I may be in the minority but I would be thrilled with that. He's a helluva coach.

He seems to bring great energy and passion wherever he goes. Can he keep Tilmon/Frazier and land Smith? I really feel like Archie could do that, which is why I won't give up hope.

Just heard it's not going to be Cuonzo after all.

Seems sensible. Wonder how long it will be before we know. At a minimum, I'd expect our next coach to be in the tournament through Sat/Sun.

That's incorrect.

And regardless, the guy can really develop players. Half the NBA played for him at Marquette.

No that's correct. I was, in fact, underwhelmed. I'd be happy to hear that I have no good reason to be underwhelmed though. I just saw mostly unranked & 3 stars, with a couple 4 stars here and there. Looking at Rivals. Tell me I'm wrong, though...I'd love to be!

I feel like I got a lukewarm reception when I brought him up in the Carousel thread? Maybe I'm not remembering right.

I think he would just kill it here.

That is a grand slam Plan A guy, no question.

But he's a bit of a shyster, so I don't know how well he and Whitman would hit it off, and he's making a ton of money already with iron clad job security.

He is a good coach, but I feel the same about Buzz as I feel about Frank Martin. Very antagonistic personalities that will likely clash with many people in the administration and surrounding basketball community.

With F. Martin as the comparison IDK why but I'd rather have Martin, even though I know I shouldn't.

I have to say- reading up about Buzz gets me quite enthused about him. Given where Va Tech came from, what he's accomplished has been amazing. And his record at Marquette was stellar

Buzz Williams would be a good hire. He's already won over 200 games and he's 44 years old. He was great at Marquette and has rapidly turned around an moribund program at VA Tech. I'd be pumped. If he's legitimately in play, he probably slots 3rd on my list.

And despite this, the Hokies went 22-10 and 10-8 in a year when the ACC is loaded with good teams. The stars don't always matter if the right coach can develop and maximize the talent he has.

At least we can have Jimmy Butler pitch for us in Chicago.

Speaking of VA Tech, hearing the selection show mention that this was their first bid since 2007 brought back some pretty rough memories.

I only care about stars.

And his record at Marquette was stellar

And there is a reason he left, in a lateral move at best, without being able to parlay that success into a higher level opportunity.

I think you could make the argument that, when you combine every factor Buzz Williams is the best combo of proven + upside available. Full stop.

RSCI #61 and #87 in his first class.

RSCI #61 and #95 his second year.

RSCI #38 and #71 in the incoming 2017 class.

At freaking Virginia Tech. Who were flat on their back when he arrived, and he's taken those guys and won in the brutal ACC.

This from a guy who won the formerly even more brutal Big East. Twice. At Marquette. And as previously mentioned, he had a hand in developing legitimately like 8 NBA players there (a few of whom were Crean recruits, admittedly).

This is one of the best coaches out there.

But he's got a secure job making a ton of money, and you'd be lying to say he wasn't just a tad Bruce Pearl-y.

He gets the most out of his players and lets them play. He is also very good a game prep and detail. He may be the Anti-JG because of the above and because he's probably not as warm and fuzzy.

Reason he left was situation crumbling at Big East/Marquette. Right? You're saying couldn't get better job because personality is difficult? Find hard to believe. If your results are good enough, that's hasn't stopped difficult abrasive guys before. Not saying I'd love an abrasive HC, but benefits can outweigh costs.

I assume you're alluding to the handling of the sexual assault allegations a few years back. Definitely a concern. Six of his players were also cited for underage drinking and there were whispers about a party culture permeating the program throughout his tenure. Even if there's mutual interest, he might not get through the vetting process. That said, the guy can coach.
