which coach who is out there do you think Illinois could counter with? just curious on who you think would be a good coach to get to counter the Mizzou move

No 1 is Archie Miller. Both Miller brothers have a great reputation in AAU and recruiting circles. Kevin Keatts is also a person that coaches regularly talk about as "one of them." Archie is obviously a safer pick.

A mediocre recruiter can basically become a good recruiter by winning lots of games. The product on the court speaks for itself.

No, we need the same thing we've needed the whole time. The right guy.

Haha, I love how this board melts down with the Zo to Zou announcement, but had ILL hired Zo I predict the same thing would have happened because we would be settling for a guy who just absolutely crashed and burned away a tourney birth at Cal. This board is just an absolute sideshow sometimes.

Again, it just shows you that Cuonzo Martin to Mizzou is bad news. He can recruit. Recruiting closer to Illinois and regularly competing in recruiting against us, has little to do with whether people like his overall coaching abilities or not.

We need a very dynamic recruiter to counter.

We don't need to counter to MU. Whitman's got it covered.

The "recruiting" dial on the mixture of qualities Illinois ought to be looking for in a coach did not suddenly get cranked to 11 today.

Our needs remain the same.

No, but recruiting did become more difficult with SLU adding Ford, and now Mizzou adding Cuonzo. No doubt about that, there is no denying that.

Yep. Mizzou has a couple of talented players on the team already. Cuonzo was also in deep with several top 2018 west coast kids. They could easily finish top 3 or 4 in the B12 the next couple of years and then start really recruiting like crazy. This could turn out to be a real bummer.

That would be impressive indeed! Since Miznoz is in the SEC. ;)

I would have been absolutely disappointed had Zo been hired at ILL -- would have felt like a hire that had a low ceiling outside of recruiting. I feel as though this board would have had a very lukewarm reaction had we hired him. My prediction is that he's out in 3-4 years at Zou. Look at his track record. It speaks for itself.

I am so conflicted, I want to see how Keatts does in the tournament, I would like to see him go deep to elite eight at least. But selfishly, want him to go out early so we can snatch him up and end all the speculation.

In regards to only the coaching situation, I think we should all realize that Kahn-zo going to Mizz-uo is a good thing. JW is obviously targeting somebody who in his mind is a better target. Which I trust he will make happen.

First and foremost we need a good coach. Win games and Illinois will not have a problem finding good players that is why I like Jacobson (UNI) and obviously more so Tony Bennett both those guys can really coach.

Don't expect to see him go very deep, that draw vs. UVA was very unlucky for UNCW. Not a good matchup.

Whitman, seriously...

Boy, we have a lot of posters who talk a big game about not needing a short term recruiting burst at the cost of potential long-term success when it's in the abstract and then lose their minds when presented with the reality.

This is the exact prognostication presented before today and everyone was "meh" at best.

I said this earlier, but again, if you want to hire a guy proven to be a good coach - why does everyone always want him to lose asap in the tournament?

Breaking News: Illinois hires UNC-Wilm head coach Keatts, who lead his team to a Sweet Sixteen appearance as a 12 seed, to the same position. Sources say deal is for 5 years $3.2 million dollars

Sounds a lot better to me than the alternative...

I'd present the past 3 seasons of Cal Basketball as an Exhibit to this case study it sounds like you're conducting.

No, JW was just unwilling to commit to Cuonzo.

Which was a risk, a calculated gamble. In my view a correct one, but I'm operating with incomplete information.

Yes. Not willing to commit because he is targeting others he thinks could be better
