Not completely sure of his history, but how about Rick Stansbury - Western Kentucky?

You people are smoking some strange weed if you think Marshall is on the candidate list. Yes, Whitman would love to hire him, but he isn't taking Illinois phone call. A complete joke to say otherwise. Stop talking about him, it will NEVER, EVER happen.

I think it is laughable when people on this board talk in definitive terms, like anyone on this board has any idea how Marshall would react.....maybe he wants to win a national championship and I don't think anyone would argue that road through WSU is much more difficult than through a school like Illinois. Bottom line, no one knows what Marshall is thinking.

Will be interesting to see who Whitman ends up getting.....I certainly don't think Marshall would not 'take a call from Illinois'....

If you are tired of playing in light gray areas and want to jump immediately past dark gray and into the murky darkness then Rick Stansbury is your man.

Wichita is seriously considering leaving The Valley so that will help solve Marshall's 1-bid league and seeding problem.

Wichita is seriously considering leaving The Valley

To be what, like a basketball-only member of the AAC or something?

Without a football program, no one wants them.

Gregg Marshall is going to figure out that he can't build a superpower, or even a Gonzaga, at Wichita State. That doesn't mean he'll leave, that doesn't mean he'll come to Illinois, but he is going to reach that realization if he hasn't already.

They are going to leave for the AAC...not exactly a powerhouse conference

Holy crap I hope this isn't serious

Lol, saw this chatter about JT3 and seriously wondered if someone dropped the "/sarcasm" tag at the end. His recent trajectory and Georgetown's growing impatience are enough to warrant a quick pass. Whatever magic he had seems to have fallen on tough times and not willing to bet that a "change of scenery" is what he needs.

The choice for Marshall is not Illinois vs Wichita St. It is Illinois vs the many great jobs that will open in the next 5-10 years. At his age, why try and rebuild a truly broken program when he could walk right into other schools that have a better pedigree and/or a more solid recent history? IU, UNC, and even Kentucky will hire new coaches in the next 5-7 years. Worth the wait for Marshall.

I think this is a great job for a certain type of candidate. Marshall ain't that guy, imo.

I'd have said the same exact thing exactly 12 months ago.

Then Whitman hired Lovie Smith as our football coach.

Then we find out we have $4-4.5M to spend if needed and I'll never be surprised by any name out there.

Who knows I'll say we have our name after first weekend of the tournament.

Marshall will be 61 years old in 7 years. UNC will only consider a Carolina Man (same with Duke and the Coach K tree), Cal isn't going anywhere at UK unless the NCAA goes nuclear on them (same with Self at KU).

Indiana seems like a good fit to me. I have always guessed that that would be their guy if they fire Crean this year.

But if they don't, and Marshall has his eye on the exit door (knowing that he's one bad year away from not having any of these options anymore), the clearly lower "ranked" Illinois job starts looking pretty tantamount to the same thing.

It's not really about us. It's about Marshall. If he hasn't reached the epiphany about Wichita State's limitations yet, or if he's just accepted them, then he ain't coming.

Per some boosters, seems we have fallen a bit too far as a program to convince the legit candidates to climb us out. And before someone asks, I'm the guy that called JT / SLU fiasco post-commitment like 3 months before
