I think Illinois is a safer job than Indiana only because you will have a longer leash. Groce would not have lasted 5 years a IU, IMO.

Yes, my point is not that Keatts, a mid-major coach, was at the same level as Sampson or Crean. But at the time of their hiring, Sampson and Crean were hardly considered hot names in the coaching marketplace for IU standards, both at least 5 years removed from their F4, none had made it to a S16. Crean in particular, had finished 8th, 9th, 4th (tied), 5th (tied), and 5th (tied) in Conference USA after Wade left. Hardly a name who you'd say deserved Indiana. Once you strike out on top choices, things get blurry.

I never thought Sampson and Crean were Indiana-level coaches.

Keatts will need to upgrade a staff that is thin on experience but otherwise terrific candidate.

Does this diminish Keatts or improve the chances that we hire Bennett. I like Keatts a lot but not over Bennett, Marshall or Miller.

I really hope neither. JW should be evaluating bodies of work not this years NCAA result.

I'd be very satisfied with Kevin Keatts. Would just like to know we struck out with the premiere guys before Whitman announces him.

This one result doesn't change either one. All it does is mean that Keatts is now available for negotiations if Illinois is interested.

Love that Keatts "low-major" athletes and coaching could put up 70 on the vaunted Virginia defense. Loved the way his guys competed and he came out at the starts of both halves firing on all cylinders, which to me shows good preparation and game planning, getting his guys ready to go. They relied on a few too many NBA-range threes, but maybe that's what you need to do to score on Virginia. This game only enhanced his appeal to me.

Get a quick read on Bennett and Miller and if they aren't sending you serious bedroom eyes back, go get Keatts.
