I bet Jim Phillips would jump at this job.
And I think a lot of the criticism of Warren has been extremely unfair in many ways, but he was never going to have the credibility necessary to do the job well, that ship had sailed. The commute from Rosemont to Arlington Heights isn't too bad.
The only thing that really matters here is that Whitman doesn't become a candidate, which he absolutely could be.

I don't criticize Warren for the COVID handling, as this was dictated to him from further up the food chain. I absolutely criticize Warren for his mismanagement of the league's on field/court product degradation due to no officiating quality control, and his decision to gift the 2020-2021 basketball regular season championship to Michigan.
I think (hope, pray) that Whitman is considered "too young" for the job. I hope another commissioner takes the job for 10-15 years and Whitman becomes commissioner after helping oversee Illinois into becoming a national powerhouse that everyone hates like Alabama in football and Duke in basketball.

For whatever it's worth, I think he deserves far more criticism for CHANGING the league's championship criteria to put Ohio State in the football title game than he does for HOLDING to the league's criteria in naming Michigan the sole champion. But he set the precedent with one and then didn't follow it with the other, that much is true.
Everyone knows who the real 2021 champion was, even Hunter Dickinson himself. I don't lose a moment's sleep over that.
But anyway, it was absolutely the COVID thing. The Big Ten is a conference that settles things behind closed doors and speaks with one voice. That's what Jim Delany built. When the new guy screwed that up in such a high-profile fashion immediately, he was done, there was never any coming back from that.
If he gets the job with the Bears his signature won’t be on any apology letters from the Big Ten Office. Shoot!
Will he take Juwan Howard with him? Seriously, I hope we get a commissioner who will treat everyone equally and fairly.

Warren did dtep into big shoes, but he has greatly disappointed many people
Lets hope , that if he goes, and I think he will, they get Jim Phillips to take the job.
I dont want to lose Josh , but I dont think JW has the experience yet that many in the league would want from their commish.

It sounds like Warren is going to the Bears. He has been an NFL executive before and helped the Vikings build US Bank Stadium. Fits that role well. I hope the B1G finds someone who treats every school equally.

The B1G would be crazy to start this search with any other candidate, and he would be crazy to say no. Let's hope it's that simple.
Maybe, but if that's true then it's on the powers that be who hired him and did not explain how things work in the B10. I believe Warren's marching orders came from an even higher level than them. They just "encouraged" him to "fix" it after the fact. JMO. It also doesn't diminish the fact that he has absolutely mismanaged the product, but maybe that is also dictated from above his position.

and I dont think he's ever gotten the warm fuzzy feeling from alot of people - and rightfully so .
Came her to see if anyone posted this yet, if he goes I wonder if this would speed up expansion with whoever comes in wanting to build their legacy quickly. . . probably not as it's pretty simply all about TV $$.

I spoke in another thread yesterday about the inherent personality type and attitude differences between university faculty leadership-type people and college football-type people.
The Big Ten Commissioner answers to both groups and has to forge consensus between them, a consensus workable enough to package the whole thing up and sell it to entertainment industry TV dealmaker types (a third, much worse, kind of person). That's the gig.
Warren got caught in between on the Covid thing. He took the marching orders from the University presidents (his nominal bosses) not realizing that they themselves didn't have the institutional sway to kill a college football season at many of their institutions. It speaks to someone who wasn't experienced and seasoned in that culture.

Warren as CEO/President of the Bears will be a big improvement over Ted Phillips, ND grad and former bean counter at Ernst & Young. I knew a guy at Arthur Andersen back in the 1980's, who was in Ted Phillips class at ND, and in 1988, when Phillips got his first named position at the Bears (assistant GM ? ) , was so mad at his "luck" then, as he said Phillips was nothing. Average student at best. Far from the top 25% in the class.
For all the fair criticisms of Warren I do think he's handled some things just fine, namely conference expansion where he's managed to toe the line between overzealous expansion and stagnancy and the result is now we find the Big 10 is in a position to be one of 2 super-conferences. That's not nothing.
Can the Big 10 do better? Absolutely. Would I rather Warren stay on so as to remove any chance JW gets the call? 100%. The good JW has done and would continue to do for our athletics far outweighs any of Warren's ills, and while JW doesn't have the longest resume, he's been an AD for 12 years, at 3 different schools, and been a resounding success at every one. Others in our conference will no doubt have taken notice so I have to imagine he'll get at least some consideration.
Edit: as an added note, if Jim Phillips gets the job (which would make a ton of sense) the ACC job opens up, and I wouldn't be surprised to see JW as a candidate for that opening either.

Warren will be better suited with the Bears. They need someone who has experience working in that role and who has experience working on new stadium deals. Someone who knows the inner workings of getting new stadium deals done and pushing that process along.
This is a win-win for the B1G and the Bears.
While I love JW as our AD, there is no way he’ll be the next B1G Commissioner if Warren leaves.
Obviously becoming BIG commissioner would be a promotion both financially and positionally for JW, but he bleeds orange and blue and I hope he wants to stay here at least for a little while longer, especially with football really starting to take off. being AD at his Alma Mater may mean more to him than being BIG comissioner. but if it does happen, he would definitely run the conference the right way and could enact positive changes
