Note that while this season does not count for eligibility, if a player chooses to stay the “extra” year we do not get to expand beyond 13 scholarships EXCEPT for this one time. So you should add 1 year of eligibility to everyone except for Trent and Da’Monte who would be exceptions if they stayed.
Question: Have they specifically said they will not expand roster limits beyond this year or have they just not addressed it so the old rule applies until they do? My guess all along has been they will have no choice but to expand it until this cycle of players have worked thru the system. Otherwise, “potentially” a full years worth of high school students could lose scholarships if everyone used their extra year. Obviously not all will, but we really have no idea the number until it plays out. That seems grossly unfair and I just can’t imagine the NCAA would stand up to the criticism.

My recollection is that they have explicitly stated that roster limits will not be expanded after this year.

That would royally screw the high school class of '22 as a one time hit. Any college player taking their extra year in '22-'23 would mean one less recruit signing. After '22-'23 things should balance out again as guys starting their extra year should roughly equal guys ending their extra year.

Thanks for taking over. Was there any post about what happened with rbachhuber?

Requests:
1) List the players official position with their first mention in the grid. e.g. Kofi Cockburn (C). I can never remember the positions of the new recruits.
2) Show a players full eligibility - i.e. the extra year from covid directly. Other than DMW and TF, they do take scholarship slots.

I liked seeing the recruits list. I guess I can learn to click a link. I'm not that old yet.

I suspect that the best way to get a clean image is to have the spreadsheet set up to be the same dimensions that you want to see in the post. i.e. scale the window with the spreadsheet until they match. Btw. The first grid you posted looks reasonably clear to me. The second one is really blurry.

Word has it he entered the transfer portal and was immediately snatched up by another school's fan message board.
Meh. We gave him (thread) starter minutes. He a need better handle. (Too hard to spell) Not enough length (on his posts). We only want guys who want to be here. (Unless he’s an insider). He didn’t really fit the system. (Not enough Larry Bird references) I can’t recall a single bad pun assist so he clearly wasn’t a team player.

I’m KIDDING of course!
Hope you come back someday rbachuber. You were a valued member of IL.

Sad update (We'll miss you Giorgi, good luck!)

Link to grid with recruiting offers. I added positions to the first cell that the player/recruit shows up in and I added a "+1" to the end of each players final original scholarship year to denote that they are eligible for an extra year of eligibility should they choose to take it. It's going to be such a case by case basis I think it would be misleading to show each player taking their extra year. This way we can at least see who is eligible to take it without assuming one way or another for everyone.

I was wondering myself. Dan posted this is the Hoops recruiting thread.

rbachhuber has decided to move on from the forum. Special thanks to rbachhuber for posting & maintaining the scholarship grid over the years.
For now anyone is free to post an updated scholarship grid here in the recruiting thread. Go Illini

I’m not saying you’re wrong, but Hendrickson was on with Werner and believes there will be expanded scholarship limits for schools that can afford it. Great interview discussing the portal in depth and what it means going forward. That discussion is later in the podcast.

Thanks, BMore! I think you are crazy for taking it on but thank you for being crazy enough to do this. I hope wherever rbachhuber went they appreciate his skills and abiding insanity as a fan.

As an added note I cannot think of any way to account for the COVID year eligibility rules in a consistent logical manner as is required by a spreadsheet because it is trying to reflect an inconsistent and illogical NCAA.

Any chance of adding G/F/C to the recruits grid as well? If it is too much work to go back and add it for the existing recruits, what about for any new additions?

A good idea.

So, does this mean if Adam Miller comes back we will have no open scholarships this year and next year unless/until someone leaves?
yes

In fact, if everyone comes back next year (which of course won't happen), we're oversigned by two right now.

I don't think that is right. I think if Ayo stays in the draft and Kofi, Adam and the super seniors come back, we are good. If Ayo comes back, well, then we would be over by 1.

Thanks for this. I think I (finally) get it. If Miller returns, he fits into scholarship #13. Otherwise, we have a slot for a backup PG/combo guard (IMO Plummer is the most intriguing, extending the PR-pipeline). Sure looks like Trent wants to come back and he automatically slots in as PG #2 behind or alongside Curbelo. Damonte as well can return and take advantage of his extra COVID year allowing us 15 scholarship players. That still leaves decisions for the bigs, with Kofi the key domino. His choice impacts the decisions of Lieb, Hamlin and possibly BBV.

Sorry if I'm reiterating what everyone already knows. The only lock I think is Ayo stays in the draft. If I was a betting man, Kofi declares again but keeps open his option to return. And works on a 10-12 foot face-up jumper and his free throw shooting.

Was Hutch granted a medical redshirt this year? If so, he should have an extra year, right (on top of the +1 covid year)? Or am I mistaken?

I do believe everyone was granted an extra year on their scholarships regardless if they were a Fr, So, Jr or Sr.

I think it is either or. He had two years left at the beginning of the season just ended, and he has two years left now. He does not get a third year by stacking COVID and medical passes.

Correct. One way to think of it is last year didn’t count against eligibility instead of thinking of it as an extra year the players get.

If I remember correctly the NCAA did this because they didn’t want players to opt out of the season because they were concerned about ‘wasting’ a year of their eligibility. The NCAA likely wouldn’t have survived financially without this years tournament so they were trying to incentivize the players to play.

So, all of the players should still have the same eligibility they had at the beginning of last season.
