Talen Horton-Tucker commits to Iowa State

#326
Why does anything need to be reconciled? THT's mom says that Illinois did NOT pull the scholarship offer. That means he could have chosen Illinois, he could have chosen Xavier, he could have chosen Iowa State, or he could have chosen to consider other offers.

He chose Iowa State over the other offers.

Why? I don't know and I don't care. It was his choice. He could choose for any reason at all. It might be a good reason, and it might be a bad reason, but he does not owe anyone an explanation. It was his choice.
you are right....MIF tweets dont "need" to be reconciled, and we dont need to question THT's decision.

On side note,...I'm not a MIF AAU fan and surely don't think much of the cryptic tweets.

Yup. I'm still open to hearing a different, truthful account of the mess, but I can see my path forward if the worst is what happened. This incident has crystallized several opinions I hardly knew I had.

Basketball scholarships at the University of Illinois are, first and foremost, there to advance the careers and lives of the best amateur basketball players in Illinois. In the interest of keeping the team competitive, the head coach should get a fair amount of say in which players get offers. The scholarships, though, do not belong to him. Or the press. Or an AAU coach. They belong to the kids in our high schools.

The system does not reflect this, but neither do its operators or our expectations. Basketball is broken. I hope my alma mater has the guts to break away and be a leader in fixing it.

Good luck to Talen Horton-Tucker and his family.

College football and badketball have been broken for years. IMO when the coaches are paid more than the University presidents, something's broken.

All parties involved have decided to take the high road and move on: THT and family, Ayo and family, MIF/coaches, Simeon/coaches, Illini/AD/coaches. Nobody is pointing fingers.

The only ones who have been left behind whining are some Illini fans on message boards and some local media covering the Illini, trying to assign blame to different parties.

Take a cue people... from all parties that were actually involved!

George Conditt and his dad did not take the high road

George Conditt and his son are totally irrelevant in this situation, but if it makes you feel better, you can stay back with George Conditt and his son.

This is what seems fairly obvious: Illinois and THT were both slow playing each other while pursuing other options, MSU, Nolley, the Finnish guy, etc. Eventually each party's options narrowed, Illinois' more than THT's. Illinois got Ayo's commitment, and decided to go for the home run of getting the top 2 Chicago players, and put the hard sell on THT at his official visit, while conveniently forgetting the bad blood between them or believing they could fix it. As they had wanted to, they did a great job selling THT at the official visit. He set an announcement date of a few days later, which is common, and planned to commit to Illinois.

It is ridiculous to suggest that the offer was no longer open because he waited four days after his official visit to commit. If he had committed earlier it would have been worse. Again, he did what the staff wanted him to do. They belatedly realized or were informed on the day he planned to announce his commitment that Ayo and THT would not play for the same team in college. It is Illinois's prerogative to choose Ayo over THT, but they have to live with the fallout from doing so at the last minute.

Nothing would've changed for THT had we said Monday we had to pass, assuming that indeed happened. He had the same options either way.

What I've learned from this ordeal:

Fans and the media (our media, created by demand) are waaaay too wrapped up in recruiting. This ain't healthy.

More specifically they're way too wrapped up in finding fault and assigning blame.........it's the dark side, Luke.

University presidents and admin. in general are hugely overpaid as it is. Basketball pays for itself and then some for us. AAU, handlers, hangers-on and shoe companies are the problem, not coaches' salaries, imo.

Mom speaks. A bunch of media and internet insiders look foolish.

Seems clear, THT wanted ISU and we should wish him luck.

Just saw this article posted by the Tribune (Shannon Ryan) titled "Irvin family denies it affected Illinois' recruitment of Talen Horton-Tucker".

The last 3 paragraphs caught my attention:

The Fire's statement responded: "Talen left (the team) in the spring and that ended our involvement with his recruitment. We found that part (about the Fire's involvement) to be comical that we could tell any Big Ten school who they can offer to or can't. We don't have that power.

"While the Mac Irvin Fire basketball program and members of the Irvin family do have (a) relationship with the University of Illinois basketball staff, it is in no way EXCLUSIVE. ... These kids jump around programs a lot. To think we would do anything of ill will to a kid's future, it's disappointing."

Palmer said the Irvins demand retractions and apologies from the Sun-Times and Defender and are "in the process of obtaining legal counsel" on the matter.

It will be interesting to see where this goes and if O'Brien (Sun Times) is forced to formally apologize.

Having moved on , looking for the next recruits, I can only wonder what exactly Talen meant after he left MIF. His tweets said that he and Ayo would probably not play on same team after high school. Looks like he knew all the time. That loyalty thing did come in to play.:(

And just when things couldn't get any wackier - the Irvins and MIF are seeking legal counsel to potentially sue the Suntimes and Defender for the articles regarding THT. Sorry don't know how to post the link to story, but it puts us squarely in the middle of this mess again. Please just let it stop.

I don't really see how this is bad for us. We aren't being sued and it is specifically calling out the outlet with the most damning story.

Everyone takes the high road except O'Brien and Tupper. And our innocent and classy boy THT retweets the other O'Brien article on his commitment (which said THT "takes the high road") where people can see and click the link into another report :)
think we were all ready to move on...now MIF may drag this out. Potentially forcing affidavits from "camp" including family members on their discussions with illini coaching staff.

I personally believe that we didn't pull the offer, and am believing now that MIF didn't do much except maybe warn our staff of the family feud.

all that said, If a coach says to a family " if you pick us, we may lose our #1 recruit and please think about that" (speculation, but conceivable)....I can see how that could deliver the result we got on Thursday.

Hope the law suit discussion dies. I dont see any good to come out, except some lawyers able to book hours and get paid.

Underwood sure does have your attention :D

He isn't green to any of this. Absolutely comical to think otherwise. There was no mistake made by this staff. It may be year 1 at Illinois, but people shouldn't forget it'll be BU's 12th year coaching high level ball in the state, and year 22 in the Midwest. He's Seen. It. All...He knows so much more about it than you or me. He witnessed all garbage. He also saw Billy boy do his thing.

Somehow, if Brad didn't do any of his Chicago homework, Chin was there to consult just in case. Winning still transcends all of this.

Trolls everywhere. Schiller wasn't pulled. THT picked ISU. Media made baseless accusations and rumor mongered. It's the way the US govt works so they wanted in on the action.

It's best if we all move on and don't feed the trolls

My guess is that this article will be both the first and last media mention of the Irvins suing the SunTimes.

But but, it's Halloween season, aren't you supposed to feed to the trolls at least for a couple more days? :D

Who's to say we didn't openly make THT a conditional offer saying that if we could get Ayo and family on board we'd love to have him. We thought we had everyone in a row, then we didn't, so we went back and told him that we tried but couldn't make it work. THT very disappointed, we're disappointed, Ayo's family low keys their role, Irvin's unfairly take the heat.
Yea, I was thinking that since none of us really know 75% of the truth, it's also possible that the coaches went back to THT and asked him to delay his announcement so they could keep trying to make the peace, but THT decided to just go to ISU and avoid all of the drama. I could see, in this scenario, the misinterpretation that asking THT to delay was 'pulling his schollie' when that really wasn't the whole truth.

The above is as plausible as any of the negative stuff out there, and it would indicate no one is to blame, really, except maybe the stubborn adults. Anyhow, I'm tired of the negativity given how little we actually know of the truth. I'll choose the potential for the above and stay positive about the whole thing. Obviously, it's not ideal...but at least it's also not the shady mess others are making it out to be.

I think this is plausible, and based on THTs family we didn't officially rescind the scholarship offer. The offer could have been " taken off the the table" (I think that was o'briens wording), verbally...with a request to THTs family to wait. Give more time to work out family differences. THT said in his post selection comments that he and Ayo "could have done something" at Illinois...I think he wanted to come to Illinois.

Since Thursday was a verbal, anyone think its possible that Dosunmu family could reconsider and support THT coming...and THT ultimately sends his NLI to Illinois in the end?
