Is Carney not a draft prospect? I'm a little surprised he's not going the draft route. I mean he's played 4 seasons and just put together his most impressive and complete year. Guessing he'd really only be a 7th rounder or UDFA, so might as well give it another shot in college to up your stock. Either way, tough loss but not surprising. Gonna be an uphill climb on defense, that's for sure.

He is not a draft prospect. Perry is our best and possibly only legit draft prospect on the D
Randolph and Newton are ready for the next step IMO. Coleman's impact might depend more on the type of defense

Some of these guys are probably willing to wait to see who our defensive coaches will be before making a decision. Others might not care. It's the people in the middle that start to be of concern the longer we go without any staff announcements. Different people have different thresholds for dealing with uncertainty.

Twitter has had unsubstantiated rumors of the exact opposite, but who knows.
A football team is a lot of people, multiple currents of opinion are always swirling around even the most cohesive locker room.
It's not exactly clear what we could have done to avoid this, it's just Thunderdome out there right now and we will see where we are when the dust settles.

This is pretty much unavoidable. He's been here 4 years. In a normal year, he'd be gone. Under normal transfer restrictions, he'd be a grad transfer. These guys get a chance to try out a new situation and they're going for it. Can't blame him.
My thoughts also. Time for the young guys to shine. If we end up going with the 3- 4, DL depth won't be such an issue. We need LB's. Wish Owen the best wherever he lands.
So without much of a staff yet, how far are we behind in the transfer market? I saw Penn St has already signed 4, thigh no idea how good they are.
Coleman’s primed to be a stand up rush linebacker. Has the potential to be a Leonard Floyd clone
I hope the new staff doesn't just hand out scholarships to get a warm body. I'd rather play short handed next season and take our lumps in order to have a full complement of rides to give during the next couple of years. Build the new foundation around those new guys.

Losing Carney stings. Was finally rounding into form.
I could see us trying to get warm bodies at positions like ILB and WR.
IMO, BB has seen this before with the ILLINI. I just don't think he will. It does him and the team no good.
Need to fill the roster whether transfers or Hs or JC. Overage year. They should take another 10/11 for 2021 and see what works out. There will likely be transfers/moving in after first year, guys that don’t fit. So, guessing it should not affect future recruiting class much. Probably will aim for a full 25 man class for 2022.

I'm hoping BB can replace him with players who don't take 4 years to "round into form." No offense to OC, but I think more was expected from him when first recruited out of FL. He was a pretty highly regarded prospect coming out of HS.
Yeah, me too. Especially Newton. I think he's gonna be a great player for us by the time he's finished here.
