15,000 like Groce ordered.
Practice screens, even double screens. Play two bigs at once, rotate Giorgi, Kofi, Samba. They will get plenty of rest.

Offense wastes so much energy, tired, short 3s off the front of the rim in 2nd half. Can't get open because it is
so predictible, sorry but it is. Haarms didn't even have to leave the bucket, and still stopped/altered mid range shots.
Need to draw him away, also cause him to foul to sit him.

Our defense sucked big time. Purdue had open layups all night long. No body within 10 feet of Haarms, so Harms dunk city.
What was having kipper, 6' 7" guarding Haarms, 7' 3" ??? Keep one of our big guys by the bucket at all times on defense.
Let the other guys guard outside tight. No need to go 30 feet from bucket, just opens middle for bunnies. Notice how
Purdue defended and it worked, few Illini bunnies, few layups etc.

Hopefully, next year will be better.

Curious as to why you think January will redshirt next year? Looks to be physically BIG ready.

Has anyone else noticed that some refs wait to see if a player (that certainly appears to have been fouled) makes or misses a shot under or near the basket before calling a foul.....in several games this year I've noticed that a player will miss a contested shot under the bucket and the ball is clearly off the rim, in a players hand and then the whistle is blown to indicate a foul.....maybe it's just me

I just think with Giorgi, Kofi and Samba, they may want to give him some extra time. I might not feel this way if he had been playing the last few months. I think this may contribute to class balance wrt bigs as well.

#14 team in the country, in their gym, and people are bashing our freshman-laden team for hanging with them for 30 minutes before getting hammered down the stretch. And if you followed the team reports, we seem to be struggling mentally to play 40 full minutes after a nice stretch of quality wins.

We lost, but that game was a big ask.

Whenever I see Tevian, I get the sense that if he can get more minutes and find the right balance of staying aggressive and staying patient on offense to let them game come to him, that he has dynamite potential--maybe even the highest ceiling on the team. His length and quickness really disrupts other teams on defense--he often causes turnovers without directly stealing the ball and seems to actually be open for ally-oop passes way more than other cutters on our team. He has a little Scottie Pippen to his game and will be great to see him develop--I really wish he could be 8 games further along in his development.

There was a play in this game where Purdue lost the ball so Tev took off on a fast break towards our end. The ball ended up being a scramble, so Tev ran back and got the ball. He then pushed it by himself and scored a contested layup. It was really impressive.

I wouldn't call them "fine", that goaltending call we got was ridiculously bad. I'll agree that they are an over-used excuse after every lose though.

I've watched random games between non-Illinois teams that I just think will be good games. Several have been ruined by poor, inconsistent ref-ing. NCAA needs to get the refs together.

Some refs seem to do that based on the severity of the foul or amount of disruption of the action - e.g. missed the shot so I'll call it, made it, so no harm. This also happens at times with out of bounds or strips. I think some refs will give the ball to the team that might have been fouled (but no call) when the defender may have 'slightly' fouled (bumped the player out of bounds, light hack across the arm). Offended coach complains, ref says "I could have called a foul"

And some refs like to watch to see if the ball goes in because that is their job. Otherwise you end up with situations like against Penn State where the ref assumes the ball went in but didn't see it because he was busy calling a blocking foul on someone's face.

I'd rather have whistles half a sec slow than half a sec fast.

I mean there's 3 officials on the floor...surely one of them could tell if the ball goes in the basket....a foul is a foul....don't wait to see what happens , especially on blocking fouls....shot goes in no harm....shot rims out all of a sudden we've got a blocking foul....give me a break....there are several reasons I'm losing interest in watching college basketball and this is one of them.....end of rant

I said it already, but we're in a position to potentially win 9 conference games. Even if we only take 1 game out of the next 3, going from 4(albeit a low bar) to 7 wins in a year in which the conference is very deep is respectable for year 2, especially considering how young we are. That is not to say going 0-3 or 1-3 to round out the season is acceptable, or that we don't have work to do. But it's worth keeping things in perspective.

Speaking of fouls, that foul call on Ayo giving Edwards three FTS was a doozy.

It seemed to me like BU was experimenting. At this point, do you show all your cards to try and get a win, or do you hold something in reserve for the BTT? Maybe you want to save something for Purdue in case you see them again. After the Penn State home loss, this game was probably irrelevant for any post season at this point - so start Feliz, give Tev and Alan some real minutes, mess with lineups, keep Trent out for a while, don't worry about getting the W. Doubt this was the thought process, but these considerations could have influenced the coaching decisions somewhat. Just a thought.
