Sell. They are not really contenders if they are merely struggling to get the last WS slot.
I tend to agree with that, but should they be in contention and they do sell, people will be screaming. Screaming how they don't spend, but yet fans still don't go get an affordable ticket(they exist) and bring their own sandwich and water inside the stadium.
I like the the lineup, is it good enough for 162, I don't know, but what I do know is we need arms.

I look at it like this. If there are members of our current roster that are going to be core members of the team moving forward, it would be beneficial to have playoff experience. If we are in the hunt for a playoff spot, that probably means that Arenado, Gray, and Contreras had seasons similar to their career average. I know two of those guys said they want to stay, but if there was some significant interest in their services on one of the top contending teams, I'm sure that interest would extend into the offseason, so I wouldn't sell.

Now, my definition of being in the hunt means that we are comfortably in the playoffs if the season ended on July 31st. If we are waiting on a 12 game win streak to get us to leapfrog 3 teams in the wildcard chase, that is not "in the hunt" by my book and the calculus changes to trying to trade Arenado, Fedde, and Helsley.

Our future is more important than a low chance possibility of a playoff push this year, and the more assets we can get from others minor league systems while we try to rebuild ours shortens our window of mediocrity.

Your definition is not the scenario RyIllini posed to us. He said
Question for you guys.
What would you want the front office to do should our Cards be in contention come the trade deadline. Say we are still hovering around .500 and within a few games of the last spot or even have the last spot.
His question amounts to backing in at the last moment. Being around.500 is not a contending team.
If, as you propose they are comfortably in the playoffs they are probably winning the division and are 10-15 games over .500.That's not a team that looks to sell at the deadline.

No matter what the FO does, fans will scream. As I mentioned in another post, a true contending team is not going to be looking to sell. Your post was about a team floating along somewhere around .500. That's a pretender not a contender.

Yep, in that scenario I would definitely sell. And you are right wpr, fans will scream no matter what. As a FO, you just have to tune out your fan base and do what's best for the franchise long term. I am guessing that the payroll won't increase much from where it is currently, so we have to have young home grown talent to make the future work.

Over use doesn't help either when your starter can't or won't be let to go more than 6 innings

Saggese optioned to Memphis. Jose Barrero called up.

Move was made to get some at bats for Saggese as he wasn't going to be seeing much playing time upcoming and it's better to get him some ABs in Memphis than ride the pine with the major league club.

Walker makes another outstanding play in the outfield. Perfect strike to Contreras to double up Dunn. Who would have thought his offense would lag behind his defense when he first made the club?

It is wonderful that he has become a competent defender. The question remains. Can he hit major league pitching?

why would we think this team would be in a pennant race? and lets say for argument we were the last team in the playoffs,
if we didn't buy pitching at the deadline, we are in no position to contend with any top ten team in baseball.

i just want to see some of Crooks, Graceffo, Wetherolt, Mathews, Saggese, and Bernal up this September. Maybe even a
healthy Tink Hence!

I'm not sure we will be, but it's too early to tell. You can't win a division in April, but you can lose one. Just got to stay close to .500. If you look at last year's team, they lost a playoff spot in the first month. I am going to give it some more time before I declare we aren't in a penant race. I think we will know for sure by end of June whether they are contenders or pretenders. If I had to bet, I wouldn't put money on them at this point.

I kind of find it interesting that for the first time, I'm seeing Cardinals TV ads in my home area. In all of my years of Cardinal fandom living outside of the St. Louis Metro area, I've never seen TV ads for the team.

I have to think this is an effort to attract interest for more ticket sales. Guess that's what happens when you don't want to invest in a winning team.

If they could figure out how to win on the road or schedule all games at Busch III, it would help a lot. 8 game difference between home and away wins. Strangely, the Dodgers and Padres have a similar split.

More terrible balls and strikes calls today. And then they overrule a clear stolen base on replay.
