If you have stars on your team, you want them taking shots late in the game. That is a just common sense.
Just watched the game. My thoughts:
1. TSJ and MM were hot garbage in the first half
2. No PG cost them this game in the first 5 minutes of play. I know they tied the game late, but they had no gas in the tank left after the comeback. Can't spot a team 11 points to start a game. Kill shot
2. Absolutely a foul on the last TSJ drive
3. We must be leading the nation in screwing up whatever play Brad calls after a timeout. Unbelievable how lost they were on that play
4. So tired of MM jacking up contested threes. Could have cost them the Michigan game. Definitely one of the reasons they lost today

Welll clearly BU disagrees because he is going to him. Also we don’t have a PG or anyone else that is close to as effective creating a shot so he s who BU goes to to do that more than anyone on the roster. TSJ is good at getting down hill off screens. As for barely over 30 percent unfortunately that’s the best we got and he can at least get a shot on his own. No one else can.
That Purdue crowd was convinced they were going to find a way to lose to us when Goode hit that final 3 with 6 seconds left.
That should tell you alot about how scary this team is.

You don't have to create your shot if you run the play. It's great to have the option of a Mayer step back at the end of the shot clock, but forcing when there's still 20 seconds left is not a good way to win games.
Mayer is a mixed bag, a willing but not particularly good shooter, and not a particularly good FT shooter. I have no problem with him taken 10 threes in a game...but I have a huge problem with him missing 9 of them. Much of that had to do with the fact that the team has only two willing shooters from the arc and most good teams have 4. Willing shooters are guys who do not hesitate to fire away when opportunity presents. But elite shooters know when they go 1 for 10, they should have found other ways to help the team because 10% for the night is exactly what opponents want to see. But not only is Mayer a willing shooter, he is 6'9, can jump, moves quickly with the ball, and has a relatively quick release. If he works hard at getting off his shot without "floating" he could become a solid pro...provided he can defend a pro. I like his game, but way too often he forces shots off the move and keeps moving which makes things really difficult.
Bottom line is we were fortunate to have him this season and I would love to have another who is a better FT shooter in the future.

He is one of the most frustrating players I've seen in the orange and blue. The guy has great skills - he has the talent to play in the NBA. But he is incredibly selfish on the court has low BB IQ.

I agree that he chucks up some shots that leave one wondering"WTF was THAT?", but we're fortunate to have both he and Shannon in Orange and Blue this year.

I think Mayer is actually a very GOOD shooter... when he isn't taking silly shots. His otherwise good shooting gets dragged down by his (at time) poor shot selection.
I am pretty sure we are talking about a different one. I watched the replay and Edey pushed Mayer with two hands on his drive to the basket. There was no basketball player involved. It was so bad even, that my wife, who doesn’t watch basketball was shocked that was a common foul
The only prediction I see that you made is double digit losses. By the end of this season, basically every team in a P5 conf except for maybe 8 or 10 teams will have double digit losses. You realize they play anywhere between 33-40 games, right? I also predicted that the sun would rise this morning.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Illinois clawed all the way back, but it couldn’t seal the deal in its regular-season season finale.
Illinois trailed by 24 points early in the second half, but Matthew Mayer tied it with 1:17 left. No. 5 Purdue then handled the game down the stretch, starting with a clutch bucket by Zach Edey, handing Illinois a 76-71 loss on Sunday.
The Illnii faced deficits of 13 with 11:26 left and 10 with 6:18 left. Each time they rallied. Then when the game was tied, Illinois had a turnover from Terrence Shannon Jr. and an airballed 3 by Mayer while the Boilermakers closed the deal at the free throw line.
The Illini got into their hole from the opening tip, with the Boilermakers scoring the game’s first 11 points. Purdue went on a 14-2 run with Edey on the bench and outscored Illinois 26-7 to end the first half with a 21-point lead.
Illinois had 11 first-half turnovers, five from Shannon. He struggled at point guard early, getting his pocket picked bringing the ball up multiple times by Purdue guard Brandon Newman. Illinois finished with 15 turnovers while Purdue had 23 points off those miscues.

Someone said to take a deep breath relax, BUT everyone should take a hard look at the schedule and realize there is a double digit loss season coming.

Eh, you were not specific in the post. I read it. You can just go to your post history if you'd like to reread it yourself. I wasn't saying anything other than that it wasn't really a bold prediction. I was just giving you a hard time since you seemed to be patting yourself on the back.

lurch has massively improved over 3 seasons, but the refs give him a lot of license in the lane. he's painfully slow and is frequently in the paint longer than 3 seconds. very tired of these bleepin' egregious calls/non-calls.

second half was fun to watch but....a loss is a loss. we have to pick up our intensity against every body all the time.

All season long there were about maybe four teams that looked like they were a cut above the pack. And lately that has come into question with the most recent floor results.
This makes for one exciting Season of Madness. There are some very good teams... but no Superteam. There’s a handful of teams at the top grouping level right now.... and then slightly below them is another big bunch of talented teams... and again another whole group just below them. But anybody could just about beat anybody else when the pressure gets turned up a notch. And as we’ve seen over the years... some teams seem to thrive on that additional pressure while others begin to fold.
The talent level of teams is leveling off each year with freshmen who leave and the effect of the Portal shuffling the deck from year to year. This makes for some extra exciting ball during the season... and then when the games get even bigger. Teams like Kansas and UCLA seem to be keeping their brand going... while others like Kentucky and Duke are feeling the slide.
That’s why ‘no expectations’ and ‘balls to the wall’ is great advice. The fan bases who go into this thing with big expectations are going to suffer the biggest disappointment because there is only one Big Trophy to go around. So there will be lots of tears from Coast to Coast.
