It's really too bad...as Gary Bender said on the video I attached, it was one of the great traditions in College Football; certainly as good as Jump Around at Wisky or Shout at Oregon or dotting the I at tOSU. Sad that the two sides couldn't reach a compromise.

Moreover, I'd be willing to bet the majority of the current student body would be mortified (and understandably so).
we simply didnt have an Illini tribe (like the Seminoles) that we could get friendly with and give some money to, to make all the problems go away
thats really it in a nutshell. if you are going to replicate native american customs and costumes, you need them to sign off first.

I was at the game in 1981 or 1982 when Chief Frank Fools Crow from South Dakota gave/dedicated our then new Chief outfit, and he was cool with it.
Doesnt matter though. Its over now and is NEVER coming back

Scott was a student in my freshman English class at Glenbard North HS in Carol Stream my first year of teaching. In a classroom where I had a bulletin board in the front of the room with an Illinois pennant and a big Illinois Football schedule poster, I can remember coming back from my first Homecoming game telling my kids how awesome Chief Illiniwek was. It was really fun to watch Scott dance in person at both football and basketball games. He was a great student, but a really great Chief! He later autographed a picture of himself in regalia for me. Ahhhh, memories.
