Here's my issue with Bennett. He's a guy who does more with less. He's not the guy who's going to get you back to back to back top 5 recruiting classes. His teams are going to be tough, play defense and aren't going to beat themselves, but they aren't going to beat you just by rolling the ball out on the floor. Keep in mind, Izzo knocked Bennett's best teams out of the tournament twice, as a lower seed.

Conversely, a guy like Martin is going to give you probably more NBA talent, more exciting recruiting, probably a more exciting brand of basketball, BUT, not as disciplined, hard nosed and defense oriented.

They are two completely different styles and neither of them have Final Four pedigree.

SO....If we're talking about throwing around darn near 5M dollars per year, I'd hope we're getting the full package and not a guy who can do more with less or a guy who has more, but has done less.

I want a guy who gets too talent, can develop top talent to be elite and can keep us in the top 20 each and every year....With a special run in the tournament mixed in sporadically.

Good post but who is that full package guy? Archie Miller? Marshall?

I'm probably irrationally worrying that it will be:

Keatts to NC State
Martin to Mizzou
Archie, Crean, Bennett and Marshall stay put

Illinois: Bueller anyone Bueller...

This has been my worry from day one. Lose the recruiting class and end up with a Coach no better than Groce. Now that Martin is off the board.....Clock is ticking.

I'm sitting here wondering about the alternate universe in which we waited until after the NIT to fire Groce.

I've wondered the same thing. Watching all this unfold while we're advancing in the NIT, with an interim HC and our 2017 recruiting class in peril.....Isn't an optimal situation.

More than anything with Mizzou hiring Martin, this really speeds up the shot clock for us to get something done. With things like Walker, Tilmon, Smith hanging in the balance, the quicker the better.

I'm now super rooting for Virginia to get bounced early so we can get this going.

I don't get it. What would we have gained by keeping Groce on through the NIT?

Mizzou's job would still have been open.

Our search and announcement isn't being held up by the NIT at all. They will announce the hire regardless of where we are. The "hold up" is likely that our next coach is in the NCAA Tourney

That this is now "irrational" shows what a ridiculous position this thread puts people in.

The quoted scenario is not pessimism, it's the base level hypothesis. The whole point of the coaching search thread was to essentially rank the "Buellers"

Not that I'm giving up on Keatts to NC State by any means, but it's possible.

Anytime you change coaches there's going to be a risk of losing a recruiting class and ending up with someone no better then what you started with. Let the process play out and see what happens.

A 7 year deal for Zo at Mizzou. 7 years is a loooong time. If they are really paying him 3.5 x7 ...woof.

Wow, well done by his agent. I'm guessing Mizzou is building in a serious buy-out to protect themselves, but they have limited leverage.

If I'm going to spend that money, it's going to be Marshall.

He's got a level of arrogance that we've been missing
He's got an aggressive personality.
His teams flat out win
His teams have a nasty attitude
He's developed NBA talent
He has Final Four pedigree

If he stayed at Wichita State for another 5 years....They're probably going to be thought of as a Gonzaga like program and I don't think any of us would say no to Mark Few.

If you give him a recruiting area like ours and facilities like ours....Combined with the traits that he already has....That would be my choice.
