I can't believe some of you would question hiring Bennett. It's laughable to the point of insanity. The guy is a first class winner and coaches/develops his players better than most coaches in NCAA basketball.

Posters here wouldn't be the only ones.

Bennett is not what the Deon Thomas/Kendall Gill/Robert Smith/Stephen Bardo caucus have in mind either.

I was in the pro-Cuonzo camp, dating all the way back to last season...and I find myself a bit relieved.

The guy who runs my softball league says that "softball is a weird and wonderful game".

This is true of coaching searches as well.
I agree with you, I am relieved as well.

And if its Bennett putting the info out, it feels like a cash grab to get more from UVA.

I think it's a big mistake to think that recruiting and player development are binary models.

They are not but we are currently a struggling program. We do not have the luxury to wait 4-5 years for Martin and Ford to fail. Their current and short term impact in recruiting, in the next 3 years, will have more negative impact to us. We need recruits and need them soon. We have been irrelevant for the last 12 years.

He's arguably the best Xs and Os coach in college basketball (what a change that would be). I would only have a slight worry that the very top talent might be out of his range as a recruiter, but he is likely to win 25 games a year even without the 5* guys - he has been for years

Walker has followed Groce around, though.

True, but loyalty only gets you so far. Groce currently doesn't know where he ends up and Walker may not have a job at Illinois depending on who the new HC is. I think Walker has future HC aspirations, so he is going to do whatever is best for him and his family. If that means taking a raise and being an assistant at Mizzou, then he is going to do that.

If Cuonzo is getting hired at Mizzou, his first priority is going to be finding other coaches with ties to the area.....Walker (unfortunately for us) fits that description. The downside for us, is that the biggest factor in Tilmon's recruitment is his relationship with Walker.....if he goes somewhere else, I think we lose Tilmon no matter who we hire as a coach.

If Walker went to Missouri that is different. Why would Walker go to Missouri? If anything in Missouri, he would probably want to go back to SLU. What ties does he have to Missouri? Just cause he knows Martin?

If Martin is smart (and our new coach doesn't give JW a job) he'll offer him a job so he can pull JT...

Cuonzo will bring Tracy Webster (unless he takes a head job at a mid-major). Wyking Jones will probably stay out west. Hard to say re: Tim O'Toole. Wouldn't be surprised if Zo has two spots to fill on his bench. Hiring Porter, Sr and Walker would be smart. Frankly, it's what i'd do.

The guy is a first class winner and coaches/develops his players better than most coaches in NCAA basketball. Do we realize how AWFUL it's been watching our team the last 10 years? Do we realize how few NCAA tournaments we've been in the last 10 years?

I'd take Marshall over Bennett maybe Miller too but no one else. I just think those guys have more upside but Bennett would be great.

If Bennett came here, he could be our version of Bo Ryan, there I said it. He may not play the flashiest style, he may not get all the 5* kids out of Chicago, but he is going to recruit guys that fit his style and win with them. I'd be thrilled with a Bennett hire.

Label me officially worried a little, mark smith had an offer from California Missouri is close to home and this may be a selling point with Mark

Bennett to Illinois
Cuonzo to Mizzou (looks like that's done now)
Gregg to Indiana
Archie to NC St.
Keatts to Virginia
Kelsey to Wichita St.
Musselman to Cal (seems like a great fit)

I'm too lazy to worry about the rest.

I'm probably irrationally worrying that it will be:

Keatts to NC State
Martin to Mizzou
Archie, Crean, Bennett and Marshall stay put

Illinois: Bueller anyone Bueller...

I am the opposite. I thought he would be very successful in recruiting, that was the big attraction. Never thought he was great overall. But him going to Mizzou is a very negative development. Combine that with Ford at SLU, extremely negative. Increases the pressure to get a very dynamic recruiter, because the competition for local talent just increased by a lot. I can tell you first hand that Cuonzo is very visible and liked in AAU circles.

I don't think it's that simple. I think we could block other B1G schools as well as Miznoz if we let him out of his LOI. So - he wouldn't be able to be on scholarship, at least in his first year.
