I wondered what in the hell Matheny was thinking taking Lackey out in the 8th, especially after he got 1 pitch 1 out. But it worked out. Maddon did the opposite with Lester and he gives up a home run and a walk that leads to another run. Awesome stuff. Great win.

Saw a stat that the Cards are 8-0 when they win the first game of the NLDS and the Cubs are 0-11 when losing the first game of the NLDS. I would love to win today, then show everyone that Arrietta is human and rock him in Wrigley.

I was irate when Matheny took lackey out for Siegrist. I just remember 2013 where Siegrist was shaky, but he learned. Matheny really turned a corner this year, and I think some of that is in credit to David bell.

Also, do you guys like the pitch tracker? Personally, I think it's really annoying. It's fun looking at the pitches live and deciding if you should get pissed at the ump. Plus, it looked off last night. A lot of balls looked a lot closer to the strikezone than the tracker showed.

The TBS tracker is way off IMO.

Siegrist was awesome. Rosey scared the hell out of me, per usual. Lol.

Moss starting today. Is Matheny out-thinking himself?

Here is the history for tonight's starters against each team. Not much in the way of sample sizes.

Yeah i thought there tracker was off. Also, the camera angle the national telecast uses makes it tougher to see balls and strikes compared to FSN Midwest.

I like having Jaime going tonight. He hasnt started against the Cubs since 2012 so i would think that Castro is the only one with significant at bats against him. With his movement on pitches it will be tough for the cubs.

The PitchTrax is just a guide, I never use it as a exact strike zone especially for an individual umpire, you will be set up for dissappointment. When a pitcher is hitting spots all night, especially on the corners, the pitcher will get afforded calls that further expand outside or in. How do you think Maddux and the rest of the Braves pitchers made a living in the 90's? The ump sees it on the black all night, so when the pitch is scooted out sometimes less than inch then an inch and more they assume strike.

Take the PitchTrax box away and those pitches that are called strikes on both sides and you wouldn't even question it.

Had a facebook friend who is a cubs fan post the strike zones for last night and he was complaining about the calls the cards were getting. I didnt engage him, but all I could think was 2 things, 1: yadi presents the ball better and always gets more strikes called that way, so get a better catcher, and 2: lester threw a few wild pitches whereas lackey was hitting his spots all night. Of course one was going to get more calls than the other.

Well if he was using PitchTrax, he has no idea what he is trying to prove. And you are right, when you are fine with you pitches all night, you are bound to get more calls when you drift further from the plate. PitchTrax is not absolute!

Actually, the zone was called the same for both pitchers all night. The narrative that Lackey got more calls than Lester is just not true. There was one pitch the entire night that the Cubs had a legitimate gripe about, the pitch up and away to a LHB.

Can accept (with difficulty) the Cards getting beat, but beating themselves kills me.

"He is really just a two pitch pitcher, his change up goes two directions". I thought it was just 1 direction. Come you know I wasn't only one thinking it.

What ever happened to go with pitches? And seriously we are constantly behind in the count with balls being called strikes. Can we get those too?
