Trouble in Madison?

In most cases it seems you can separate obnoxiousness on the court in the heat of competition from a player's off the court demeanor.

Bohannon is a notable exception.

I remeber seeing people comparing the two after Bohannon got knocked out but apparently Davison is a pretty standup guy off the court. Big into church and community service. Still don't like the guy on the court though.

Just listened to the 37 min clip. WHOA. I'm not sure Gard will survive this. If he does, it could set Wisconsin back for years. The optics of this now is bad enough.

Nice fire for McIntosh, their new AD, to put out!! Wouldn't that be a beautiful thing to see Wiscy slide back to the pre-Barry programs we knew and loved.

Sorry if I have overlooked it in a previous thread here, but where is the clip of this located? I'm not finding it.

He does not have a good reputation with the schools he played against in high school. Living here in Minnesota now and have not heard good things.

BTW, how do you edit your location? I'm no longer in the NW burbs but am stuck up here in gopherland.

Wow, that's a really interesting peak into a program having a grenade go off. Tons of damage there, but man does it make me appreciate Underwood. Hard to fake caring about your players. Glad he advocates so strongly for his guys, and I really don't care if he sometimes overuses the word elite.

I'm a little surprised at how Wiscy is handling this --seems like PR 101 is to get the bad news out in the open, and then apply the spin. Seems like they're pointing fingers over the leak, trying to generate sympathy over the lack of confidentiality. Little late for that IMO. And Gard's statement is in direct conflict with what many players expressed. That will be damning in the eyes of many.

Alvarez releasing a statement with his "full support" to everyone.

I wonder how the Badger faithful are digesting this. Gard's only missed the tourney once. This seems to have caused a lot of turnover, and should have real consequences on the recruiting trail.

Just finished listening too. I almost feel like I personally had no business hearing all of that. Talk about a raw, brutal and honest discussion delivered from the players. And I agree.....I don't know how Gard survives this, let alone the program itself if he remains.

"We played Illinois. They had 20 turnovers and I think they beat us by 15. Because if you have turnovers, but you do everything else really well, it comes together" 12:10min mark

He made his point really well there. Not sure if it was intentional, but IMO it speaks volumes to the contrast in coaching styles. As a fan, how many times did the camera pan to the bench and we saw guys excited and engaged, rooting their hearts out for the players in the game? What a joy to watch.

The recording and releasing of the meeting is a reflection of Gard and the culture he created. People in the meeting clearly didn’t trust him.
Great post......Clearly the culture that Gard has established was the main reason for the meeting between the 7 seniors and coaches...
Releasing the taped conversations shows that it's more than a bump in the road and this will reasonate for as long as Gard is there...Remember it's 7 seniors who have been there 4-5-6 years playing for him and for anyone to say " I doubt i'll ever come back " or " you made me feel like you don't have my back "
is damning to a BB program at it's deepest core....
Doubt Gard can survive , no matter what Barry Alverez says publicly....

What’s ironic is that without knowing any of this, when I first heard about players getting the extra Covid year of eligibility, my first thought was: How will Wisconsin accommodate if all 7 of their seniors want to return ? Obviously not an issue...

Obviously not an issue...

heh, says a lot on it's own.

I believe Gard just got a contract extension in April, so they may stand by him until it shows up in the W/L column. Either way he's going to be under a microscope. When leadership doesn't have your back at this level, it's really hard to assert control without further alienation. That can work to a degree, like when guys are showing up for a paycheck, but I don't see it working at a high major college basketball program.

BTW, I started reading this Wiscy Badger thread. I found it interesting how many old school posters there talked down the players, called them soft, chickens, etc. Here's a sample:

"Yup ... if only you loved me more maybe I'd occasionally BOX OUT AND GRAB A F##KING REBOUND."

"A relationship? What is this a marriage? ....If you want something deeper I suggest you get a dog or a girlfriend."

and of course there are much worse comments deriding the players. What I found them incredibly ignorant about how big time college athletics work. These same posters expect top talent to choose them over all other schools? As if this derision isn't without consequences? How stupid can you be? And as far as being a marriage, YES, but with WAY more time together, and WAY more work on a daily basis. SMH. It's like they think these kids don't have options or control over their own destiny.

There were posts pushing back as well, with posters realizing how bad it had to get for an entire senior class to unite against their coach. One of the better comments I saw responding to an old-school comment, "It doesn't matter what you think, it matters what 15-18 year olds think.

Coaches lose teams, and when they do it's hard to get them back. Be interesting to see how this unfolds, and whether they can recruit well. The turnover should give Gard a chance, but this story is going to haunt them.

That’s crazy. A solid relationship is the most important piece of any coach/player dynamic. Even at the public high school level where you can’t control what players you get, it’s the most important piece. When kids have options like where they go for D1, how anyone could think it’s not important is crazy.

I gotta imagine this this'll give recruits and their families prause about committing to play for Gard. Even if he rides this out short term, I'd be surprised if there weren't consequences in the medium to long term for him and the program.

Yeah I don't really see how he survives this long term. Most likely recruiting is harder and thus winning is harder. I guess whoever leaked this is going to get what they want in the end

If this has been an ongoing issue, why did the seniors wait till they were done before bringing this to light? Why not address this when they were sophomores or juniors?
