Self: Is this something or nothing?

They are coming off a National Championship and have 4 of the Top 60 players coming in next season. If there was ever an opportune time to self-impose some sanctions, this would be it. They are one of the teams that will always be able to pull elite talent from the portal, if necessary. (Though a post-season ban might temporarily put a damper on that)

The people I talk to all are saying it's something ... Townsend is in more trouble than Self (big surprise there)

I also talked to Bill when he came this summer with Kruger and I won't say what we discussed but he kinda gave me the hint that something was probably coming ...
I guess the main question is whether he is going to lose job or just get a slap on the wrist. I vote second.

One question I have. It seems like most of the big ten schools have a deep alumni base that has a lot of money. Does Kansas? Oklahoma? I'm assuming that Kentucky has a fan base that would sell their own bodily organs for a five star recruit, but I guess I don't perceive that to be the case with Kansas. I could very well be wrong.

I also wonder just based on pure numbers if Duke will be able to compete as well. They just don't have as many alumni.

Duke has been bringing in multiple 5 stars each class for decades, in large part because of their boosters. Whether it's a few passionate, wealthy boosters or a large alumni base that's developed a good network, I don't see how that would change.

Duke may not have the largest alumni base, but they have some extremely wealthy alumni. Here's just a partial list from their website:

Highlights inlude Tim Cook, Melinda Gates, and Adam Silver.

I think they'll be ok.

While their alumni base is smaller Duke benefits from the fact that a lot of their student body come from wealthier families and go on to make more after graduation than many other colleges. Just some quick investigation puts them in the top 20 nationally for alumni earnings on average. So they are passionate and have more money to spend on average.

Throw the book at him. I'm still holding a grudge from 2003. Not healthy I know but I can't let it go.

Your grudge should be against Gunther and the AD administration at the time for offering him a ridiculous below-market-value contract. The contract we gave him was an insult to him and the value he brought in. Of course he was going to leave as soon as the opportunity to get a real deal presented itself, particularly given that his dream school offered him. If we had the current administration at that time, we at least could have stood a fighting chance.

Nobody gets fired for cheating anymore- just losing. See Will Wade and Sean Miller last seasons

Rick Pittino at Lousville is only one. He embarassed university 3X

1. strippers/hookers for recruits
2. FBI blackmail from assistant coach wife having sex at restaurant
3. FBI wire tap paying recruits

I'll predict similar to UNC (2005) --- absolutely nothing.

In their defense the wiretap discussed a player who went to Duke (presumably outbid) and nothing happened to them. And of the two players in question one never played in a game and the other already served an NCAA issued suspension. I'm not sure how that translates into more than a slap on the wrist.

It is so hard to take the NCAA seriously when they still have not resolved a situation that occurred 5 years ago. Self will be retired and sitting on a beach in the Caribbean before this is resolved.
If Self was still at Illinois, it would be something and would have already been resolved. Any banners hung by the Illini would be removed from the rafters and wins vacated, post season bans, TV bans, scholarship reductions, you name it.

Would they let us hang them in the library, like they do at "good" schools?

I wouldn't say Will Wade have had bad seasons the last few ones. The last one wasn't great but still got them a postseason ticket. I am pretty certain the termination is due to the violation. Of course, he was at LSU, which is not KU.

Sean Miller, at the other hand, did not have very good seasons the last three ones. Obviously the violation was affecting his team so yeah it was about time for UA to go a different direction.

As far as KU goes, the championship from last season was an evidence that the violation did not affect Self's coaching/recruiting much. That is why I don't think KU will can him unless something surfaces which starts to show an effect.

FBI wiretap showed how Nike and Adiddas were funneling money to recruits (a long with boosters) to attend blue bloods like Duke, UNC, Kansas, Kentucky. I believe only the bluebloods were paying big bucks to recruits.

Now in 2022 I think we saw the effect of NIL coop/alums legally help pay players which helped level the playing field. JMO but other than Duke 2022 was not dominated by blue bloods.

He had already accepted the Arkansas job before Guenther talked him into staying in 2002. He had one foot out the door when he arrived. He needed Illinois to put on his resume so he could jump to a school with more cachet and a less restrictive AD. He never planned on KU coming available as soon as it did. Guenther could have offered him twice what KU did and Self would have still left.

I find this myth ridiculous. Arkansas isn’t some Blue Blood, lol, and it’s not a better job than Illinois. We were underpaying him BADLY, and he was either going to get an appropriate raise or go somewhere he would be paid fairly. If Whitman’s checkbook were out, this place would have had as much “cache” as anywhere else.
