Until evidence is presented that states otherwise, I consider TSJ to be innocent. I have a hard time believing this kid would have to force himself on anyone or would want to. Feels like a setup to me.
These kids are worth $$$ now so it's not out of the realm of possibility. Terrance Shannon has to be in the the top 1% of NCAA Basketball net worth/net income.

There are plenty of celebrities and professional athletes who have prospective partners sign waivers of consent prior to getting it on just for reasons like this.

I swear this program is cursed.

After reading that statement today the AD and the staff were aware of this incident from September and they must have done some investigating felt TSJ was falsely accused, charges wouldn't be filed thus he was allowed to play. I just don't believe TSJ did this and there is a lot more going on than we realize. I wonder when the cops were called to file a reporting? The time frame and TSJ being allowed to come back home just all seems odd.I do hope justice is served. I just don't see how if there were physical bruises or forced sex how an arrest would take 4 months to be issued. There has to be a lot of other things going on here. Its sad.

Legal question: Is 3 month investigation and turnaround time on par with normal investigations of a public figure? One of my friends unfortunately went through this process as a victim and her case took a lot longer to develop.

Obviously I hope the best for both parties, and I know TSJ’s life and reputation is way more important than college basketball but selfishly is there any hope that TSJ suits up again in the O&B?

What kind of "investigation" could the AD and staff perform beyond asking TSJ, and perhaps any teammates who were at the site where the alleged attack took place, if he did it? Certainly, the victim and police wouldn't be talking to them.

The fact that this made it to national news and TJS was already "lawyered up" and ready to take this to trial, leads me to believe that a quick plea bargain went bye bye a while back.
Plea bargains can happen as quickly as both sides agree to one. Lawyering up is the best, not the worst, way to reach that result. No prosecutor is going to plea bargain away a rape charge to a pro se defendant.

Just how comfortable is the prosecutor with her case, given the 3+ month delay in filing? At this point all of any of can do is guess.

Highly doubtful unless the charges are dropped.

If you google the DA's name, her back story on why she ran, and won, is an interesting one. (I am not commenting, at all, on whether her stance is right or wrong.)
But the criminal complaint is signed by an Assistant DA, not by the DA that is the subject of so much controversy in Lawrence.

It is interesting, though.

The delusion of college athletics as a bastion of possibility, of good versus evil, and of growth, is absolutely shattered when a young men (let's face it, the abusers are men) with seemingly superhuman skills give in to the causes and conditions and inflict a lot of harm.

The bastion of possibility is still there. But it has been raised to play itself out at the higher level of serious real life and not left to the temporary fortunes found on courts and fields of sports competition.

In my prior post I outlined the joys and sorrows of our all being flawed human beings. And your point is well taken that... on top of these young people being such humans... they are additionally subject to all kinds of temptations and pressures even beyond all those that any person must already deal with every moment. And as others have rightly point out, they can be victims of their fame by those who seek fame and fortune for themselves through harmful and hurtful methods and trying to exploit a target that can be easily brought down and not so easily raised back up in terms of reputation and potential future damage to themselves.

Who is counseling these young people? Who is helping to guide them through the minefields of living in the bright spotlight and now with lots of money on the line and living one’s life in the glare of media scrutiny? And unprecedented social (and family) pressure?

One would hope that each athlete has a strong and positive family structure and friends who are true supporters and not lurking vultures. Or maybe a spiritual influence in their life or strong mentors wherever found. But we know that such is not always the case. And perhaps having such a strong foundation in contentious times like these today is the exception and not the norm.

Being in college athletics is both a blessing and a curse. It can bring great riches and it can bring great harm and disruption back upon you. It all was not so complicated in years past when everything moved at a slower and less scrutinized pace. Young people could be young people first and everything else second. But college athletics today makes one a star... and an influencer... and a hero... and a villain... and a target... all at once. All while still being in many ways a kid.

Regardless, there is going to be a major lesson to this Shannon story. Either it will be a sad tale of a step gone wrong by an athlete... or it will be a sad tale of a step gone wrong by someone trying to ruin another person’s life. Or a mix of both.

And suddenly, the lives of countless people have been permanently changed in the flash of a moment.

You're the third or fourth person to bring this up. The charges were filed by Jennifer Tatum, the Chief Assistant District Attorney, NOT the DA you're talking about. Probably worth noting before you go too far down that rabbit hole.

I've been hoping to see a post from one of our insiders saying how Brad/the university share the same belief as TSJ and his lawyer that he's innocent..

But Indy lville mad 0440 have all posted without saying anything of the sort.

Hope it's due to a lack of information to this point and not conflicting beliefs
Even if they know they can't say anything. Be real.

When there is a criminal investigation going on, I don't think that an employer/university would conduct a concurrent investigation without the express permission of the police. That said, an accused person can retain a lawyer and the lawyer can investigate on behalf of the accused person.

I just want to throw out there that it really isn’t morally questionable or “victim shaming” for Illini fans (or others who somehow “know” TSJ) to have TSJ’s back 100% at this moment. If your brother got charged with this and maintained his innocence, you’d have faith in him until you had reason to doubt him, without necessarily having anything to say about the alleged victim’s character either. And in at least some sense, Shannon is a member of our Illini family.

Obviously, if more damning evidence comes to light, this goes out the window. But fully supporting him now is morally defensible and even more understandable for all of us to do. Doesn’t mean you HAVE to “take his side” at this stage, of course … needless to say, this is a tragic situation and a complicated issue. But there’s a very coherent argument that the “default” is to trust him until more facts come out. And I think at this point that’s where I am. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Agree , could not say it more precisely.

I think there are more resources available than that. Plus, TSJ has an attorney that is likely somewhat informed. They even said they were not aware of any actionable offenses. Also, if TSJ is innocent he is the victim by being falsely accused but if not then I don't feel sorry for him. I just don't think JW and BU would have kept him on the team if they felt there was a chance he was guilty. Maybe I'm wrong.

Most people are going to agree with you. My take is not the most likely thing to happen. But it is possible given the way that Guerrier has come on strong lately as a talented veteran (the new Alpha?) And Hawkins still has more in his game to give. So does Goode. And we’ve seen what Domask is capable of in breaking loose.

Maybe be the Illini won’t be able to compete at a Final Four level. We'll soon get an idea. But there is no reason why they cannot go Sweet Sixteen at least. And once you’re at that level you still have a chance.

Coach U has known about this situation for a while according to reports. And if so, you know he’s been thinking about how to handle this and what to do with his roster. Probably for a good while now.

As they say, you can’t always control what’s going to happen to you in life (as a Team here, that is). But you can always have control over how you respond to it.

Play and fight like hell on the court, Illini. Give it your best without excuses. Make Illini Nation proud, and yourselves. That is what’s required here.
TSJ was by far the best player on the team this year. It was underappreciated how good he was defensively. Losing him absolutely means we are now a bubble team. No one else on the team can score the ball the way he does which opened up scoring opportunities for others who lack strong ability to create their own shots off the dribble.

It's amazing how snake-bit our program is! Here's a short list just quickly thinking about it:
1. Ben Wilson
2. Deon Thomas
3. J Smith/Brian Carwell
4. Kendrick Nunn
5. Dickie Beal not getting called for over the back at the half court corner in the 1984 elite 8 game at Rupp( I was there and had sight-line to the play)
6. Horrific officiating in the 2005 championship game( also at that game, 5th row along baseline) with phantom fouls called on us any time someone breathed on Sean May yet Roger Powell got hammered repeatedly down low with no calls- All because it was "Good Old Roy Williams deserves to get a national championship." In complete honesty- if the referring were more balanced- I think we had a 50% chance of winning that game- teams were evenly matched.
7. I recall there being a missed foul call along the baseline near the end of the game in which one of Groce's teams made the tournament- a first round game that would have gotten us into at least the next round- don't recall the specifics.
8. I'm sure there are others.

This is devastating news for the program.I'm so bummed- loved this team and it's chances to go to FF.
Even if TSJ found innocent- this will change the trajectory of his entire life. Not sure how the program won't take a big step backwards. Can't see any way he's gonna play for us going forward.

One would think these athlete's would have hammered into the how to avoid situations such as this- as others have said, what is the meaning of actual informed consent. Sounds crazy but if a one night stand scenario is about to take place- that the athlete would need to have the consenting party verbalize into the athletes phone their informed consent and that they are not under the influence of alcohol, drugs, etc that would alter their decision making process. Sounds crazy but in this day and age.....

Even putting aside the upending of the lives involved in this, in particular the safety of alleged victim, this is a program altering event. Immediate, short-term, medium-term, and possibly long-term, program altering.
The program only has to focus on dealing with this the correct way. Put the law and the people above the sport. Stick to an ethical anchoring. And then, on the court, it’s next man up. We could all live with a team that doesn’t go quite as far if the team kept its integrity along the way. The silver lining is guys like Goode or Domask get to step into bigger roles and some of the Freshmen may get a bit more court time.
