Among the guys I see as bona fide options right now

1. Keatts
2. Musselman
3. Capel (not getting enough mention)
4. Jankovich
5. Wade
6. Cuonzo
7. McDermott

I'm obviously very interested in the Archie/Marshall/Buzz group, but if I don't get hot and heavy interest immediately, I wouldn't waste a ton of effort trying to beg. Same with any continued Monty pursuit.

If Steve Prohm were interested I think he'd be right behind that top group. Larry Krystowiak would be more in the Jankovich range. Other sitting P5 guys, keep your ear to the ground and see what happens.

I still like Ben Jacobson, but I just can't see that being viable right now. Kermit Davis is a good coach, but not for us.

That's where I'm at.

I love this list and agree on the begging point. This isn't like last time. That top end is solid but those guys aren't Shaka and Stevens.

I would honestly put Jankovich in the Archie tier. He's a real star. I also like what I've read about King Rice. We've certainly got a lot of great options.

I hope Musselman gets serious consideration. You might even get Jordan Caroline in year two.

What's your thinking with Capel? He clearly has some chops, but that ending at OU was ugly.

He had a roster go completely sideways on him. They didn't give him the chance to turn it back around.

That he's gotten other good offers since then speaks loudly to me. He was GTech's first choice.

That's a dynamite resume if you want to look at it in a positive light.

I have heard every name conceivable brought up in this thread. Why do I have a feeling that JW is going surprise everybody with who he hires. :thumb:

Press conference tmrw at 11am.....Lonzo Ball will be the new head coach. Undefeated every year, #1 rank recruiting class every year and will probably leave after 1 game to coach in the NBA.

You mean Lavar Ball. :)

If that's the dad, yes. Just seen where he said back in his day he would have kicked Jordan in a game of 1 on 1. Ahhh ok.

Son of former Minnesota (Gophers and later Timberwolves) coach Bill Musselman, he's been grinding in the business since his mid 20's. He's been a head coach everywhere, the CBA, the D-League, the Dominican and Venezuelan national teams, the Warriors back in the early aughts, the Kings in the mid-aughts, and now Nevada.

He is an intense guy. He wasn't super successful as an NBA head coach, and the narrative was that his crazy high energy was part of the reason why. So, naturally college looked like an option for that personality type.

He became an assistant at Arizona State under Herb Sendek and revived his career there, then moved to LSU for the only decent year they had under Johnny Jones. In both cases he was considered the offensive svengali who instantly transformed their ability to score.

Then he gets the Nevada job (he had previously coached the Reno Bighorns in the D-League, so there was some connection there).

Pre Musselman:

2014: 15-17 (Kenpom 144)
2015: 9-22 (Kenpom 271)

Musselman:

2016: 24-14 (Kenpom 124)
2017: 28-6 (Kenpom 55) Outright Mountain West Champions

Recruited some big time transfers who aren't eligible yet. Has a hot young wife. Tweets motivational quotes incessantly (like, even for a basketball coach). What else can help you with?

Awesome stuff, thanks. Don't know anything about the situation, but I'm worried he will stay in Nevada 1 more year (assuming we are interested). At least, that is what I would do if I was building a program up and had big time talent coming in. Blow the roof off Nevada next year then take your pick of any opening you want (and more money, too).

You know of any connections that could attract him to Illinois?

Kinda a yawner for me. I've watched him (Will Wade) some this year only and I don't think his team overachieves. Two of his wins this year were last second flukes.... I would rather take a bigger gamble on a higher ceiling guy. Do we know how much of the recruiting is him vs the recent VCU buzz/success of SS.

He could turn out to be a great coach - but I am hoping we can attract a more exciting pick.
Exactly. And if we're using the same barometer of having "improved the program" as has been done with CMartin, then Will Wade doesn't measure up yet. Definitely not yet at VCU and while he did to a degree at Chattanooga, a closer examination shows that he inherited a team that only graduated two seniors and had a lot of underclassmen.

Capel is an interesting name and one that if announced I would not be displeased at all. He feels similar to Cuonzo in a way.

Both played for and coached under legends. Both have proven to be excellent recruiters. Both had success at mid-major and then a mixed bag at Power 5 school.

Capel is certainly the most palatable of the Duke coaching tree

Fat Greg and Old Greg, co-head coaches!

The first Illini team I followed had "Big Greg" Jackson (RIP) on it. Now we have Fat Greg and Old Greg. About covers it, I guess.

Long-time internet poster here but new to Loyalty. Enjoying the show. I trust Whitman and am confident that we will be seeing improvement in the coming years. Gotta be better in both hoops and FB than the last five years.

Cuonzo's bag isn't really mixed. It's just kinda cornflakes, it's uniform blah.

Capel at Oklahoma was Lucky Charms. They made marshmallows happen, but then there were some of the awful regular pieces.

Yes but the marshmallows combined with regular pieces leaves you with a blah too. Neither have won a conference title and neither have coached in what I would call their home territory.

Capel at N.C. State would sure make for some interesting recruiting battles.

I know you like Capel more, but I think they are very comparable and acceptable hires here

Taken some shots at some lists, here is my own for you all to shoot at...

1.) Gregg Marshall - Nobody coaches them up and wins big games like him
2.) Larry Kristkowiak - watched him beat Cuonzo with a lot less talent
3.) Tim Jankovich - Great at ISU, great at SMU, great at ...

Of course my dream is Lon Kruger with a staff of the Rev, Deon Thomas, Dee Brown, and Deron Williams/Kenny Battle.

You think Jank was great at ISU? I'd go solid if unspectacular

You have got to like a guy who was agitated enough with the officials, that he skips the handshake line and heads directly to the officials room only to be restrained by his AD. :D

Jankovich inherited good players at ISU and then went downhill. He was only 48-42 in the Valley. At SMU, he is playing with Brown's recruits. Plus, he is 58. Pass.

This guy comes with some baggage but shouldn't Ben Howland at least be mentioned with the success he's had at UCLA.

Am I the only one that doesn't get the infatuation with former players? I want the best possible staff we can bring in, I don't care what uniform they wore in college.
