Ty Rodgers to take redshirt year

First, this is bad news. Spinning this to say a starter on last year’s Elite 8 team, our best defender, our hardest worker and someone who was reported to have made substantial improvement is leaving is a large negative.

Second, obviously the NIL money has a clause saying the player has to play? No way he gets $300,000 or whatever to redshirt and transfer.

I am getting the same vibe as when BU switched from his high-pressure, gambling defense to a solid, less turnover-centric defense... and it worked.
Hopefully, BU's focus on long athletic scorers who can play "good enough" defense will bear similar fruit! I'll miss Ty just like I miss Buck, but perhaps we can no longer afford the luxury of having great defenders who are non-factors on offense.

Oh give me a break with this. Ty didn't improve him game during the offseason. Relying on a player that doesn't get better is a recipe for disaster. This is not a poor look on the program. It's a poor look on the player. Brad's job is to win not be babysitter.

This sucks because we all loved Ty's energy, but a lot of the guys that have transferred are quite limited in what they can do. Like Ty, Frazier's guys were great athletes but not good shooters. BU wants versatility at every position and not to be limited by a player's inability to shoot jumpers.

I'm assuming, throughout practice, it's been pretty clear that Rodgers is behind some of the new guys and isn't going to get the amount of minutes he wants. Facts are, Rodgers can't shoot. Not that he's a weak shooter, or even a bad shooter, he can't get the ball through the hoop from further than 6 ft.

He didn't wait until today, it was only announced today. Staff clearly knew about it for a while if you read between the lines from several posts over the past month that now make sense. I would bet staff and him already agreed on this week's ago but kept it quiet so NIL would still work out and it wouldn't disrupt the team with what would have been weeks and weeks of media questions and national talking heads putting a spotlight on a young inexperienced team.

For example, imagine it being reported Ty was redshirting 3 weeks before the Ole Miss scrimmage and then the fanbase sees what we saw. The reaction would be sky is falling

Fans root for their (beloved) institution and Players play primarily for themselves. So it shall be. This is the existential College sports divide that will never be bridged because the central motivations of each side will quite often be different.

This is just another effect of The Portal. ‘The Institution’ now must always be on the prowl for the best group of guys they can put together... full well knowing that the roster must be rebuilt every single new season.

Players will always have a short window to show their stuff in their fleeting college years. They always have to do what they feel is best in that short amount of time to maximize their value for what comes next for them. And then it is they who have to live with consequences of their decision. Sometimes leaving is the best thing they could have chosen. Other times it doesn't work out so well.

Nothing wrong with any of this. Everyone is upfront about what the arrangement is now and both sides share the idea of always doing what is best in their own interest.

Just run a clean and successful roundball program... make it a place guys would want to come to and thrive... and this makes everyone happy – Institution, Player, and Fans.

ILL doesn’t make the elite 8 without Ty last year. I understand the more talent and more upside with this years team, but you can’t get that much more upside than last years team. Like Brad said we were a final four team that just happened to run into UConn in the elite 8. It’s hard to believe Ty wouldn’t get 20-25 mins of this years team solely because of defense, rebounding, toughness, and winning.

I know at the end of the day it was probably Ty’s decision, and maybe he wants to work on his shooting and come back and be a star, but I just don’t see it in todays world. Sad to see, just sad to see.

I just got done playing college tennis 20 years ago. Ty reminds me of me too.

It’s a pretty big loophole. It basically makes it a certainty every (non professional) athlete transfers maximum number of times so they can game the system and get paid maximum number of years including some for not playing at all. So every (non professional) basketball player will transfer the day before the season starts once and most likely in final year to maximize pay.

It's still 5 to play 4 I think. I don't think this really maximizes pay the way some believe. Right now he has to sell someone that his shot is improved without game stats to back it up. That team has to bring him in knowing that if he backs up an improved shot with actual performance, he may dash off again. So his next NIL contract may not be so hot.

He was only a starter because they had three All Conference caliber scores on the floor with him, one being an All American. He's an offensive liability and this is a completely different roster. I love Ty's effort. He's a great glue guy, but that's all he was going to be. He doesn't have a high D1 caliber offensive game.

Substantial improvement from what? He didn't shoot a perimeter jumper all year, he never bothered looking at the rim from behind 8 feet and when he did shoot it, it was a soft floater to just get it on the rim. How do you gage improvement?

Pretty sure that you're wrong regarding the money. He's getting paid, just as Harris did last year. The horses have left the barn with regards to NIL. Just as well embrace it.

Don't know what games you were watching but, with maybe outside of a couple of halves, Rodgers was never the best player on the floor last season, largely because of his being a serious liability on offense. He couldn't make a shot other than layup and dunk and drove me mad at how many layups he missed.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't his PT decline late in the season and during the tournaments because it was 4-on-5 on offense when he was in there?
Seems like nice kid and hard worker, but it was hard to see a comparable role (minutes) for him on this year's deeper and more talented team, though his defense will be missed. As Underwood added players for this year, it seemed as if Rodgers was not going to be happy with a reduced role.

Oh come on. What coach wouldn’t want multiple guys that could get you about 10-12 offensive boards on a given night?

Maybe, we’ve got more dudes besides Morez who can do just that…but Ty had a proven track record of it…pretty sure that’s all TGGhost is saying.
