Monty Williams, Tony Bennett, Archie Miller and Gregg Marshall will not be the next coach at Illinois. The longer it takes for that to be clear to you all, the more painful the memory of this search is going to be, the more damage is going to be done to Josh Whitman's credibility, and the deeper the cynicism and fatalism of this fanbase is going to go.

Which, y'know, whatever. Winning will cure all of that so fast it will make your head spin. But it's frustrating from tonight's vantage point.

Just curious -- and I'll let you know up front that my biggest pet peeve on this board is posters who speak in absolutes -- as to why you're making such a definitive statement. I'm not an insider, but have subs to other sites and I can let you know that the info I've seen directly contradicts what you're posting. Not going to give any other specifics.

All this coach speculation getting you nervous? Need something to take your mind off it for a while? Here's one idea:

http://abc7chicago.com/sports/vasectomy-procedures-spike-during-march-madness/1802135/

Snips:

March Madness means basketball, brackets, and vasectomies. You read that right. According to Dr. Victor Brugh from Urology of Virginia, there is a spike in vasectomy appointments during the height of college basketball season.

"A lot of guys try to do it this time of year," said Dr. Brugh on News 3 This Morning. "This week and next week are pretty full already just because of the fact guys are looking early in the year for getting it done this week."

the same thing that bennett showed theyd go from an nit appearance to a sweet 16. fact is, cuonzo has never been in a p5 place more than 3 years. I'm not saying Martin was my first choice. I just don't think Bennett is a sure thing and I think this message board undermines the fit that is necessary to be successful at Illinois.

Bennett had a positive trend line of taking over a team ranked 104 per kenpom and got them to 33 in year 3. Martin took over a team ranked 60 got up to 28 in year 2, then dropped to 63 in year 3. And looking at Cal's roster, if they lose Rabb to the draft then there is no way they are a better team next year.

Good question, but the very fact that you are asking him questions tells me that he is not our guy. Why?

Because, our guy will be asking JW questions
What is your philosophy on scheduling?
What are your expectations on program growth and status?
How do you handle yourself publicly when we hit a rough patch?
How do you interact with your coaches when you are not happy with results?
Do you have facilities plans beyond what is here already? Dorms? Practice? Airplanes?

The coach will be well proven and at least 50% of the questions will be asked of JW, not by JW.
And that is as it should be, imo. Our targets should be more established than our AD.
That is the guy that I want as our next MBB coach

Well said

Like the day he tweeted we were getting Rick George. And the day he tweeted we were getting Cliff Alexander. And the day he tweeted we were getting Kevin Sumlin.

It gets clicks.

I, for one, am glad we didn't get Sumlin. Can't coach his way out of a paper bag. Recruits well, though.

Bennett is about as sure as it gets. What he has done without McDonald's All-Americans on the roster in the ACC is nothing short of amazing.

Bennett's teams have an identity. I miss Illinois basketball having an identity.

i'm going after titles. we need burger boys. there have been only 2 champions with no mcdonald's all-americans. players win championships. That's more of a sure thing these days than Xs and Os - which i find phenomenal that this msg board has so many professional Xs and Os analysts.

What's everyone think about Ben Howland? I don't think it would take a pirates loot to get him here plus I think he would choose Illinois over staying at Miss St. Got a proven track record at UCLA and the guy can flat out recruit. Just look at this year's and next year's recruiting class at Miss St. All I'm saying is he's worth looking at also.

Going back how far? You can't throw out that stat and not back it up with the data.

I am not an insider either, though I'm getting a lot of the information you are.

The desire for these guys to take meetings, be courted, and entertain offers from Illinois is real. The reporting is good.

They are accepting the opportunity to be "pitched" by Illinois in order to give them leverage for contract extensions. They aren't going to leave.

Doesn't mean making those pitches is the wrong thing to do. Unless it drags on forever.

I don't care about Kenpom. In year 3 they made the tourney and left in the first round. it wasn't until year 5 that he did anything. I'm just reiterating that Martin could easily achieve that with players alone given the talent between STL and Chicago. I don't want illinois known as the winningest program without a championship. I know our place and it's not where Doug gottlieb thinks it is. We've got to rebrand ourselves as the cool place to be for Chicago athletes. It takes a certain coach to do that. I think Miller stands a better chance than Bennett.

Ha again, agreed on all, but I really can't get on board with absolute statements like that. How about just trying to phrase it..."In my opinion"

This logic makes sense for Bennett, but why would you feel certain that Archie wouldn't leave Dayton for Illinois? How can you be certain Dayton can counter $25m?

Something not mentioned here, if we get Tony Bennett, Lady Gaga does the half time shows. Lighten up people its just a basketball coach its not the end of the world. That happens when the Sharks fall from the sky when it rains, or we have tornadoes, Ian Ziering will save us or may be our next coach.

If MO assembles a staff of ace recruiters, good for them. The Miz brand and leadership hasn't proved anything that leads me to believe they can sustain momentum over a considerable(10 years) period of time.

To an extent, we haven't either(in a long time) - but it feels like we're turning the corner as a program. It starts with leadership. I'll take a great coach that will build a culture, with full commitment from the administration and alumni, over MO's approach. Maybe that's the best they can do - I'm not ready to throw in the towel.

Same pet peeve here. It helps if you insert "IMO" when reading those 'absolute' posts because that's what it appears to be.

Josh Whitman has done nothing in his one plus year to make me doubt him.

Super confident we end up with a big name.

Illinois basketball is going to be fun again.

Sky point
