TV Shows

It really is the golden age of television shows.

Of those you listed, I've seen and very much enjoyed Luther and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (the last episode on psychics was incredible). On my list are Russian Doll, Sex Education, Atypical (not a big fan of Michael Rappaport, but I can make due), Happy Valley, Ozark (all seasons), and True Detective (seasons 2 & 3; I doubt season 2 was as bad as the critics panned it to be, and I very much enjoy Mahershala Ali for season 3).

I'm primarily a Netflix viewer (the only other streaming service I have is Amazon), and the good thing about having Netflix programming is that there's less pressure to catch up on those shows because they will likely be there forever. Alas, here are some of the others on my current list "to watch later":
  • Murder Mountain (true crime docuseries about marijuana)
  • The Sinner (small town murder mystery with Jessica Biel and Bill Pullman)
  • You (aspiring writer turned stalker).
Perhaps I need some lighter shows to mix in there. :)

"You" is actually pretty light for a stalker/murder show. I rather liked it. I found myself rooting for the stalker. Sort of like Dexter. And about as believable, but if that doesn't bother you it's pretty fun.

The latest episode of Barry (s2e5) was laugh out loud bonkers. Really, really enjoying that show.

Just finished season 5 of Bosch. Outstanding, as usual. Highly, highly recommend it.

Saw a little tease of the Deadwood movie on an HBO promo. Can't believe it got done. Little know fact: Titus Weliver (Bosch) was in Deadwood.

Loving Chernobyl (HBO/Sky). 4 episodes in on Catch-22 (Hulu). Really good show. Halfway through Dead To Me (Netflix). Thought it was going to be predictable. It's not.

I just finished up Easy on Netflix. Love Joe Swanberg's work. The ensemble cast was wonderful (though I don't understand the appeal of Dave Franco).

I've heard some of my coworkers raving about Chernobyl. May have to give it a go.

Watched the first episode of Warrior (Cinemax). Love it, which isn't surprising, considering that the showrunner is Jonathon Tropper, the guy behind Banshee.

Started s3 of Sneaky Pete. What a cast. I could watch Marin Ireland ALL DAY LONG!

Other than what felt like it was condensed into 6 episodes, I didn't feel the final season of "Game of Thrones" deserved the distaste it received.*

*I realize I'm a few months behind, but bear with me.

I finally caught up with Stranger Things. Well, I finished the first two seasons. Interesting.

Season 3 came out last Thursday. I finished it on Friday. 8 episodes goes really fast. I'm ready for Season 4 (likely the last).

I started Season three after I finished episode 8 of season 2 and thought, what a crappy ending to season 2. Then I found out there were 9 episodes.

Definitely easy to rip through them.

Jett (Cinemax): VG, although I'm a sucker for crime stories. Giancarlo Esposito shines, as usual. Strong cast, strong scripts.
City on a Hill (Showtime): good, but not as good as Jett. Kevin Bacon has scumbag down
Wu Assassin (Netflix): 2 episodes in, VG thus far
Startup (Crackle): 2 season in. VG show, that no one's ever heard of

Yeah, Mindhunter is on my list.

This looks incredible. Thank you for the recommendation.

Peaky flippin' Blinders is back!!! (in the UK, anyway)

In the interim, loving Succession (HBO) and Mindhunter (Netflix). Lodge 49 (AMC) is a good, offbeat show. Very happy it got a second season. Pennyworth (Epix), Diagnosis (Netflix) and Brassic (Sky1) look interesting.

Just finished binging Mindhunter (Netflix). Great, great stuff. Hope s3 is ready in a year (not 2).

I finished it as well and think it might be my favorite Netflix original series (it's the true crime junkie in me). The final scene of the last episode served two purposes for me, 1) Brought to reality (as opposed to merely interview conversations or theory) the psychosexual nature of the crimes these men are/were committing, and 2) Has me eagerly awaiting season 3. David Fincher has said he hopes to do 5 total seasons.

Ok, just saw this thread and thought I'd chime in. Lots of great shows out there --something for everyone. Fun to add my thoughts and be an armchair critic....

Russian Doll was a fun and unusual. Also recommend
Maniac was an awesomely weird, edgy, dark comedy that pays homage to the 80s. One of my recent favorites.
Chernobyl was incredible. Best drama I've seen in ages. Immeasurable tragedy told in a humanizing way. Hard to watch, but I'd recommend it.
Dark Crystal: Age of Renaissance. Wow, I would never have thought they would do such a good job with this story. Visuals are amazing, and a nice tribute to Jim Henson's original. If you like these kinds of young/adult stories, give it a look.
Last Week Tonight - If liberal political humor is your thing. He's a bit heavy-handed at times if you have more diverse political views.
Carnival Row - Partially through, jury still out. Visually interesting world and characters, but not quite sold on it yet.
Stranger Things Season 3 - More of the same, and tries to be cutesy more than previous seasons. I'm in the minority, but it's run its course and then some, IMHO.
Peaky Blinders - Have enjoyed its historical fiction quite a bit. (Through season 2).

Mindhunter is on my list.

As a preface, this show contains sexual violence, but I am three episodes into the limited series Unbelievable on Netflix right now, and it is simply harrowing. If you can make it through the intentionally repetitive traumatic scenes in the first episode, you'll be drawn in. Working with survivors of sexual assault, I'm blown away by the empathy of the show's two detectives.

Additionally, I heard on NPR's Pop Culture Happy Hour podcast that an accurate portrayal of a good therapist is on the horizon. As a psychologist, I'm selfishly excited to see that.

Technically it's not a TV Show, but El Camino (Breaking Bad movie) is out on Netflix this Friday. I can't wait to return to one of the best shows ever for another couple of hours.

Season 3 of Get Shorty started this weekend. Very funny show. Give it a spin, you won't be sorry.
