From what I've read, they did address this last year. And when they told Gard how they felt, he cried and said he'd do better. The team came together and won their last 8 games. Apparently he hasn't really changed and the players called him out on it.

Winning will make someone look the other way. It's easy to fall into, "This sucks, but it's working and worth it." People do it for bad jobs with good salaries all the time. But when the winning stops (or the salary is no longer worth the hassle), all bets are off.

Players play in the system and culture, the coach creates it. Kids coming in at 18 and 19 don't know how to necessarily advocate for themselves (and may not think they need to if they're winning). It may have taken them that much time to develop the skills to speak up. That doesn't happen over night.

TL;DR: I doubt there's anything nefarious in the timing of this. This happened before the NCAA tourney and the players did it as a way to try to spark positive change from what they've told the media.

I guess this makes Kobe King's reason for leaving more plausible.....

It was stated in one of the articles that it surfaced the previous year as well when Kobe King left. Gard apparently broke down and cried and said he’d do better. From what I read it was better for the rest of the year (when they went on their big run) and then it reverted back when they returned for this year.

Was reading that Wiscy knew about this when they extended coaching contracts in April. Combine that with Alvarez's public statement, and it would seem that no one really cares what those players said about Gard.
