My son found these three tweets from the Rutgers faithful following the game:

1) We're not the worst! We're not the worst! We're not the worst!
2) Bring on 'Bama!
3) We should now get at least 2-3 first place votes in the AP Top 25 this week.

I was showing my Illini pride in New Jersey on Saturday picking apples--it is the Garden State, after all--and then this happens. :(

If I may be so bold as to ask, how old are you? Maybe an age range if you don't mind?

This kid thinks you can just sprinkle some dust on the talent we have and poof, we will be better. Succeeding in years 1 and 2 is possible if you have the talent already in the program. We are a SHELL of a power house team. We only have enough talent to be a middle of the road MAC team. How do you get better? With recruiting... and this is YEAR 1. SO YES, get back to me in 2 years with 3 recruiting classes. If there is no improvement by then... YOu have a legitimate concern. Until then, stop making yourself look like a fool.

P.S.... Who else in the nation is starting 12-15 TRUE freshman not out of rebuild but just because they are the best players on the team.... and not because they are beating out 4 and 5 star upper classmen

Speaking of which, man did we have some weird experiences w/ Rutgers fans on Saturday. We were tailgating in Grange Grove, just off the main walkway, and it certainly wasn't the most crowded pregame group. We had Illinois stuff everywhere. Anyway, on about 4 different occasions, we had Rugters fans very boldly walk up to our tent and ask for drinks. This wasn't just a visiting fan being friendly and engaging in some good-natured banter. This was full on like we were their bar and they wanted service. "I'll have a vodka orange juice please". It was very weird. At one point it felt there must have been a sign on our tent that said open bar.

We did ultimately give a couple drinks out, but by about the 4th request, we had to politely say no. What made this even more weird is that there couldn't have been more than 25 Rutgers fans in the entire Grange Grove area. At best I'd say maybe a 100 or so fans in the stands.

I guess the world has to balance....on to Minnesota Nice this week.

It will be interesting to see how many kids will be transferring out/leaving early.

I could see a handful of guys who aren’t Freshman leave pretty easily.

This upcoming class better be as good or better then last years cause we are gonna need them all.

I agree. I'm somewhat worried about who might transfer, especially considering the lack of talented depth that we have already. I hate to put names out there but if you're Mike Dudek, already graduated (no sit-out season), with potentially 2 years of eligibility left and NFL dreams, why would you stay at a school with no qb that can get you the ball?

Hate to be that guy, but from what I can tell, here's the list of 4th year players that could potentially be grad transfers. Allegretti, Dudek, Odenigbo, Watson, Roberts, McGrew, Hylton, McLaughlin, George, James. Would really hate to lose any of them but at the same time, could you really blame them? For the record, I think it's likely most would stay.

I've already accepted in my mind that we've got six more games to watch Dude K.

Dudek is either NFL ready or likely to transfer to a program that has a proven returning starter who he knows can get him the football in order to better showcase his skills for the NFL.

He may completely love his experiences at Illinois and choose to stay another year (or two, because if he petitions the NCAA for a 6th year, it would likely be granted).

If I were Dudek's father, I would transfer him out to Georgia, where next season they will have 5-star QBs 3-deep.

Same here. Been thinking that all season. My biggest worry is that you can really make the transfer case for any of those 4th year guys. How much would it set us back if Allegretti grad transferred? Losing your best OL from an already super young and thin unit. A player like Dudek or Allegretti would be a highly sought after plug and play 1 year starter at plenty of power programs.

Mack Brown announced one of our games early this season. I believe it was the USF game. He talked about how Illinois was very similar to North Carolina when he first took the job there and they did the same thing starting a bunch of very young guys. He went on about how it was just what Illinois needed to do even if we took our lumps now it would pay off in the long run. NC went 1-10 in each of his first two seasons followed by 6-4-1, 7-4, 9-3 and 10-3 in the next four. People just need to trust the process... changing coaches ever few years certainly hasn't been working for us.

We hired our new coach 20 months ago. The cupboard was bare after years of bad recruiting, bad publicity, and bad decisions by the athletic department.

Coach Smith has been through 1 recruiting cycle.

It's ok to be disappointed with a loss. I just don't understand why anyone would be angry at the current coach or current players for the situation this program is in.

don't you know... if we were rowing the boat we would be 20 - 0 only after 7 games this season!

Fans with the rose colored glasses saying get back to me in 2 years are part of the problem. You should be demanding they be better now, other coaches are succeeding in years 1 and 2. Nobody gets 4 bad years unless they coach here where the fans are ok with losing.

Only hope is he quits because that contract buyout is huge.

I absolutely agree with you guys on patience, but it's not just the kids that need it. Just listen to the call-in shows on WDWS and you'll hear a bunch of old folks calling in that want to fire Lovie already. The wacko comments from many of the callers make this board look like a Mensa meeting.

I listened to the post game show on my drive back home after the game and some of the calls were pretty ridiculous. A lot the callers are critical of Lovie's demeanor. They want him to yell and scream at the players as opposed to his stoic approach, which I don't necessarily agree with. You can see that players, especially the upper classmen, are given very short leashes and can have their playing time reduced to nothing rather quickly. One guy wanted us to fill the roster with Central Illinois kids who have "heart"? Another woman called in and said the Green punt return debacle happened because the ball hit an Illinois' player's leg  I didn't see that at all. Another caller was questioning why we didn't go for two when it was 28-16? I felt like screaming at the radio at that point and turned the show off. Does that person not understand that the downside to being down 12 points is MUCH BIGGER than the potential upside of being down 10 points?

This was a tough loss and there is no way around that. Rutgers came into the game with a 16 game conference losing streak, was averaging 11 PPG against FBS schools and started their 3rd string QB. They went on to score 35 points while our offense struggled to score points until late in the game.

Reading some of Lovie's comments at today's press conference add some clarity to what I saw on Saturday, however. I didn't realize that Watson, Phillips and Jones are all dealing with injuries. I was confused as to why we were seeing such a big shakeup with the LBs when a guy like Phillips was the 2nd leading tackler in the conference entering the game on Saturday. Watson and Jones have also been pretty solid against the run. If there are injuries, however, then they really have no choice but to go to the next guy on the depth chart. Not having Nelson out there also hurt a lot.

I can also understand why Corbin's playing time was limited due to a really costly penalty. That makes sense to me as that can be a learning experience for him. A lot of us are sick of the costly penalties.

Those who feel that some of us are Lovie apologists need to understand that we don't like the losing anymore than you do. However, you can't ignore the fact that there are only 76 scholarship players and 22 upperclassmen on this roster. We aren't bending over backwards to defend this staff. If they can't get this turned around by 2019 they should be gone.

Whether you are happy with this staff or not, they are building this program up the right way as opposed to handing out scholarships to JUCO players who may or may not help us right away. I'm not trying to be rude, but there are a number of JUCO players on this team (Phillips is not one of them) who are not B1G players.

If Lovie is not the answer then they are setting up the next staff with a nice foundation of players who will at least have experience and who appear to be pretty talented. They have at least done a good job of identifying talent.

For those of you who want us to be angrier, I don't know what to tell you? Attendance is very poor so it's not like they (Whitman and the coaches) aren't aware that the product on the field is not good enough for this fan base. If you want to put coaches on the chopping block after 20 months, who would want to come and coach here? Recruiting kids to come to this program is a tough sell right now given where this program is at and how lacking our facilities are. The instate kids are mostly ABI and we have to establish pipelines out of state in order to get Power 5 players to come here. Guys like Ward and Hayes-Stoker are doing that. Hopefully Nickerson can use his California connections to get more gems like Bennett Williams.

Thanks for proving my point with a really outstanding post :)

Great summary of some of the wackier comments on the radio. One of the most frustrating caller memes is that the problem is Lovie's sideline demeanor. Remember when Groce's problem was his manic sideline demeanor? :frustrated:

I guess it just doesn't occur to some people that coaches look a lot better when they have good, experienced players.

"When you play bad, you should feel bad." Lovie Smith sounds like my old man. Do better, you'll feel better. In the meantime, no participation trophies being handed out in the locker room.

Just to remind everyone what this program is up against...

In the 24 years from Mackovic leaving and Whitman and Smith arriving...

Illinois posted a 112-170-2 (.397) record. That's 97th/119 FBS teams, 60th/65 current P5 teams and 13th/14 current Big 10 teams.

10-14 (.417) vs. NW
7-12 (.368) vs. Minn
4-15-1 (.225) vs. Wisc
6-11 (.351) vs. Iowa
7-11 (.389) vs. Purdue
2-12 (.143) vs. Mich St.

We haven't reached some new depth. It's been 25 years of awful. I don't know whether Coach Smith is the answer. I'm pretty positive he was the best coach available to hire at the time Whitman got the job as A.D. I am quite confident that Whitman is the man for the A.D. job.

Sobering stats. It should be added that the right people can change that in time. If JW and Lovie are the right people and there's a good chance they are, in time and with patience we can put that futility behind us. There's is certainly no alternative.

It's sort of like losing weight after having been obese. It ain't gonna happen overnight, and it requires a lifestyle change to do it.

Competitive team, lower bowl game, progress.

My point was we should know this team is not ready now, maybe not even next year as we will still be young, but hopefully improved.

Exactly my point, these are some great expectations, to be competitive in year 4, can you set the bar any lower. Sad how far this program and the fans have fallen.
