Self: Is this something or nothing?

I find this myth ridiculous. Arkansas isn’t some Blue Blood, lol, and it’s not a better job than Illinois. We were underpaying him BADLY, and he was either going to get an appropriate raise or go somewhere he would be paid fairly. If Whitman’s checkbook were out, this place would have had as much “cache” as anywhere else.
I'm not sure what the myth is. It's pretty much a point that can't be proven or disproven. I'm of the opinion that there never was a chance to keep Self if KU came calling. He clearly likes to play a bit looser than our admin would agree to. Plus, it's going back home. I think IU would have an extra draw for example, for a coach from the midwest. You actually don't have to look much further than the Self hiring itself. Kansas couldn't offer Roy Williams enough money to stay because of the draw of his alma mater. No Self wasn't a KU guy, but he did coach there and he did play in that conference.

Guenther made plenty of poor decisions. Hiring Lou Tepper when Mackovic had set us up for a good hire was first, second, and third on that list. But failing to keep Self wasn't on him because I don't think anything would have kept him.

FTR, I’m not necessarily saying Self wouldn’t have left for KU in all scenarios; he did, after all, say it was the only job he’d leave Illinois for. And if we ponied up the money, I believe him.

In other words, I do not think Self saw a plethora of programs as inherently “cooler” destinations than Illinois (much less Arkansas), which I felt that poster insinuated.

What a joke. But, being KU, the school will probably get away with little more than the wrist slap.

Like any Coach, only Self really knows how and why he leaves or takes a job. That’s all on him. Public statements they make are made for various purposes and may not carry much useful weight.

The better emphasis with regard to Coaching is on building an ‘Elite’ institutional basketball program that coaches and players are lusting to be a part of. Something bigger and better than any one person.

And then... any Coaches that leave your program for another? You wish them well... and then work to trounce them soundly on the basketball court (and then graciously shaking their hands with a smile after the sacking).

As we all know... there are rules for the majority of the major college programs and then there are other rules for the Blue Bloods. Can’t interfere too much with the big name programs that bring in the big TV ratings and the resulting big money pool that backs these programs of privilege and the advertisers that salivate for the big audiences.

Make your own house a place that provides growth and success and a winning tradition by doing this the RIGHT WAY.

A clear opportunity for the NCAA to show some leadership.
I do not expect any, however.
Assume that KU gets away with their self imposed slap.

Guenther didn’t hire Tepper.. Chancellor Morton Weir did. Weir then hired Guenther in what was obviously a decision order that was backwards.

Mackovic was both head coach and Athletic Director when he left for Texas, leaving Illinois in a bind at two key positions. Weir pulled the trigger on Tepper first, thus denying Guenther his first official hire. And that’s why I’ve always believed the downfall of Illinois football post-Mike White was when Mackovic was named AD to replace the scandal-plagued Neale Stoner.

I don't know if I can 'like' this hard enough. Didn't even do a search, just elevated Tepper. Peter Principle.

And yes specifically this is on the whole administration more than just RG.

I was over the outrage several years ago, when it was clear the NCAA would do nothing if at all possible. It was a joke back then, and it's only worse in my view. They still have the rights to the basketball tournament revenue, and jurisdiction over non-revenue sports that can't fight back like football and basketball programs. Still, I'm glad to see the athletes, conferences, and individual programs have more power now.
