The rollicking and boat-rocking of the past week was over. The tide had turned. The Cardinals navigated seemingly everything with simultaneous grace and grit — from pulling off trades to pulling out of trades; from players gripping onto new opportunities to infielders ripping homers. After two series sweeps — three games against the rival Cubs, three against the storied Yankees — the Cardinals were in first place and in a better place. Here’s thinking this month could be one of the best in years. The Cards are 6-0 in August. They have 22 remaining games this month — six are against winning teams. But what’s stood out this past week was the enrichment. The enrichment of confidence in players the team didn’t give up in trades. The enrichment of players the team didn’t give up on. And the enrichment that came from sweeping the team with the best record in baseball. “Sweeping a good team like that at home is something to prove to ourselves that we’re also in that in that upper echelon,” said Cardinals outfielder Lars Nootbaar, who was 6 for 19 on the homestand with a pair of spellbinding catches. “I think we just proved that at any moment in the season, anytime, we can beat anybody. So I think, pretty good indication of where the team is headed.” -------------------------------------------------------- Benjamin Hochman is my favorite reporter for the STLtoday.....................He combines wit ( sometimes corny as heck ) with a certain flair that usually is right on track with the Cardinals fortunes.......
