LOL!

So, you're saying that JW won't want to promote a guy from a mid-major, but at the same time, a higher profile coach won't have much interest in the job.

That's a heck of a quagmire that you've laid out for us all to consider. Lol
Also, I wouldn't call UNC-W a mid-major program. The Colonial Athletic is below that.

I stole this from another poster elsewhere, but I think it sums things up pretty well:

Bennett grew up in Wisconsin, following the Big Ten, dad coached....in the Big a ten....wished someone had given him the chance to play....in the big Ten....was an assistant coach on a Badger team that broke through to the Final Four...........in the Big Ten........now has a chance at what the coaching fraternity knows is a sleeping giant in one of the best concentration of hoops talent exists within driving distance, with great facilities, great fans a big arena that will be packed, as a top 5 NCAA head coach.......in the Big Ten

So with no real news...

Anybody else still thrown off by the way to pronounce Cuonzo? I was certain it would have been koo-on-zo

Man, that message board format takes me back. There's a reason most places moved on from it, though.

Showing how old I am, I remember him as a player in high school and at Purdue. It was always pronounced Con-zo. So that's how I've always known it.
The Q-wan-zo was throwing me off.

Uhh, that seems like a gross misrepresentation.

They appear to be universally confident he'll stay.

Meaningless, of course, but your schadenfreude is misplaced.

Oh of course they're saying that. But the fact that they're saying that in every post and taking shots against Champaign in every thread including ones nothing to do with that does not excude confidence in the least bit. Confidence would be having a thread on it and moving on.

It takes me back....to this message board that doesn't have that horrible format.

Coaches coach through the tourney for sure. As I mentioned before, basketball is different from football where a coach will depart in the middle of the bowl season.

I doubt seriously that a coach will be announced until his team is out of the tourney.

I was going to wait for my 1,000 post to be on big news but this thread is to much to pass up. I agree with S&C that this coaching search feels like the one 5 years ago. Is the Tony Bennet speculation just Shaka Smart Part Two? Look I am cautiously optimistic that JW will make a good hire but I expect it will be the Keatts/Musselman variety. I am not fully discounting the possibility of a "big splash" hire but I am not expecting it. The names that have been mentioned would be extremely difficult to pry away from their current situations. I don't think that this lack of splash would be something to worry about. I think the next coach will have the Illini in a significantly better place within a few years. I know it is the nature of this board, and human nature in general, to panic at the slightest of bad news. But I personally am going to let this process play out and I expect to be happy, if not pleasantly surprised, at the outcome. Carry on.
