Ubermensch

BOOM! Feed my ego.
Yeah keep the asterisks on the word great because there are only a handful of great realistic options. Bennett, Monty, Miller, and Marshall are great. Buzz, jank train, musselman, and the drew brothers are good, not great, IMO

:illinois:

I think of great in comparison to John Groce. But, yes, there are levels of greatness. That's fair.

Not trying to be that guy, but last time I had some knowledge it was questioned (understandably).

I tell you: John Groce has been fired. 30 minutes later, John Groce "officially" fired.

Anyways...

Monday, Monty Williams will be named the next head coach of the Illini.

:hailtotheorange:

I'll take it

Richard had beautiful, feathered locks
This is quite true. And he had a great stroke from beyond the arc.

A couple of years ago some publication ran a "where is he now?" story. Apparently he's in Texas doing something not even remotely related to basketball.

1. Why do you assume he was ever a legitimate candidate for the UI job?
2. You predicted Keatts would want one of the best open jobs where he can get a 500% raise? What is this sorcery???
3. No thanks to Janks. When the Larry Brown magic wears off, he's in trouble.

Respectfully answering your questions/points.

1. Many analysts had linked Keatts to the Illinois job, not just me. Lots of people on this board wanted him as well.

2. Granted I went there, but NCSU does have a lot of attractive qualities, even if Illinois can throw a lot more money at a coach. Also, we do not know the terms of his contract yet. The Triangle is a great area to live and work in, he was at Hargrave for years (1.5 hrs away), he has a ton of recruiting ties in that area (most of the people he recruited to Louisville was in NCSU's backyard), and K/Williams will be gone from there soon. Transitions are messy and he would be established enough to take advantage of it (hypothetically of course). Throw that in with the school has won 2 National Championships, regardless of how long it was ago.

I thought it was quite possible he may want Illinois based off of the money. I can only speculate with the info that I had, isn't that what we are all doing here?

3. People didn't seem to say that when Weber took over for Bill Self? I'm just saying, tough to beat going 39-4 since you took over, must be doing something right. Brown (while a snake in the grass) is a great basketball mentor.

Does anyone see the same problem I do? We aren't relevant and our coaching search is bearing that out. Look at who has been named here and cross referenced on other boards:

Martin- hired at Mizzou
Keatts - hired at NC State
Bennett - likely staying and getting a raise
Marshall - ditto
Miller - ditto

The only name that is most realistic is Monty Williams who was on nobody else's list but ours!?!? And he's a home run because why? NBA? Would he be on our list if JW didn't hire an NFL guy for the football job? Let's be honest here Lovie was the epitome of a desperation hire, are we at that point with hoops?

Hire a college coach with college chops not some guy that's never done it and nobody else wants.

A desperation hire? I can understand if you want to call it out of the box...but desperation?? Come on now.

Maybe nobody thought of him because it had been 20 years since he coached in college, but JW may have been one of the only people able to pull him because of his connection with RT.

Look, if you're that ignorant about what Monty was able to do with the roster given in NO and his national reputation among bball elite, just say that instead of using 200 words to beat around the bush.

This is patently ridiculous. Your conclusion is based on solely on your own speculations on who is and isn't willing to come here, none of which has been proven to be true (or false).

At any rate, it's entirely possible that a guy like Monty is on no one else's radar because no one else has the Jerry Colangelo connection to convince him to take a dive into the college ranks. Sometimes having a good alumni network pays off.

Cool your jets. The sky isn't falling.

Monty Williams isn't coming to Illinois. And why would we want him anyway?

I seriously doubt Whitman is going to announce a coach not he same evening the team plays.

The posting ends on Monday, which usually means at the end of the work day its closed. I can't see him announcing a coach right before they play that night...

Just seems like an unnecessary distraction.

That would be great. Another insider, taking the plunge.

Not gonna lie, I thought the Lovie hire was desperate when it was reported as well. If the team improves and he continues to recruit as he did this past cycle, I will gladly shut it.

Disagree. Halftime of a home game would be amazing if they can pull it off. I'm not going to get my hopes up based on "insiders" though.

Why does hiring a very good coach with the personality and leadership qualities to be a successful college coach come across as desperate?
