That's a good hire for Mizzou, and a good move by Cuonzo if the reported $3.5M salary is correct. I think recruiting ESL will be harder for us now, and I hope that we are able to retain the incoming freshman class (plus add Smith).

But let's not pretend like a bit of the shine didn't wear off Cuonzo's resume when his team dropped 6 of their last 9 games with the tourney on the line, missed the NCAAs, and lost to CSU-Bakersfield in the first round of the NIT. In fact, that feels decidedly Groce-like.

Cuonzo was a great backup, and it's too bad he's off the market already, but we still have several options in play.

Cool! OK, so, in lieu of big news, let's do a job interview. First: How will you recruit Chicago?

Good question, but the very fact that you are asking him questions tells me that he is not our guy. Why?

Because, our guy will be asking JW questions
What is your philosophy on scheduling?
What are your expectations on program growth and status?
How do you handle yourself publicly when we hit a rough patch?
How do you interact with your coaches when you are not happy with results?
Do you have facilities plans beyond what is here already? Dorms? Practice? Airplanes?

The coach will be well proven and at least 50% of the questions will be asked of JW, not by JW.
And that is as it should be, imo. Our targets should be more established than our AD.
That is the guy that I want as our next MBB coach

Many targets in play tomorrow:

11:40 AM: Bennett vs. Keatts

12:30 PM: Holtman

3:30 PM: B. Drew

8:40 PM: Buzz

I didn't include Mack, Wade, or Musselman.

The money. Doesn't. Matter.

Keatts is, has always been, and will always be a home run.

I don't know why I'm letting myself get so bothered by this board doing what they always do and treating not one but SEVERAL laughable pipe dreams as guarantees that we must merely choose between, but after the MT "embarrassing search" nonsense, how else am I supposed to react?

You aren't following your own conversation. Your scenario has a handful of not-at-all-pipedream candidates being "stolen" including Keatts. The shock in my response is that if we have $25 million to spend and are the last job on the totem pole, that's incredible.

I'm just blown away how hiring Porter's dad isn't some sort of recruiting violation.

It's not semantics. Monty Williams people took our temperature. We were interested but not ready to pull the trigger. He decided to save face with his current employer.

Just to be clear, Monty's employer is the Spurs, whose offer to him was essentially "come spend some time around the team and pick any job title you want."

Pop loves Monty and they just wanted to be his stepping stone back into coaching, wherever he decides to go.

There was no saving face.
